If he’s the one, get him in early.

No point in fucking about when he’s a moon orbit away from cities first team and he’s top target and seemingly wants to come.

Need to get the squad shaped up as early as possible this summer not 4 games into the season after dropping stupid points due to having massive gaping squad gaps for the first few games like last season.

I think (and hope) that a fully fit Kalvin Phillips will be a great addition to the side. As always time will tell if he goes one way or the other.

Another blindingly obvious point is that it’s surely better to get business done as soon as possible with him and any other ins and outs.

Wilder has set his stall out verbally with his intentions early enough, it’s a pretty crucial season for his future at the club also so it’s in everyone’s best interests not to be scratching around a couple of days before the first match (or after!)

On last couple of seasons evidence there is understandable scepticism on Philips but he should be a game changer at this level.

The pass Wilder gets for last season is ridiculous. Yes, recruitment and preparation were poor but Wilder was appointed on September 15th. He had 8 months and 40 league matches to get 74 points. We got 60 and a team where half the players clearly didn't want to play for him.

So a 50% improvement in the team players that wanted to play for Selles then?

Yes it was the players being too stupid to understand the brilliant mind of Sellés.

Good god.

Selles preached the virtues of vertical football, to me that means - up in the air as per hoofball.

Vertical describes a direction, line, or plane that points straight up and down, perpendicular to the horizon or a flat, level surface (at a \(90^{\circ }\) angle). It aligns with the direction of gravity. [1, 2, 3]

Though apparently vertical football is played on the horizontal plane i.e. on the ground.

Much like the modern generation use the term sick, being something that is 'well good innit', as opposed to the illness or upset stomach of my generation.

Maybe more the bastardisation of the English language rather than stupidity?

Not sure if people are being deliberately obtuse about ‘vertical’ football, it’s a style of football that’s been played since the 90s and is the antithesis of sideways, possession based, pep-ball that everyone hates to watch that wilder has insisted on playing for the last two seasons.

The fact the players wouldn’t/couldn’t buy into the type of football played with success at other clubs is probably more of a sign of the poor mentality of footballers we’ve filled the squad with.

All but a few down tools for both managers last season, Wilder is supposed to be best at creating the Boot Room squad mentality he nicked from Bassett but even that deserted him this year, but even he couldn’t get this squad to be arsed.

The Pep ball that has won virtually every trophy for the past decade?

Pep Ball is great if you're
A) Pep
B) Have billion quid to spend on players who can execute it

Boro passed the ball to death last season and looked great but didn't get over the line doing it.

Southampton may have playing some fast Back to front football

What’s particularly annoying is that fast ‘back to front’ football is what I most associate as the ‘Sheffield United way’ from the Bassett and Warnock days. For nearly 40 years whenever we’ve tried the 10 yards sideways passing it’s never ended well.

Did you miss the period from 2016-2020? Would explain a lot. But ye let's get Blackwell back so we can play the fast, back to front football we all love.

I think it mostly boils down to the players being thick as mince and unable to understand outside the box thinking.
Hull improved after Selles was sacked...

We improved after Selles was sacked.....

Zaragoza improved after Selles was sacked. They still came bottom but actually won a few after he went....

Yes it must be our players who are to blame.

But we always do it that way 😉
