When you hear Betis saying things like "Selles didn't get involved with player recruitment"
there's no wonder we're in the position we're in.

The manager should select all first team recruits, only then can he be held totally responsible for results
Not what I heard.

He said Selles didn’t get as deeply involved with the daily running of the club. Spoke to him 3 times a week and perhaps one meeting.
Contrast with CW - spoken with 3 times a day and meet regularly.

Selles also responsible for Binman and Lightweight Louie as well as telling Bettis that McB couldn’t train with Dem, so he had to go to North Barnsley.

He also said that Godfrey was a target from June so that coincides with SeLLLLLLEs starting his stellar Blades career.

Signs until January, low risk signing. Let’s hope he can get fit.

If we are to sign him then a short term deal to January would make sense. Review at that point and let that determine whether he's here in 2026 or not.

What I expect to happen is a contract to 2027 because Wilder is convinced he has the midas touch; and less than 90 minutes in total.

Fucking hell. United in doing something sensible SHOCKER.

Doesn't happen in any successful football club in Europe!
We’re in Europe, I’ll give you that.

Just to point out, though, we’re not Bayern Munich, PSG or Barca. We’re not even Young Boys of Berne. We haven’t even got a Cat 1 academy.

Ah, but a DoF will sort all that aaarrt. 😂😂

there are several historical scouting write-ups and statistical profiles that describe Jaïro Riedewald as a versatile, ball-playing defender/defensive midfielder who came through Ajax’s academy; they emphasise his comfort on the ball, positional versatility (CB / LCB / LDM / LB), anticipation/reading of play, and some limitations in consistent output and physical dominance. Sources below summarise the recurring themes and how analysts have compared him.

What scouts historically say about his style

Ball-playing defender from Ajax: early profiles highlighted him as an Ajax academy product who can step into midfield, play progressive passes and help build from the back — i.e. a left-footed, technically comfortable defender who can operate in possession. This was emphasised in write-ups around his move to Crystal Palace.

Positional versatility: he’s repeatedly described as able to play centre-back (especially left-side), left-back and as a defensive/holding midfielder — managers used him in all three roles. That versatility is a constant in transfer and scouting coverage.

Strengths scouts note: composure on the ball, passing range (comfort in short and some long passes), good anticipation/positioning, and the ability to step into midfield to progress play. Statistical summaries also show a positive profile for clearances and interceptions in some seasons.

Weaknesses frequently mentioned: not the most dominant aerially or physically for a centre-half (height ~1.82 m), occasional inconsistency in defensive duels and limited creative output (not a major chance-creator). Some reports flagged he can be error-prone when asked to be the primary defensive leader.

Typical statistical / data notes (modern scouting)

FBref and other analytics pages show him as a defensively active player (interceptions, tackles, clearances) with decent progressive passing/carrying numbers for his positions, but not top-end creativity metrics. These tools are useful if you want season-by-season percentile context.

Player comparisons — how people have framed him

Analysts and fan scouting pieces have framed him as a “ball-playing” defensive option rather than a purely physical stopper. That leads to comparisons — not as exact name-for-name clones — but to the type of player who can play left-side of a back three or sit as a left-sided defensive midfielder (metrics comparisons on sites like FBref/FootballTransfers show similar-profile lists and statistical peers). In short: think of him as the kind of modern left-footed defensive player who trades raw size for technical comfort and positional intelligence.

So basically on trial (but can play) until we send Soumare back in January.

The point is that neither Cannon nor Brewster was a £2m gamble. They were both marquee signings who came with huge question marks for anyone with an ounce of analytical ability which would suggest that their acquisition was driven more by a view on the intangibles from the football side.

I can't find an fbref report for Cannon's time at Stoke. Here's last season:

That's a chart for a below average striker. He takes a lot of low-quality shots but doesn't score. He wins a few headers but he's 6' so he should be above average in the air.

As this is a thread about Riedewald, here's his report. He's another non-attacking, defensively solid midfielder.

Who should dovetail nicely in a spoiling two with Matos, both charged with winning the ball back when Matos or Hamer gives it away.

No, the point I was making is that it shouldn't just be the manager who is culpable for signing expensive flops.

Marquee singings you could argue beacuse of the price we paid, but in reality they both was bought for developing as young strikers, we dont see it that way beacuse of the prices paid are not the norm for supporters of our club, as I said no one would bat and eye lid if they didnt cost what they did, and thats down on the negation team and board level.

Truth be told its on everyone one invlovled, not just one singular person.

Is it that simple if there's an obligation to buy?

Think his parent club would have to agree.

3 caps for Holland, 60 appearances for Ajax, 80 appearances for Palace. Must be something there?

6ft handsome bastard with dreadlocks, chilled Dutch demeanour, same youth set up as Laurens Ten Heuvel, what’s not to love?

Ooh, hello 😍

The full Cannon FBRef scouting report is hilariously bad (they always cover the last 365 days)

He's bad (against his peers) at almost everything

One of the biggest talents of the Ajax academy, have seen him play quite a lot in the youth and his technical abilities were top notch for a defender. Not sure how he developed and obviously a gamble, but his technique at age 16 was already better than most Championship players so hopeful that this will work out!

If im reading that correctly, he's excellent at getting his shots blocked, and elite at miscontroling the ball.

He takes our "blades players haircut challenge" to another level unfortunately. I can only foresee dressing room rivalry and competition.

Sam McCallum was front runner for a considerable amount of time only to be dethroned by Tahith Chong. Riedewold is basically the new number 1 best hair dude. Next best hope is Arblaster returning to the first team with an Ibiza Final Boss style haircut.
