I'd be surprised if there weren't a few bigger clubs (or clubs higher up the ladder) than Wolves who are watching. Fully expecting a bit of a bidding war and reckon we'll end up with roughly 3 million for him.

I'm trying my hardest to suppress any ill feeling for Harry in this I must admit.

When Maguire does go we can't be as critical as when we let the two Kyle's go and James Beattie, back then we where in the Championship and 'supposedly' trying to get back in the Premiership, now we are about to start our fourth season in the third tier and have finished lower each season we have been down here.

Harry has the potential to be one of the best centre backs in the country, he has got to progress himself and he is not going to do that whilst stuck in the third division for what could be another two or three years.

What we must do is try to push the fee as high as possible, remembering that he is in the last year of his contract, 3 million would be a decent amount.

Fully agree.

According to Lane Legend on Mad (he's definitely ITK) a PL club is enquiring in the background. Forget Wolves, he won't go there but I think a potential PL bid is the reason talks are on hold.

Sadly I think he may well go now - United need to use the money sensibly.

Do people not listen to the club? Harry is staying.
Cloughy never said harry is staying,he simply said we have turned 2 bids down but if or when the right offer comes in we will have to consider whether its in the best interest of the club,i.e bring in 2 or 3 players with the money.

Harry Maguire has asked Sheffield United to put their talks over a new contract on hold until his future at Bramall Lane is resolved, manager Nigel Clough confirmed last night.

Wolverhampton Wanderers saw a bid, understood to be worth £1.5m, rejected for the centre-half earlier this week having previously failed with a £1m offer.

Clough, who yesterday denied that Andy Butler’s arrival from Walsall is designed to pave the way for Maguire’s departure, told The Star: “Harry has asked to put them (the talks) on hold and wait and see what happens over the next few weeks.

“It’s perfectly understandable but, I’ll repeat what I said before, that in my opinion, his career would be better off by staying here.”

United’s bargaining position has been strengthened by the knowledge that, even though Maguire’s present deal expires next year, they would still be entitled to considerable compensation should he depart as a free agent.

“If something comes in we deem to be beneficial to us as a club then we’ll discuss it,” Clough said. “But that hasn’t happened yet and Harry’s situation has not been altered.” Stir.

Mal Bannigan said he's definitely staying and going to see out his contract regardless of whether he signs or not as it's best for the club as we don't need the money and can bring in the 2 or 3 players anyway if we needed.

See what your saying but i think it will come down to what cloughy wants to do with the playing staff not Mal Bannigan, but that is refreshing to hear from Mr Bannigan,Derby blade.

If Harry wants to run his contract down then we should flog him now.

Does anyone know how much we will get for him as a development fee if he fooks off for free at end of next season?

Nope he said we would like Harry to stay even if he doesn't sign a new contract, no guarantees mentioned at all, he's far to clued in to do that. Don't want people thinking this then if HM leaves bashing the club saying "Ohh but they guranteed he was staying... blah...blah...blah"

I agree with Wizadry, I personally think NC has a view on what HM is worth both in terms of transfer fee and wages and I believe it will be NC's decision regarding accepting any bids.

See post 81 for who has made offer from PL.

Obviously if we get offered silly money we'd have to sell, but to me it sounds like unless we get that money (£5-7m ish possibly?) then the club "have no interest in selling him" as MB said in his interview as he's worth that much to us in promotion pushing and team togetherness.

£5 - £7million is ludicrous money for him.

If someone offers 2.5 - 3 million we will sell imo - can use that to then buy Coady, a right back , another centre half and still have about a million left to get a striker with.

The actual quote from Brannigan was :- “It is one where if you look at the amount of money that could come in on Harry, yes you could utilise it. But we’d much prefer Harry stay as part of our squad. Having players in there who are settled, who know the manager, who know the team, know their team-mates has much more value than actually trying to utilise funds to shake things up sometimes which can be detrimental to the rest of the club.”

No guarantees made fair enough. But he says a lot more than just a bland "we would like Harry to stay".
He outlines in detail, the reasons why he has much greater value to us on the pitch than by cashing in to the tune of a miserly £1M or £2M. How shaking things up with his transfer fee may be detrimental to the club.
As long as the final decision on selling him does rest with Clough, that's fine. That's all we ask.

If you listen to the interview it sounds like we feel he's worth that much to us that's all I'm saying and would require that much for us to consider selling as we don't need to and have no interest in selling him

I know you weren't saying 'you' thought he was worth that much but, again in my opinion, if you think we would turn down £2.5 - 3 million for him then you may be disappointed as I cannot see that we would.

The way it's reading, I reckon he'll go to Hull for £1.5-£2m. They'll be able to offer more wages than Wolves (aah, bless!) and we move on. Hopefully with Coady and Brayford.

I think he will stay but we should not sell him at the 11th hour (like kmac) unless we have a replacement.

I agree that if he goes it will be to a Premier league club but for more than £2mill. I also think he will be loaned back to us for a season if he does go.

I wouldn't want him back on loan. If he wants to leave, bollocks to him. I'd rather us stick Kennedy in than take Maguire back on loan if he does leave.

To be honest, I don't think he'll go anyway.

The way I see it is if Harry has asked for contract talks to be put on hold then a club has made an offer and that offer has been accepted.
If Harry isn't talking to us the reason is because he is talking to someone else, that doesn't mean it will be the right move for him but hey if he doubles his wages he will be happy to sit in a nice leather Recaro on matchdays. Your choice now Harry snatch the Wonga or learn by playing 1st team football here, at the end of the day if he moves to a Premiership club he will only be loaned out anyway.

have a like Latters

i feel the same if he dont want to sign a new deal then dont let the door hit him on the way out.

Agreed. He's a good centre half for our league, but he certainly isn't good enough to hold us to ransom. He might not be doing this, but if he has asked for talks to be put on hold because of interest from other teams, it sounds like this could be the case.

We have let far better players go in the past, and with very little outcry from the fans. McDonald and Quinn spring to mind from the recent past.

Maguire is good, but he is far from irreplaceable.

No problem if 1, we get 2+ million for him and 2, if the money is spent on better quality than Butler, JCR and Basham.

We are quickly going from a team who I thought would do well this year and continue without many changes in the championship when promoted to a team that is being built to get us out of this division, however would need major surgery next summer. \

That being said I think the guys brought in so far are squad fillers, however losing Maguire would be another loss to the 11 who finished last season.

My opinion is that he would be very hard to replace. Made the team of the year for each year we've been down here. That is some achievement, personally I think Clough values him at 2.5-3mill. There's still a good 3 months left in this window and it's inevitable that he will depart at some stage.
