Squad reshape this summer

Does anybody understand what Wilder meant by "the overall look at what's happened at the club the last 3 or 4 days" in his presser yesterday?

The only reason Cannon plays instead of him is the price tag. Literally zero other reason for it, he offers nothing more than Oné and has less upside. We just need to cut our losses and sell Cannon and stop hindering the team.
Who's going to buy him though? The only way to attract a buyer (other than to accept a huge loss), is to play him in hus best position, start him regularly and coach him into being a better player. If that was to happen then we'd definitely attract interest in him. Other that he'll just wind up another expensive Wilder flop who leaves on a free when his contract runs out because no one wants to buy him. Another argument for why Wilder can't be trusted with money.

Wilder won't do that as he rarely plays with two up top, so Cannon is already heading towards winding down his contract with us and Utd suffering £10mil down the drain. It's like Wilder or the scouts didn't watch him before they signed him. Stoke fans were saying it. Looks good in a front two, ineffective up top alone.

I do feel for Cannon as he often gets brought on late when Wilder has shut up shop and decided to defend the lead if we're winning, so he's stranded up top alone starved of service with the team refrained from getting forward, or when we're losing have lost control of the game, where again he's starved of service due to our midfield inability to keep hold of the ball or use it meaningfully. I'm not saying he doesn't have his faults but he's often a victim of circumstance when he comes on.

I defend Wilder until I am blue in the face, but he 100% plays players like Cannon and Brewster because of the price tag and to prove they aren't flops. Im not that high on One, he looked good last pre season but looks clumsy and awkward in this one... but, he definitely offers more than Cannon.

I think he means the whole togetherness and experience they've had in this camp. He's frustrated with the ins and outs so I think he was concentrating on the positives from the bonding over there.

Ah,
Yeah makes sense. Was hoping he was alluding to some dealings going on in the background.

Is it just me, or do we feel like we still have quite a lot to do?!

We're idling towards nothing, with no real sense of urgency.

We have very little depth, across the park.
We need a first choice CB
A first choice CM, especially if anyone leaves.
We are still playing Gus LW and then if he leaves, we have no replacement.
We have an inexperienced kid at RW and no further depth. Huge drop off from Brooks.
We have no pace or athleticism, or creativity. A problem worsened notably if Gus goes.

...and we seemingly have next to naff all resources upon which to do it.

We seem preoccupied with fending off bids for who we do have and we are showing no gumption or ambition to try and improve the squad in any way.
I think whether we have a lot left to do will largely depend on the decisions we make in the next week.

If Phillips is the chosen midfield open, is all agreed and he’s now fit and all we need to do is trigger then numbers wise that’s the midfield done. We then just have to wait and see if we want to let Peck go on our terms and who we replace him with or whether we go with just two for each spot and no insurance of a 5th option.

Things are clearly finely poised on the defensive front. The encouraging development is Baptiste’s emergence. He seems to have acquitted himself well to date. It seems we are most advanced for Souttar. If we can also resolve McGuinness’ future as part of the deal that would be even better. I think we can afford to be patient then for the other centre back. Maybe a buy (Argie lad), maybe a loan (Alleyne?); options will be there.

While BBD hasn’t moved I can see him being the preferred Hamer replacement. If Hamer somehow remains, then perhaps a lower profile will be targetted so BBD doesn’t come just to watch Hamer start.

So whilst the marbles haven’t fallen quite yet I think we are in a sense well advanced in the transfer kaplunk 😉

The more and more I think of it, the squad we have is more than capable of a Top 8 finish (as it is!).
We have some very experienced players in Doherty, Riedewald & Bamford. I also think Rothwell has a big part to play this season.
Add to that Souttar if he comes in and potentially Kalvin Phillips.

Chong & Cannon have lots to prove this season. I think Cannon gets 10+

I know we often look up on our team in a more pessimistic way to others, but i genuinely feel we have a good number of players that most teams in the Championship would love to have in their ranks:
  • Cooper
  • Tanganga
  • Seriki
  • McCallum
  • Burrows
  • Jairo
  • Peck
  • Hamer
  • O'Hare
  • Bamford
  • Campbell
Be good to see Arblaster recover back to his pre-injury.

I do feel some big name will depart, but if we go into the season like this, we should easily be Top 8:

GKs
  1. Cooper
  2. Davies
  3. +New

CBs
  1. Tanganga
  2. Souttar
  3. McGuinness
  4. Baptiste

Alleyne linked on loan

RWBs
  1. Seriki
  2. Doherty (can cover CB)

LWBs
  1. McCallum (can cover CB)
  2. Burrows
CDMs
  1. Riedewald
  2. Peck
  3. Rothwell
  4. Arblaster
Phillips linked on loan

WINGERS/CAMs
  1. Hamer (can cover CDM)
  2. O'Hare
  3. Donovan
  4. Chong

Mattondo - been on trial
Brereton-Diaz
- heavily linked again (can cover ST)

STs
  1. Bamford
  2. Cannon
  3. Campbell
  4. One
Agreed with this although the GK spot will likely be either Betts or Hewitson from the U21s

Despite all the so called itk’s - I think we’re struggling to get deals over the line due to our lack of cash & the fact that no one wants those terrible players signed last summer.

I can’t see us doing much until last few days of the transfer window when clubs get separate to sign / offload players from squads who they can’t afford to keep on their wage bills eg. Saints have Archer & BBD and Leicester have Choudary, Souttar.

i think your spot on udders we need outgoings to be able to bring players in and to be honest i would take all of the 4 players youve mentioned even archer who despite a bad time here before i still think theres a top championship striker there given the proper service

Anyone who was expecting multiple big-ticket signings this summer was just setting themselves up for disappointment. We’re no longer a parachute club and went into the summer needing to cut a huge amount from our budget.
We’re going to be largely dependent on free transfers and loans, and even those mean getting current players off the wage bill. With Brookes sold I think Souttar is possible if CW chooses to prioritise that. But I don’t see us paying a significant fee for anyone else: definitely not without some more sales.

Terrible players with long, expensive contracts. Some of those signings are a real burden.

Yep - sadly - last summers panic buys were the last example of how this club has squandered most of the £500 million we’ve received as a consequence of our 3 premier league seasons and parachute payments. Virtually nothing to show for it. We should be used as an example of how NOT to go about promotion to the Premier League to other clubs.

That sounds like a him problem. Not an us or an Oné problem, babes.
Its also the balance of the squad and keeping the whole squad onboard.

Oné, is behind:

Bamford
Cannon
Campbell

For what looks like at the moment, one starting CF. (I don't think he's a left wing)

Its the challenge of bringing through youth. Do you play them ahead of those other 3 players and risk them getting put out.

Best thing for Oné would be for us to go 2 up top and for someone to get an injury. Bit like when Peck got into the team because of Blaster, and he then took his chance.

Didn't we start this summer with those who study the accounts and have some understanding of the financial rules telling us we needed to raise £20m from player sales and save £10m from the wage bill.?

If that remains the case or even close to it then we've probably still some way to go .

The squad is threadbare and low on quality as it is, so I won't go wishing for any injuries, but I take your point and agree with it. For me, the answer is we go with 2 up top on a regular basis, and we rotate the 4 forwards week in, week out as part of our 5 subs and we work to forge pairings out of the four of them. Use what we have.
