N'Diaye, Berge, Mousset, Souza, Ahmedhodzic...

Someone should let the other 40 clubs above us know they're wasting their time with forrins.
Add the cost of those players up and it sort of fucks the money point up. Good players cost big money wherever they are from.

Goes to show that some are a hit and some are a miss. This thread is about Phillips and whilst he hasn’t played much, if he does get fit he will be an asset. The other point is that it’s not just Phillips. There’s room to add other midfielders, whether they’re British or from overseas. We’re not restricted as the names illustrate. It’s just another wilder stick bingo card to use.

In fairness to Wilder he addressed the financial side of the signing when he announced Phillips was injured. Said we wouldn’t be paying a lot and the deal was structured to reduce costs if he didn’t play.

N'diaye was free and ahmedhodzic cost £3m, which is less than we'll end up paying in wages for Phillips.

These players are out there, other clubs find them. We don't even look because we don't put the effort in and have a management team that prioritises character and personality over ability and physical performance.

We can't seriously say we have an expansive scouting network though. It's highly unlikely we will ever find a Hamer or Vipotnik with our current transfer set up and Wilder clearly prefers people with experience in the English leagues which obviously narrows down the field.

The current top scorer in the league cost nothing after being released in France. We unnecessarily narrow our recruitment down in my opinion. There's obviously more bargains to be had worldwide than just the UK

I'd have him back when you look at the amount of rotten loans we've had in this year.

Maybe we get him in and decide to only have 3 loans instead of 5 or find some other way of being creative with the budget.

Midfield of Phillips, Riedewald (if he stays), Peck (if he stays), Arblaster, Rothwell and AN Other should be a decent enough pool to pick from at this level.

I'd be more worried about who we get in at the back and how fit Campbell is when he comes back in the summer because we can't be relying on Bamford alone.
But not a single one of them can actually run & cover ground, or run forward with the ball.

Maybe slightly harsh on Peck but why do we insist on 2 sitting midfielders with zero mobility.

Your first sentence answers the second here methinks...

If nobody is mobile, then it doesn't matter who plays

We've been told by Wilder and the owners we have a new post Bord data set up. This summer will tell if it's any good. Its clearly something the board want hence their two footed use of it last summer leading to disastrous results.

I was going to use Vipotnik as an example, too. Isidor is another and there are many more.

It's not even a dig at Wilder. Our last 6 transfer windows under 3 different managers have been mostly appalling. Maybe 6 or 7 good players out of the 30-40 signed? It's obvious something needs changing and it's understandable why the Phillips links have concerned fans. If we can get him on a cheap wage he's probably worth the risk but it's not the most positive start to the summer rumours

Tbf the foreigners mentioned were young and signed whislt being one of the worst premier league sides in history. Ben Slimane actually looks decent for Norwich and Traore certainly has a lot more than he's given credit for.

They also didn't cost much... compared to.... say a McGuinness.

The current ownership clearly want(ed) to use newer methods and it went far worse than any window in the last God knows how long. That's not to say data is bad but it needs to be used wisely and it wasn't.

More than 70% of the players starting in the premier league were born outside of the UK.

If you always sign British, you’re severely limiting the talent pool.

The British starters in the premier league are also (usually) far more expensive than their foreign counterparts.

Sunderland signed both Isidor and Mayenda for half what we paid for Cannon and they’re both far fucking better.

It seems a bit a bit pointless and incredibly short sighted - at a high cost. At best we get a good season out of him and then he goes elsewhere.

To be fair to Bettis, i don't think this has cost United much in terms of money, especially as he's gone back now. Was a punt worth taking for all parties, shame it didn't work but that's sport at that level.

I didn’t so much mind the punt this season.. however if we bring him back in the summer someone at the club needs sectioning
