Look at some of these who we could genuinely have been in for in the last decade.

In 2015 he was on loan at non-league Weston-super-Mare from Exeter. Ollie Watkins
In 2015 he was an academy player at Hull with almost no profile nationally. By the mid-2020s he was West Ham's main man: Jarrod Bowen
in 2015. He bounced around on loans before exploding at Peterborough and Brentford: Ivan Toney

This is just three, who else could we have had and missed out on? Why don't we go this route in future?

I remember wishing we had signed Matt Phillips when he was on loan here

Good thread. These were interesting because it felt they were gettable and it wasn’t as if they were not a known quantity. I’d also add Eze when he was at QPR and we were in the PL and also Olise when he was at Reading both seemed players worth looking at.

Further back, Kevin Davies was a while at a Chesterfield just begging to be signed and had a great career at Bolton and Southampton.

I guess Maradona always wins this question..Danny Murphy during the Warnock prem season, is also one that sticks in my mind. Given how that season panned out, he would promise the difference in us staying up and a great chance of consolidating for the next season. It was a period of downturn in his career, we could have capitalised on. The catch 22 being, it was possibly not wanting to play for Warnock that meant it never happened.

The Maradona one obviously wins, even though I wasn’t born then.

Warnock has mentioned Drogba before, so I’d go for that in my lifetime.

More random, but realistic ones

Rick Holden
Mark Draper
Ben Watson
Marcus Stewart
Excellent thread! Agree on Marcus Stewart and Mark Draper. I'd add Garry Parker. I remember being on holiday and seeing a piece in the Daily Mirror that we were chasing him. That would have been great! (That was in the days of "being close" to signing Bachirou Salou from the Bundesliga - more paper talk)

Parker is a great one. For whatever reason, Garry with 2 r's is my middle name so I always liked him.

Had time for Jason Wilcox as well. Loved a player who'd almost always get a cross in, even when it seemed impossible

That sounds like Alan Woodward who could cross from amazing angles with both feet ! What a player!

I always thought Darren Huckerby would’ve been a good player under Warnock when he was a CF. Even on loan. Forest had him, then Norwich. Thought the only thing we really missed under Warnock was a 20 goal striker, instead we had about 10 strikers who scored about 6 a season.

Buying Matt Elliott from Oxford in the summer of 1990 to replace Stan, or Earl Barrett who was also still in the 2nd division with Oldham.

Also in mid 80s they were some gems in the bottom two divisions who went on to be top flight regulars. Robbie Earle and Mark Bright at Port Vale, Dean Saunders at Brighton, Cascarino at Gillingham.

Not sure whether he ever really fit in the "realistic" bracket but that Dan Burn character Adkins was obsessed with getting turned out to be alright.
