Correct. Hemsley had Best in his pocket. With hindsight, with only one substitute allowed, Gil Reece probably wasn't the best choice. Can't say John Harris wasn't positive though.
Harris wanted Salmons to drop back and help the defence but Salmons was still enjoying where he was so Harris told Reece to help the defence.

Was listening to the opening day memory lane podcast and Roy's piece about the 2008 1-0 loss to Birmingham and its impact later in the season is just 👌, I thought I was the only one who had noticed this.

I vividly remember being about 15 and watching that game in a Brits Abroad type bar in Mallorca with an illicit pint.

Can anyone direct me to a podcast that can block out my Sheffield United memories? Thanks in advance.
Do you have any Wednesday mates? They might be willing to slip you some deludamol... before you know it, you'll be reminiscing about losing to Yeovil and Swindon and how they were actually good for the club long-term

I quite liked the discussion of the younger brother working down the pit but also having thunderbirds wallpaper in his room. So fucking bizarre 🤣

You were spot on about the setting of the mine being a bizarre choice for a film set in Sheffield.

Whilst I have no doubt that there were groups of miners living in Sheffield (before they closed the mines) - there weren't any mines in what I would term Sheffield since Orgreave closed in 1981 - mining was something I associated with the north of South Yorkshire (i.e. around the Barnsley area).

A switch to the steelworks wouldn`t have made any difference to the story at all - its definitely someone operating on "Jobs in Yorkshire = mining" rather than looking any closer into the actuality of the area they are setting the film in.

With David Powell injured, I think the only reserve defenders we had available who had played in the league were Ian MacKenzie (1 appearance) and Mick Heaton (not been in the first team picture for about a year).

With only 1 sub, we weren't going to name either of them.

Yeah, the collieries definitely more of a Barnsley / Donny industry base than Sheff.

Could just as easily have had Russ killed in an offscreen steelworks accident if they'd done their research.

And the other thing that strikes me about WSC - and you touched on this slightly - is that just a year later The Full Monty did a far better job at setting the scene in Sheffield in its first 10 mins - the "City on the move" film from the 60's is immediately counterposed with the start reality of Sheffield in the Mid-Late 90's.

WSC frankly feels like a film set in the mid 80's - in fact it may have been better if it had been made as a period rather than contempory piece.

Ted Hemsley didnt play in the next match (v York in the League Cup) so Frank Barlow wore the number 3 shirt. Ted returned for the next League match and kept his place until the home game against Coventry (Steve Goulding took his place) and returned to the team after the 5-0 defeat at West Ham in the League Cup. Alan Ogden wore the number 3 shirt in the 3-3 home draw against Man City. Ted was right footed and was signed by Arthur Rowley as a right half. Mick Heaton left for Blackburn in October 1971.

New episode out now where we discuss When Saturday Comes. I'd like to say it's to coincide with the new musical that's coming out but in reality we just wanted to talk about When Saturday Comes

I’m that sad that I saw this film at the cinema back in the day. My only memory of the whole affair was a lass in the audience legitimately screaming when Sean Bean got his todger out (and everyone laughing at her).

I only went to see a Sheffield United success fantasy. She only went to see a man’s willy. I think both of us left disappointed.

Enjoyed the pod. Coincidentally I watched it on Saturday night so went as a great accompanying piece.

I’d always assumed it was written entirely as a vehicle for Sean Bean to live out his dream of playing for Yooonited.

I do find it amusing how universally Blades fans take the view that “it’s shite but it’s ours”. No doubt if it was a film about the pigs it would be Oscar worthy and more people went to watch it globally than Independence Day.

Funny to think this and The Full Monty which are possibly the most high profile depictions of Sheffield on screen came out within a few months of each other….and both featured the same Blades kit. I wonder if we’ll get a rehash of it for the 30th anniversary year next season?

i'd brush up on my geography if I was you.

The pits at Dinno, Malthy, Thurcroft and Kivo, were nowhere near Barnsley.

And despite Thatcher's best efforts, miners were allowed to drive, so the other pits around Rotherham were aslo very reacahable.

My geography is fine thanks - the 4 you mention are on the other side of the M1/M18 - very much not Sheffield in my book.

And yes miners could drive, but that's not the depiction (from memory) in the film. Its very much presented as a "pit town" but also "in sheffield".

And I did say "I associated" mining with the north of S Yorks- again probably baked into me through years of popular media presenting it incorrectly.

I'm that sad that not only did I watch it at the cinema, but I went wearing my United shirt - the same one worn by Beano in the film.

Got a few 'what a twat' looks from other cinema goers in Loughborough. I did drag all my Uni mates along to watch it, they all thought it was shite.

I've got the soundtrack too (amazingly doesn't appear to be available on Spotify) including the signature "When Saturday Comes" by Joe Elliott which I won't hear a word against.

"The clock strikes 3,
And it's time to be a hero,
Do you wanna be a Blade?
It's a feelin' that you'll never knowwww"

Really enjoyed the pod.

YouTube to the rescue

I had the soundtrack in my notes to talk about but it felt like we'd spoken too long without actually getting into the film so I left it out. Might do another podcast on Blades related songs
Yep a lot of potential there.

As an example, my dad had this and it's one of the earliest records I can remember being played in our house growing up.

Thread here from a few years ago including a Dropbox link to the song.

You have no idea how often I find myself humming this

But doesn't Jimmeh get off the bus (51!!!) at Greaves Park to walk to the pit? Surely that is in Sheffield ;). (I remember that really jarring - even though it is a film and I shouldn't be so precious).

On a serious point, agree that the steelworks would have been a better fit.

You do know that parts of Sheffield City are actually on the other side of the M1, don't you?

Not much (based on Google maps) - the below pretty much matches where I'd have drawn the border of Sheffield (it may not be right but I expect I wouldn`t be either)

No, not much, but more than none, which your earlier post suggested.

Pedantic yes, but I used to go away with some of the Dinno mob in the early 80s, and if you'd suggested to them that they weren't 'Sheffield', they would not have taken it well.
