Someone a while back posted a list of all the play-off and cup heartaches and threw in relegations as well. It went back a fair way I think - anyone care to do an updated one? :(

I want convincing that it IS all to do with a curse or something.

I can't wait to see a fully compiled list of this! It's what makes United so special

ciomplete list since relegation from top division in 75

every fucking season

since then weve had 5 seasons back in the top
2 we got relegated again and another 2 we just avoided it , only season we finished 11th was of note

the shining lights
3 seasons in 40 years

finishing 11th was ok
promotions under porterfield frpm div 4 basset and warnock
the rest , disappointing

1961 lost cup semi final
1968 relegated from Division 1 by losing last game
1976 relegated from Division 1 on Easter Saturday
1979 relegated from Division 2 for 1st time
1981 relegated from Division 3 with positive goal difference after missing last minute penalty and after spending only last 5 minutes of season in bottom 4
1988 relegated from Division 2 in playoffs
1993 lose FA Cup semi final
1994 relegated from Premier League with last minute goal when 3 other results go against us
1997 lose Division 1 playoff final to last minute goal
1998 lose FA Cup semi final; lose Division 1 playoff semi final
2003 lose FA Cup semi final; lose league cup semi final; lose Division 1 playoff final
2007 relegated from Premier League with defeat in last home game with another result going against us and league ignoring Tevez fiasco
2009 miss promotion on last day of season; lose Division 1 playoff final
2011 relegated to league one
2012 miss promotion on last day of season, largely due to jailing of star player, with record points for non promoted club. Lose League 1 playoff final after 0-0 draw and 22 penalty shootout in which our keeper missed decisive kick and opponents failed to score any of first 3 pens. Set record of 4th playoff final defeat and 1st club not to go up despite not conceding a goal in playoffs
2013 lose league 1 playoff semi final
2014 lose FA Cup semi final
2015 lose league cup semi final, our 7th straight semi final defeat which I think is an English record; lose league 1 playoff semi final despite scoring 5 times in away leg; 8th playoff campaign without victory will become worst ever record if Preston win their final

Meanwhile at the Piggery
In 20 seasons only 4 times in the upper half of their respective league.

What was that cry for stability?

In 2009 we missed out on promotion in the 1st game of the season(08/09) through a last minute goal from Kevin Phillips.
That sticks with me as much as the Mark Bloody Stein.

Yes: horribly negative performance that day against a team there for the taking.

Yes! Absolutely! I was castigated elsewhere for slagging that performance off and the time, so I'm glad hindsight has proved me correct.

As for talk of curses etc, last night is no example of undue bad luck. We've never really shown we were good enough for promotion all season and we were beaten over two legs by a team that had finished deservedly higher in the league.

I am laughing my arse off at that. Why do I support Sheffield United, again?

:)

If you want a curse, by the way, McCabe said to me after the promotion celebration in 2006 that "you'll never see that again". I know he said this to other people too around that time.

McCabe said this because he thought we were in the PL to stay.

9 years on, he was right. We have not seen another promotion celebration.

I sometimes wonder if he regrets saying this.

And then go on a winning run whose only purpose is it avoids us getting the record low points total ever. My first season ticket

With some very suspicious behaviour from players in those other games? Have I got the right season? Am I a conspiracy nut?

I believe that when Segers, Fashanu and Grobbelaar were tried for match fixing, Wimbledon's 2-3 defeat at Everton on that last day was cited as one of the fixed games. There were, of course, found not guilty, which means that a jury were not certain fixing was going on.

I am sceptical about the conspiracy theory about that Everton game. If bets were made on Everton winning and Fashanu and Segers were throwing the game, it would seem unlikely they would allow Wimbledon to take a 2-0 lead.

I don't think that is correct. They were not charged with rigging that game.

I thought at the time was that this was because the implications of them being found guilty were too great. The other games were of no consequence I think.

It amazes me how we continue to find new ways to fail. I thought we'd run out of methods after the Huddersfield final in 2012 where they missed their first three and we were one kick away from promotion and we still couldn't do it.

Last night broke new ground, highest scoring play off game ever and if anybody had told me before kick off that we'd score five, I would have assumed we'd scrape through. I wouldn't have expected a clean sheet, but I didn't expect us to be three down and four behind by 8 o'clock either :-)

Didn't
  1. Segers make a very half-hearted attempt to save a penalty?
  2. Fashanu give away a penalty (the same one?) for handball by basically throwing his arm at the ball in an entirely non-threatening attack?
I've seen 1 but I can only remember 2 from watching it on MotD at the time.

2. Was at a different game - in 1991.

As Revolution says above, it seems the 1994 game was not in question, whereas the 1991 game was.

In 94, the "half hearted" attempt was a crap dive Segers made to stop a Graham Stuart shot. I don't think that's enough, on it's own, to suggest match fixing. More likely to be crap goalkeeping and no one would have suggested otherwise had Segers not been a suspect in other cases.

OK. Thanks. Just watched it and it's crap - but not glaring.

Do you know the details of the Fashanu handball?

We were losing 1-0 at Wimbledon in 1991 when Fashanu gave away a penalty with handball from a long throw for no reason at all. It looked deliberate. Deano scored the penalty.

Fashanu did the same thing later on in the game but the referee did not give anything.

At the time I was annoyed as had we won that would have extended our winning streak to 8 games.

I like the conspiracy theories looking at the refereeing performance in the 1st leg on Thursday you could be forgiven for believing there was a conspiracy to keep us in league one where we would be a lifeline to some of the smaller outfits. You know like a guaranteed 3rd round cup payday every season where they play in front of a crowd six times larger than they ever get for a home game that is until we pay them the return visit.

Except away teams do not get anything from gates at the Lane.
