This is interesting. Who would we pick for a United England WC squad. Criteria
1. Post war only (otherwise wed be picking loads from the 1890s)
2. No.loan players
3. Must be on the basis of their United record. So no Martin Peters, Phil Thompson etc.

Id go for

GK
Alan Hodgkinson
Ted Burgin
Simon Tracey

Defenders

Len Badger
Graham Shaw
Joe Shaw
Jack O'Connell
Harry Maguire
Kyle Walker
Phil Jagielka
Chris Basham

Midfielders
Tony Currie
Jimmy Hagan
Geoff Salmons
Colin Grainger
Dane Whitehouse
Harold Brook
Keith Eddy

Forwards
Mick Jones
Alan Birchenall
Brian Deane
James Beattie
Rob Hulse
Bill Dearden
Derek Pace
Alan Woodward

I should add "consistent performers at the top level" is also a criteria. So no Keith Edwards, Colin Morris etc

(Yes, I know Walker, Maguire and Beattie didnt so that at United, but they did elsewhere AND showed that top.level form at the Lane, unlike Peters, Thompson etc)

How can you have Rob Hulse but not Tony Agana?

Agana has more top flight goals and appearances.
Don't think he did on the goals. Agana had 6 over 1.5 seasons, Hulse 8 over 1 season.

Agana is arguable though, given his pre top flight record..

Having now looked it up, I think they both scored the same amount of top flight goals with 8.

I would've put money on Agana having scored more.

Nah. Agana got 2 in 90-1 and 4 in 91-2. He got one in the League Cup in 90-1, which would take him to 7 in all competitions, but I'm pretty certain he didnt get an 8th

11/5/91 2 v Norwich H
17/9/91 1 v Notts county H
21/9/91 1 v Arsenal A
5/10/91 1 v Leeds A
19/10/91 1 v Forest H

The LC goal was home to Northampton on 10/10/90

He scored 6 for us, 1 for Notts County and 1 for Watford.

On a side issue. One England international in the last 50 years and none for 34 years is pretty dismal.

Nearest we've got since Deane's last game in 1992 would be Ramsdale as 3rd choice goalie in the 2021 Euros and Jagielka getting an England B cap in summer 2007 , but leaving before he got a full cap.

I thought this thread was about players that have represented England and played for United?

Are we just naming favourite English players ?

As Silent said , Jimmy's face didn't fit. Having said that there were several inside forwards who would have taken some replacing. Stan Mortensen- Wilf Mannion-Raich Carter- Harald Hassall- Stan Pearson. Also, 2 Owls inside forwards got more caps than Jimmy but they were nowhere near Jimmy's class- Jackie Sewell and Albert Quixall.

I remember there being strong rumours of a JOC call up before he got injured. Given that the competition at the time was Tyrone Mings, I can believe this to be true.

Only one earned over 10 caps as a Blade... always the bridesmaid.

Was sure Jags got a full cap in the Warnock Prem season... apparently not.

Is Ramsdale our only player to ever go to a major tournament whilst with us?

I am sure Keith Kettleborough was on the fringes of the England squad.

Is this the first (2026) England world cup squad that hasn't had a Blades academy graduate involved since 2010?
