I always rated Heidar Helguson at Watford in the early 2000s.

I also was excited when we signed Luke Beckett who had scored for fun for Stockport County

1st game back in the Championship Brentford at home ... The Ginger Pirlo -- Ryan Woods thought he was a brilliant player wanted us to sign him ... never did ..

Buying Matt Elliott from Oxford in the summer of 1990 to replace Stan, or Earl Barrett who was also still in the 2nd division with Oldham.

Also in mid 80s they were some gems in the bottom two divisions who went on to be top flight regulars. Robbie Earle and Mark Bright at Port Vale, Dean Saunders at Brighton, Cascarino at Gillingham.
I was at Oxford when Michel vonk got injured in the warm up he never played again.
Elliott was in the Oxford team he terrorised us and scored.
Howard Kendall should have signed him based on that game alone

Looking at his career, I've cocked up. We did lose 3-0 away at Oxford in Jan 1990 but he wasn't at the club then🤦‍♂️

I remember around 1985 Porterfield wanted to sign Ray Houghton, who was at Fulham at the time, for about £250k and the board turned him down. He also wanted to sign Peter Nicholas, the Palace midfielder. I think this was when he threw his toys out of the pram and we ended up with a Dad's Army that included Withe, Thompson and Mortimer.

Edit: Houghton subsequently signed for Oxford.

I remember Warnock congratulating himself on resisting Nicky Butt's wage demands during our season in the Prem. I wonder how much we might have benefitted from his experience in those last few games.

Look at some of these who we could genuinely have been in for in the last decade.

In 2015 he was on loan at non-league Weston-super-Mare from Exeter. Ollie Watkins
In 2015 he was an academy player at Hull with almost no profile nationally. By the mid-2020s he was West Ham's main man: Jarrod Bowen
in 2015. He bounced around on loans before exploding at Peterborough and Brentford: Ivan Toney

This is just three, who else could we have had and missed out on? Why don't we go this route in future?

Another going nowhere thread, won’t change a thing but gets everyone thinking in the past…

Saw that Seol-Young Woo - that Korean RB that we supposedly got offered but decided on Ben Godfrey instead - started their draw against Holland the other day
Oops, getting my WC matches mixed up there. I meant of course their win over the Czechs. He definitely played though

Well actually look to the past and then see what we can do in the future - are there any players out there now we can pick up that will go on to be very good players in the top flight?

He was already scoring well for his age under Wilder at Northampton. That's how he got his move to Newcastle.

Baring in mind CW had already managed him and DIDN'T go back in for him when he was very gettable you have to wonder why??
