For the past few weeks I’ve been swaying between us sneaking into the Play Offs or falling short.

As we’re half way through the season I’ve just had a quick look at what points we might realistically reach and where that would put us.

Obviously Coventry are storming the league but if we look at Middlesbrough 2nd with 43 points and Ipswich 3rd with 38 points, I think we can agree a second half haul of 40 points would be a cracking effort.

That, combined with our current total of 26 points, would put us on 66 points.

Unfortunately, history shows us that in the last 10 seasons, that amount would not get us into 6th spot. Last season was the closest where Bristol City finished on 68 points but most seasons you need to be well into the 70’s.

I’m now at the point where I’m just going to enjoy the highs and lows of the next 23 games and hopefully see a rebuild to allow us to see a better attempt at promotion next year.

Simple maths would allow us automatic promotion ! Reality suggests we will end outside the top six.

It's always been a long shot to make the play offs after the first few games. We were miles off it. We aren't far from it now but we need to essentially have autos form to do it and instead we are more like a play off form side.

It's definitely doable.
Especially if we can keep Bamford. And him and others fit.

Really can't see what the aspiration for Premier League football is all about, especially with the current squad.

If we made the playoffs, history tells us we are destined to fail. If we achieved promotion, history tells us it is brief and brutal.

Unless we are owned by an extremely wealthy set of businessmen who understand and enjoy football (and that's not the case and hasn't been, ever) and we have a manger who is completely watertight and tactically brilliant (and we haven't really had that in any consistency) and we have a decent sized squad of talented, mostly Premier League quality players who know how to gain advantage and hang on to it we are ... and always have been ... just a bang average Championship level outfit.

Alan Ball summed us up mid seventies by calling us a 'glorified third division team'. Whilst I think he was being somewhat uncharitable, we wasn't far wrong on that.

Anyone who supports our beloved club through thick and thin without reservation secretly knows that it is a difficult existence. It is never 'easy football'. You look at Aston Villa, Sunderland, Brighton. No bigger clubs than ours, but when they push for the top, there's big shoulders behind them. They know their time in the sunshine will be better, better than ours ever will be. Sheffield United just don't attract that kind of popularity and material support.

Until we 'become', any thoughts and dreams of the upper storeys of English football are a bit fanciful. We are what we are.

Cheers for stating the obvious 👍 all those that thought we had any chance were well and truly deluding themselves.

We’ll piss the league from Jan.

Frank will bottle it

In the quantum universe, we are already occupying a playoff spot. As well as being mid-table in Division One and joint top and bottom of Division Two. Probably best not to look too deeply into the quantum maths then. :(

Despite the terrible start, it's the throwing away of games from a winning position away at Preston and Wrexham, and home to Norwich. Otherwise we'd now be 2 points of 6th.
All ifs, buts and maybes now, so can't see us having the consistency to knock out the 6 or 7 game winning streak we need ASAP.

That's the spirit.
Good job none of our players - especially Bamford are reading this.
It’s called being realistic, we can all live in fantasy land. If the players read this site, I’m sure they’d find some real home truths that aren’t based on fantasy.

Realistic - bottom three team all season, with wild results for the past month or so.

Fantasy - We’re definitely getting in the play offs.

You don't think Villa and Sunderland are bigger clubs than United ???

Also, spending just 12 seasons in our existence outside the top 2 divisions probably suggests we're not a 3rd Division club.

Villa and Sunderland, pound for pound about equal in size and following. Sunderland, like us, haven't torn many trees up recently and Villa been inconsistent. Both have found form, backing and players. Have we?

As said, I didn't agree entirely with Alan Ball. I do think he was trolling us (he sat on the ball soon after in a right old drubbing at the Lane) just to reinforce the point, but his gesture we may be a bit above ourselves back then is as evident as today.

I think you're the one trolling here.

Villa have averaged 30K or more since the mid 90s and over 40k on multiple occasions.

Their 7 top flight titles and multiple cup wins (both), blind units honours... Then they have that little star on their badge too.

Sunderland blind us in terms of support too - coming from a 1 club town helps, but they took have 6 top flight titles

I still think we have the capability to make the play offs. I think those in their are really failing to achieve consistency. Look at Hull drawing at Hillsborough.

But, it feels like what’s the point? Look at Wolves. Absolutely demoralising supporting them and they aren’t even a newly promoted team!

Yes I’d like to have a season where we go up and break the play off hoodoo. But then I’d dread what comes next.
