Chasing Peterborough

There have been a number of games now under Clough with a little more luck or a greater presence in the final third I could easily seen us taking all three points. It'd be interesting to see where we'd be right now if we had.

Or if Mr Weir had won just one or two matches more.

True, but equally you could say that about the opposition - Brentford or Orient for example.

Indeed. Though the latter option may have kept Mr Weir employed for slightly longer.

Orient only had one effort anywhere near all day :)

You're right though, I'm merely pointing out the fine line between success and not.

Yes it is a fine line, but I'm more concerned about the time, in the last two games, it's taken us to get the pace of the game. Sincerely hope this isn't the case at Wembley.

Or after Notts County he'd have fucked off telling us he'd peaked.

The argument about Weir winning another two matches is a bit of a non starter. Had he done that we might not have sacked him or delayed it and we could've missed out on Clough altogether.

Would you say that in the last few weeks though, that we've taken our foot off the accelerator a little? We've certainly had to re-jig things a little having lost Harry, Harris, Baxter and Scougall with knocks and suspension in Harry's case.

I'm pretty sure that as Clough has stated in the last week or so, the focus is on Wembley and that's our priority.

It seems like the league has been about keeping in touch with Peterborough, but not hunting them down. If we beat hull I reckon we'll be focused on one last league push, but with 5 games left it'll be almost gone

If Peterboro get the promotion jitters and lose their two Easter games and we win ours, we'd be five points off sixth spot with three to play. They'd only have two games left, and they'd know that a loss in eithe one of them could let us in.

I know it's not going to happen, but for argument's sake let's say it did, and we won the play off semi. Who'd fancy us in a Play Off Final against, say, Orient? And would anyone bother going?

I wish we could win all five remaining matches just to see how close we would get to 6th.

I agree, and despite clough probably playing a lot of the younger lads and fringe players to give them a chance and to see if they can fit into his plans, I believe we can.

What I know for certain is that clough and the team will do everything to at least try and win them all. What a difference a few months make, I feel the sky's the limit atm.

Well that's 3 points closer - Peterborough certainly keeping it interesting.

Their remaining games: Carlisle at home, Shrewsbury away, Port Vale at home. I can see them losing at Shrewsbury, winning against Vale, and dropping points to Carlisle.

Unfortunately, if that scenario plays out and we win our remaining games, we still need Swindon to drop points from Bradford H, Notts County A, and Rotherham H.

Well, after tonight's results, we are potentially five points off sixth place - presuming we win our game in hand.

It still looks very unlikely, but Peterborough's players must be shitting it right now with just a four point gap to Swindon. They bottled it last season remember.

On paper, Posh have got three easy games. Carlisle, Shrewsbury and Port Vale. But Carlisle will be scrapping for their lives on Monday, but Shrewsbury will almost certainly be down by the time they play boro next week, as their Monday game is away at Preston. If Boro lose to Carlisle and beat Shrewsbury, they will be on 70 points going into their final game v Port Vale. If we win all our three remaining games we'll be on 68 going into our final game.

Of course we also need Swindon to drop points. Things would have been so different if that dodgy disallowed goal in the Swindon game had stood, and we'd gone on to get three points..

Let's see what the table looks like when the dust settles on Monday. Chances are it will all be over by then, but you never know.

We just need to keep winning.

Anything else is a bonus.

I don't buy this 'teams will be scrapping for their lives' thing; these teams are at the bottom after 43 games for a reason, that being they're not very good. Peterborough SHOULD have too much for the sides they've got left to play (Vale perhaps excluded).

Just do our bit, win all our remaining games, and see where we end up. Assuming there isn't a big swing in goal difference then we can only afford Peterborough to pick up a maximum of 3 more points which given their fixtures is incredibly unlikely, although not improbable.

Also perhaps worth mentioning that with today's results we are now mathematically guaranteed safety .

You can see it now, toy town instructed by fat boy lose to Swindon on purpose to end our hopes!

Disappointing we didn't score more goals today. Four more wins is unlikely to make up a GD of ten even if they lose a couple.

You can guarantee that the three teams already in the play offs with nothing to play for would prefer us not to finish in sixth. Watch Evans play the kids against Swindon.

As unlikely as it is, wouldn't it be fantastic to sneak that final play-off spot. I kind of wish it was either on or off though. The lingering hopes off the play offs have minimised the chances of blooding a few youngsters before the season end. Can see us missing out on GD.

Looked at the table this morning and it just looks too unlikely. Win against port vale and pull them out of it, but I think with Swindon looking poised to sneak past Peterborough then we'll probably miss out.

That said, win all our games and see where we end up. Would be good to finish in the top ten, anything else is a bonus

Eight changes by Toytown and Evans saying 'what's good for the goose etc'

The chasing peterbrough thread is now over ,i think infact i know they will have a thread on their site next season called chasing sheff utd for top spot;)

In sir nige we trust

True, perhaps next year we can have a "How far are we ahead of Posh" thread.

I would be surprised if they make it through the play-offs. Preston look strong.

HH

Could still be 7th.

Congrats to the Posh for finally securing 6th, and keeping our season alive until the end of April. Watch them go and win the Play Offs now.

I love your optimism, however, having heard many times over the years about how "the Manager will be backed by the Board to build a promotion challenging side"; forgive me if this cynical old bas**rd waits until he sees the colour of the Prince's money before I start chilling any bottles of celebratory beverage !!!

So near and yet so far has been the order of the day sooooo many times in my lifetime .......
Fingers crossed !!
