Wilder's post match interview last night.

"I just think where are the young up and coming referees that should be refereeing in the Championship instead of the ones that just survive.

"They keep surviving and no doubt we'll have another survivor on Saturday, where's the quality?"

Replace the word referee with manager and Wilder just described himself and Sheffield United under his "leadership."

He’s a spent force.

Lots of managers have a shelf life, they get some decent jobs and then over time you see them managing further and further down the football league ladder, Ian Holloway springs to mind.

Wilder left us and did rubbish at both Boro and Watford so naturally we bring him back because “he’s a blade”, we sack him again and then bring him back again.

The club needs a clean break from him now, he isn’t going to turn this around and if we hang into him we are in for a very long and very boring season.
agree with every word of that im afraid were going nowhere with wilder in charge and it does pain me to say that as a massive wilder fan first time round he looks tired is devoid of ideas and his tactics are slow boring football no wonder theres no atmosphere at the lane anymore

Yeah, the atmosphere is Wilder's fault, nowt to do with us fans...

I thought that when he said it 😬

Does the team pay the fans to listen to them or do the fans pay to watch the team?

We are boring to watch. The team should lift the fans then they'll get more back from them.

This attitude of it's the fans job to pay £30+ to entertain a professional footballer who earns thousand of pounds a week is horse shit. It's the same bizarre attitude of accepting poor performances just because we won. We played poorly all season in the 92 point season and look where it's got us now playing the same way.

I hate how accepting mediocrity and under performance is the norm for this football club and a large portion of it's fans, as well as a fear of change and belief that only people linked to the club can drive it forwards. How are we ever going to progress if all we do is bring in people who "get the club" and will continue to do what we've always done, which has resulted in further mediocrity and failure?

I don't watch games for the result. I watch them to see a good game of football and they've been rare over the last five seasons. If I was bothered only by the result then I'd just check the score at the final whistle. I can take losing if we play well far more than playing shite for 90 minutes and scraping a win. I know which one delivered for what I was paying for.

it's funny how Blades fans will defend crap games of football because we won, and yet if they were watching another Championship match on TV that didn't involve Sheffield United, that was boring and crap with little quality and few chances on goal, then they'd happily pipe up and criticise and most likely turn it off. But when it comes to Sheffield United because theh they won't be a "true Blade" and might lose their imaginary status if being "Bladier than thou."

Football is an entertainment business and all we get as paying customers is the fruit of endless bad business decisions and very little entertainment. The team entertains the fans and not vice versa. If they want the crowd buzzing then give us something to get excited about. Our fans don't get excited as they come to the ground expecting to see dull, lifeless, boring predictable football and Wilder always delivers on this.

Football is a professional sport where two teams do everything they can to win, if you want to watch entertainment stick the tele on or watch the WWE.

I don't chant to entertain footballers, I chant because it's what I enjoy doing at the football, it's my job as a fan. Half our songs reference us being shit, but we come back to support the team regardless.

The atmosphere has always and will always be on both the squad and the fans.

If the fans think the players and staff are giving absolutely everything for the shirt and putting in some high intensity and entertaining performances then the crowd will respond.

When the team needs the fans to dig deep and give them the extra 5/10% to push something over the line then that’s on the fans.

The issue we’ve got is that we’re stuck in a cycle of playing bland, boring and ineffective football so the fans sit there in a beer induced stupor and can’t really be arsed to move.

I’d say the support last night was excellent and responded to the lads trying to dig themselves out of a hole.

When we sit at home passing sideways and backwards in our own half the onus has to be on the players to up the intensity to get the crowds buy-in first. It takes a meaty tackle or one decent shot sometimes to ignite the atmosphere.

That's your choice. If you want to pay to watch utter garbage and cheer on utter garbage then fair play to you. I expect more for my money.

If I went to the cinema and watched a rubbish movie I wouldn't pay to watch it again hoping that somehow it might be different the second time round.

We all have our reasons for going to watch a game of football but accepting mediocrity and defending a poor performance because we won seems to be set in stone in the DNA of some of our fans.

Genuine question. If you weren't a Sheffield United supporter and you saw us playing on TV this season, would you pay money to watch us play?

Wilder saying the referee last night is just a survivor, and that the referee on Saturday will be just a survivor. Well he's obviously looking in the mirror, because he empitomises being a survivor

It's all about opinions and I accept yours.

I don't see being a football fan as a hobby, it's part of my identity. I was forced to go to church as a kid, to gather with people in an incredibly boring place to get together as a community, sing songs and share in a collective sense of purpose. Now I go to the football and much prefer it.

I don't even understand what you mean when you talk about accepting mediocrity. I don't decide who the manager is or our wage bill. I don't defend poor performances, I try to give my honest take on every game. Anyone watching our game last night would have been entertained, it was definitely more entertaining than the average Championship game, it was high energy, end to end at times, five goals and a red card.

If you demand better as a customer, take your money elsewhere if it will make you happy. Nobody is forcing you to come.

"Win lose or draw, we'll still come back for more".... (unless we pass it sideways too often, the I'm off to the cinema).

Thanks for a decent reply as my intention wasn't to turn this into a row.

Hope the movie isn't crap 🤣

I’m not laughing at your post btw - it’s a good one - i really enjoyed the last sentence 👍

I think the ref not caving into Pompey pressure and sending Hamza off but instead giving the red card against Bamford and giving us a penalty would have been a more successful get out of jail card for Chris as I think we would have won last night
Whatever people think about Chris that ref is an absolute disgrace……
Btw I think Chris is doing the best he can under shit circumstances…..
The only thing I would say, and we saw that with Neil in my opinion, is that I wonder whether refs are broadly putting on glasses every game that look for reasons to punish us due to Chris’s comments in interviews….
Forgot about the Bamford challenge.. red all day that Oliver needs to see that one played back see how he explains that challenge

Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche...
And this is part of the problem, we are simply not fishing in that pool any longer. The reality is we sack wilder and replace with someone who might be better or might be worse. What then? Sack them and continue the decline. And no I'm not defending the rubbish we are watching most of the time nor Wilder for that matter. I don't have the confidence to appoint anyone better and I think Wilder’s time is up but I am deeply worried about what would come next.

Ooh nice, I see what you've done there.

Think you were on another channel
First 15 minutes both sides looked non league
They then pinned us back we then had a good 10/15 minutes spell and last quarter looked fragile and they camped in our half pre red card and beyond
No I was watching the right channel.
It it was very much direct from both sides though. We started to settle down though and began to control possession. Portsmouth kept trying to catch us on the break and usually kicked the ball into touch.

I remember seeing the stats too at around 35mins in and 46% of play was in the Portsmouth half too. At that stage Cannon didn't make the most of his through ball and Cannon and Bamford didn't get on the end of that cross. It was not utter dominance but we were the better side at that point.

They got a break and Hamza gave away his first yellow at 35mins. After this Portsmouth with Kavuma-McQueen seemed to get a new impetus but nothing looking too dangerous.
We then clear poorly and they score from a great strike. Albeit no one was near him, which is frustrating.

Much as I think more & more that Wilder is a ‘spent force’….. we are all dreaming if we think we are going to get a Dyche, Cooper to replace him. No chance - that opportunity was wasted at the start of last season. We have no money - Bettis has said it’s still frees & loans in January - so any new Manager will have to accept that he’s got to work with what he’s got plus our youngsters this season…. Hence why I’d say if Wilder goes they’ll bring back Paul Heckingbottom! Why…. He’s cheap(ie available), he’s an easy appointment for the board / Bettis & he’s good at integrating the young players into the squad/team.

So whilst I’d not agree - I’m guessing that Wilder will be gone ones way or another by Xmas and Hecky will be in place to replace him (whether we like it or not he’s one of the few managers out there who have worked with this type of ownership shitshow before & may be happy to do so again)
Coopers handled that before

It was actually 46% in the Portsmouth 3rd as they split the pitch into 3 for that stat.

Look I'm in the "Wilder has run his course" camp and IIBH at the start of game I actually wondered if we'd gone back in time to the Bassett era the "football" being attempted was that pre historic.

To add balance though after that initial period I thought we started to look at lot better, not great but better, and were easily the better team as shown by the stat above. Then they score a worldy swiftly followed by Cuntford stepping up to make it all about himself yet again and the game was effectively over at that point.

There is no way on earth this squad has the fitness levels to play 10 v 11 for that amount of a game left. We could probably play another 10 games in the same situation and I reckon we may scrape a lucky draw in 1 of the 10.

That's on Wilder as he's built the squad this way but that's been done to death already so no point going over old ground.

Whilst I agree that CW is a spent force, no one comes up with who we should appoint if we sack him?
Christ. This whole "name someone else" meme is pathetic, trying to deflect from the idea that Wilder is not the man from the job to looking for reasons why a specific alternative is just as shit, and then extending that into nobody else can do a better job

Should post this on the Blades FB groups. Get called all the names under the sun by his mates and sycophants.

It's deffo cultish on those groups. Even modest constructive criticism is jumped on.

There are some of us who would like to know that should Wilder be removed from his job, who would be willing to take over and also who could also be able to arrest the slide.

It’s not culltism, it’s not pathetic, it’s just pragmatic.

I’d like to draw a comparison. In 10/11 we was in a very similar siituation with a board who didn’t have the money to put in, who was selling our better players, and a manager whose style of football had become dull and tedious to watch, and it was clear was going stale in his time at the Lane.

We pulled the plug after 2 games and burned through another 3 managers, getting relegated with games to spare, and with the knock on of 6 years in League One. Where perhaps the original manager, as unpopular as he was, and as poor his style of football was would have more than likely ground us enough points out to clamber to safety.

This season is going to be littered with poor results and poor performances, we’ve been shorn of our best 3 players and it is telling. Realistically the aim has to be safety and then reassess when we reach that postition of safety.

I’d be supportive if a change, and even more so a overhaul of the structure of the club when it comes to the football side too whilst we are at it

Ref was poor and to a degree it is a fair point.

But this is the same club that complained about being a testing ground for young inexperienced referees in recent times!

Honestly i figure you have two options here:

1. You don’t have faith in Chris so you make a change soon and appoint someone like Dave Challinor. He gets a fair chunk of the season and also a transfer window to make some headway into what will be a big summer.

2. You trust Chris to keep us afloat knowing that a) we have the BLUT roof to fund and selling players might be an avenue for that b) we have the Academy at Dore to fund and selling players might be an avenue for that c) there will be multiple players out of contract and you might not want i) more instability of a manager change adding to that ii) an inexperienced operator to oversee it.

So for me I would not be surprised to see either Chris gone by Christmas or Chris still here next Christmas. Changing in the summer will simply mean the new guy is already behind schedule. If we continue this recruitment policy we need to be all over who is out of contract earlier than January so we can line up cheap deals or even get pre-contract agreements lined up.

I think Dave Challinor is already nailed on to take the Pigs job.

I think the real risk is that there is no guarantee that making a change now would improve things for the better

I think under CW we won’t go down this season, we will pick up enough points at home and pick up a few away and that will be sufficient to mean we stay in the Championship.

I also feel strongly that Uniteds best bet would be letting him keep up this season and have the honest conversation with him that we are looking to make a change at the end of the season and keeping him onside until then and trying to ensure an orderly transition of power to the new manager
