A sharp exit for Saints' Billy

Billy Sharp
Billy Sharp will be handed a free transfer by Saints.
The 28-year-old striker, who joined for £1.8m in January 2012 but has had a string of loan spells, will be allowed to leave St Mary’s for nothing if he receives a suitable offer this summer.
Sharp has returned to Saints for pre-season training in good shape and good spirits, and has impressed new manager Ronald Koeman. However, the Dutchman doesn’t feel that Sharp is going to figure in his plans for the new Premier League season.
As a recognition of his commitment to the club and his effort, Saints are prepared to waive any potential transfer fee to allow Sharp the chance to move on and further his career elsewhere if he gets an offer he wishes to pursue.
Sharp was signed by Nigel Adkins at the very end of the transfer window in January 2012, the pair having previously worked together at Scunthorpe.
The striker, who started his career at Sheffield United, was recruited to provide extra firepower as Saints tried to press home their advantage and secure promotion from the Championship.
He delivered exactly that as Sharp plundered nine goals in just 15 appearances to help Saints climb back into the Premier League.
However, his joy was short lived as promotion proved to be the death knell for his chances at Saints.Since then Sharp has been overlooked by successive managers, figuring just twice for Saints in the top flight.
He spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Nottingham Forest before last season splitting his time between Reading and Doncaster.
It is understood that a number of clubs have already enquired about Sharp’s availability and the news that he could leave on a free is sure to trigger a rush to secure his services before the transfer window closes.

Sharp’s career stats show a striker who has scored 146 goals in 341 appearances while even at Saints, where chances have been limited, he has notched ten goals in 18 appearances.
Even with Sharp out of the reckoning, and Rickie Lambert also sold this summer, Koeman has a few striking options at his disposal.
Graziano Pelle is likely to start the season leading the line with Sam Gallagher and Emmanuel Mayuka also in the squad.
Last season’s top scorer, Jay Rodriguez, could also be considered for the role when he returns from injury.

Bore off.

Would leave to get him on a free but seems Leeds are sniffing around so imagine he will sign for a Championship club, unless the Leeds owner decides that he doesnt like players with a B in their name!

He will have 'earnt' enough over the last few years for money not to be the be all and end all. As a Blades fan with unfinished business, surely the chance of playing for us on less money would be enough of a draw for him and scoring for fun (potentially) in League 1 to boot. Would 2 (or 3) times as much money playing for Leets really be worth more to him ?

It looks like we now sign players according to what the manager wants within a given budget. Sensible owners, getting on with it in no-nonsense low key way, unlike a few clubs.

If you think we're badly run, just wait for the impending shitestorm!

Doubt this will happen. I'm pretty sure he would want to be pretty much guranteed a start, I don't think Clough can give him that with how it seems he wants to play.

Personally think if we are going for another striker option it should be smeone pacy.

I'd agree. The fact that both Steve Bruce and Steve McLaren have cut up rough over transfers - impending or not - speaks volumes. They probably thought 'Lil 'ol Sheffield United' would be pushovers.

NC has shown determination and that's good.

He'll go to a championship club.

A large signing on fee and his wages would be the stumbling block for us.

Again, can you back that up?

I trust you know that were restricted by the financial FairPlay so can't pay ridiculous wages, but I'm guessing we pay pretty well in this division... But you could probably confirm that were paying 'low wages' just like you proved that we've spent nothing on bringing players in... ;)

Why dont you stop asking me stupid questions about what i can and cant prove ? You know i cant prove anything but im not the club fucking accountant
I am a fan on a football forum and i dont have to provide evidence to have an opinion so stop asking me to do things you know i cant. just as you cant provide evidence we are not a selling club who are building a squad on the cheap

It's actually Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP) in league one not Financial Fair Play. Once way you could get round it is to pay the player a big signing on fee, which doesn't count towards SCMP (AFAIK), and then pay them less in wages.

"What's that? He's available? Great! How much are you asking? Free?? Fuck, I'm going to have to pass on this one or else Judge is going to have a tantrum on an internet forum. You sure I can't tempt you into asking for a fee? No? Bugger. Never mind. Thanks anyway."

My understanding is the fee would have to be offset against the length of the contract so the SCMP would still be in affect. Agents fees do come into play as well.

Yeah but like I said before, you made these wild statements, so just asking you to back up what you say... I'm glad you've admitted that you have absolutely no basis for your wonderful statements.

Have I said were not a selling club? Have I said were not building a squad on the cheap?

If you'd bothered to read what I wrote, I've actually applauded the club for their approach to the sale of Harry and I've equally applauded the clubs ability to strengthen without breaking the bank. I just wanted you to back up your statements because you were so sure.

The question of whether this has been a successful summer will be answered in the next few months.

Ah but we've spent nothing this summer
