Formation Last Night

Saw the team sheet last night and presumed it was a 4-4-2, Bamford and Cannon up top, Chong and Gus wide with Riedewald and Rothwell in the middle.

Riedewald was dropping in at CB regularly, yet also spent big chunks in a more natural CM role, he also slotted In at LB when Burrows pushed forwards.

Rothwell was left isolated in the middle, he looked our only traditional CM at points so was completely overrun.

Was Gus meant to shuffle into CM when burrows went forwards, at points he was in the centre of the park but also seemed to verge on being a 3rd forward, I’m not sure if this was intended or lack of positional discipline.

A bunch of us on the Kop couldn’t work out the formation, was it intentional? Something different that Wilder was trying or were we just that disjointed and being dragged out of position.

Were we the only ones who were left scratching our heads at half time?

When we had the ball it was the intention to let JR drop to make a back 3 of sorts, allow the full backs to play really wide meaning Hamer could make another man inside. The reality was that we surrendered possession so easily that we never got it to work as players were caught in transition far too often.

I think with Blackburn being so compact it was an ok idea for us to try and rotate players in and out of different areas to find pockets of space. Sadly they are too shit to execute that.

I think with Blackburn being so compact it was an ok idea for us to try and rotate players in and out of different areas to find pockets of space. Sadly they are too shit to execute that.

Said in his interview he was looking for 3pts to get 60 then 66, so he changes a team that had won two in a row for that tripe, no wonder the players are baffled. Crowd was down yesterday and Saturday will be the same, most want the season over now imo

It reminded me of the Selles set up. As you said, Rothwell isolated as Riedewald was so deep

Chong looked well off the pace and also surrounded when he got on the ball.

Blackburn were very compact, I think bringing O'Hare for Cannon would have actually opened them up with him playing off Bamford.

Bizarrely I think if we had played a bit more hoofewaffe to Bamford we would have got more success because their defenders were not great at dealing with a high ball, a few times they had 2 players going for the same ball. Instead we opted to play it across the back a million times.

Interesting in the second half Bindon came on as RCB / RB rather than left of the pairing, Tanganga moved over.

Yeah I guess the downside of that was that Blackburn were picking every loose ball whenever we did get forward

How many times did we make 20 to 30 short sideways and backward passes either in our own half or along the half way line? On the odd occasion we tried to slowly move the ball forward, at the end of our 30 pass routine, Chong would lose it trying to beat a man or we'd overplay it, play a bad pass and turn it over. We wasted countless minutes doing this, stifled ourselves by taking the energy out of the game and made it the easiest game Blackburn had all season.

A lot of fans baled at half time because they'd gone to see our team get the ball forward, have a go and look like they cared. We didn't do any of that. You could see it coming, you can sense it but Wilder chose to just let it happen. No early changes (20 to 25 minutes) in either personnel or tactics and sorry but after 45 minutes the damage was done. I don't think the old Wilder would have done that in a league game, I don't think he'd have started that eleven but this version has either been left behind in his coaching, doesn't see what's happening or just doesn't give a fuck anymore.

I used to love his honesty in the post match interviews but not anymore, it's just a series of excuses and the same tired old crap. Rather than become the apologist that he's becoming why not set us up better, pick the strongest team and if you can't motivate the players to be better than they were yesterday then seriously, have a think that you might be the problem and do something about it. Every team loses games but the ease with which we gift games to really bad teams is a MASSIVE cause for concern.

He tried it last year with choudry dropping deep and it didn’t work then either!
