Weirdly I didn't feel this angry with the defence when we lost 8 nil to Newcastle. Like I said earlier, you can't draw any conclusions on the first game, but this one you absolutely can, RND and mccallum shouldn't be anywhere near the first team, people talk about Robinson but he looked like prime franz beckenbauer in contrast when he came on. We need 2 experienced cb and 1 experienced left back, with 4 defenders as back ups, we certainly aren't going to get that, this hasn't just come to light with the sale of ahmedodzic, this was a problem last year.

Just a weird game. Felt like they scored on every opportunity they had. Then again, we made it really easy for them to capitalise on those opportunities.
I think it’s a bit of a perfect storm. The 6-0 last season will have fired them up. Players that always seemed dangerous for other teams have great debuts (Riis) and we try a new system with no recognised defence. Still, only up from here

Can't wait for the defense of this shower from jimmy ramble side kick man mountain who has defended the club owners all summer over transfer judgement at end of window christ 🤔
I'm waiting for various excuses from the love in. Only first game. Stop bedwetting. Transfer window still open. Bullshit like that. Other teams have had much longer to prepare. Because bullshit etc

So explain why we lost by a 6 goal swing to 89 days ago?

They used their old system? What a crock of...

The 6 nil last season should have been used to prove our dominance. 6 nil fired them up, what, you mean, the new manager. Excuse pathetic

On another day we win that 5-4. On another day we lose 6-5.

It feels a bit like when Scunthorpe beat us 4-0 at home, it's not the end of the world.

This game might well define our season as it's painfully obvious we have 8 attack minded players leaving 2 distinctly average defenders to do all our defending, and it's not going to work.

RND what the flying fuck. Please can I be manager, I can see he’s wank an d doesn’t deserve a start. Pay me thousands for that! But I would care ⚔️

He’s not fit to lace Robinsons boots! Positionally clueless and breathing out of his arse after 5 minutes. Peck not up to the job he was picked for today. Hamer going through the motions after the hour, Cannon looking like, well, Cannon when he came on and One sadly wth the decision making of a 6 foot plus toddler.

Firstly the owners. 2 CB’s, RB, Striker and another CM. And sort out the Hamer situation. Now!

Secondly, even taking into account the above terrible start for Selles. The Wilder fanboys will be in their element but they aren’t the ones he needs to quickly win over.

Edit, thought Bindon looked decent on the ball, Barry looked quality.

One for the statto's.. a request.

When was the last time we conceded 4 at home on the opening day of the season in the top 2 divisions?

What is our heaviest ever home defeat to Bristol City?

RND should have been binned 2 season ago

Last season once football matches were played, we never spent any time in the bottom 3, never mind bottom

First impressions:

Bit of a fluke result (hopefully). BC definitely had the rub of the green today. 7-5 was probably a fair result :)

We engineered our own downfall. Gifting possession for their goals at crucial times and leaving ourselves wide open for counter attacks. A mess.

Attack wise we looked great for a lot of the game. Nice interplay lacking a clinical finish and luck.

Not panicking yet but as several posters mention, some serious work is needed on that defense.
Lacking powerful defenders that can also crucially provide a goal or two from set pieces.

Gus had a terrible game. Didn’t look interested at all. Stupid trip to give away the free kick. Didn’t have a shot on target all game that I remember. Played way too deep. Think he’s going.

Didn’t think we’d miss Souza and Anel that badly but we do.

Congrats to BC. Played well, rode their luck and came away with a flattering score line.
They helped make for a very entertaining game.
£10 says they’ll finish below us in the table again though. Can’t be that lucky every game.

Not excusing the result, just thinking on how it went so wrong.

Well, it wasn't boring, at least.

We looked pretty good going forward first half but poor finishing and poor decisions meant we only scored one. When they broken on us, we were all over the shop. Not so much the defence but the midfield was crap. really crap. Provided no pressing, marking, tracking. Poor tackle by Hamer gives them the freekick. Poor tracking by Burrows gives them the second. We stood off and didn't close down for the third. I am too angry to remember the 4th. The second half was dogshit. We gave up. No energy. Lethargic. no quality.

The only positive is that we looked busy in their box first half. Lots of touches and attacking intent. We lacked clinical finishing. In fairness to City, they were really, really well organised and clinical in front of goal.

Cooper - 5 - He literally gives up half his goal for the freekick. It's a great freekick but there's no reaction. Could do nothing with the others.
Burrows - 3 - Lad looks to have aged 10 years over summer. He looks like a man going through the motions. A few decent deliveries but he never got the ball from Barry when he ran down the line.
RND - 2 - Poor and gave a really bad one away but he's been thrown in there when he shouldn't be playing L2 football.
Bindon - 4 - He must wonder what he's signed up to. He kept trying but needs a dominant CB next to him.
Seriki - 4 - I thought his first touch was poor all game. he kept making runs but didn't really pay off. Made a couple of great defensive blocks but his positioning and marking/tracking was poor.
Hamer - 3- Poor tackle for the freekick. The issue is with him in that position is that he doesn't track or mark players. He's too lazy/doesn't care. He did some good things on the ball but was also really wasteful. He needs to play further forward. Argued with the ref a lot.
Peck - 3 - Like a headless chicken at times. Gives the ball away. wanders off up the pitch leaving a massive gap behind him. Poor marking/tracking.
O'Hare - 5.5 - Did great for the first goal and looked out most dangerous player for the first 35 minutes. He seemed to then make more and more errors. Another who needs to play further forward. Doesn't cover well at all.
Barry - 4 - Had lots of shots. Likes to hog the ball. Made poor decision far too often. Looks a talented lad but you can't be a ball hog at this level.
Campbell - 5 - Great finish and made some really good runs. He also seemed to drift out of the game and doesn't do enough.
Brooks - 3 - Looked poor today. made a couple of good runs but his head is always down. Never looks up.

Subs:

Robbo - 4 - We were slightly less shit with him on the pitch.
Cannon - 4 - Looked lively. At least he was putting some effort in in both directions
One - 4 - Flattered to deceive. Gets in good positions then runs into trouble
McCallum - 2 - I mean, he was at least putting some energy in

Selles - 0 - Started quite well but the same weaknesses were there in pre-season and yet he changed nothing to combat them. He really needs to sort that out. If he's playing 4:3:3 then the 3 in midfield HAVE to be able to do defensive work. We could have had the best 4 defenders in the world today and we would still have lost. He gets 0 because that flaw was so obvious to anyone who watched us in pre-season.

Bristol City - Impressed with them. They were very clinical but their manager set them up perfectly and they played really well in the system. They had 7 players out as well. They're going to have a good season based on this

We lost 5-2 home to Everton in the 1st game of 54-5.
Other times we've conceded 4 or more in the first league game

1913-14 Tottenham H 1-4
1947-8 Charlton A 0-4
1977-78 Tottenham A 2-4
1982-83 Portsmouth A 1-4
2015-16 Gillingham A 0-4

Just a fluke. Hmmmm

We play Sunderland again in THAT match 7 times out of 10 we win. They fluked it.

Wilder had luck apparently to get us 92 points.

Selles is gonna need the second coming to get us to 52, mind you he'll be gone by Christmas when we are 14th

4-4 v Birmingham

I was at Cropredy Festival instead of at the Lane and when David Pegg of Fairport Convention read the football results out from the stage, my heart leapt at "Sheffield United 4...", only to plunge to the depths at "Birmingham City 4"

So we've raked in 20 mill in sales plus the parachute money - maybe we ought to spend. I thought the new owners had a bit more brass than penniless prince!

That was a hard watch but I’m sure we will get the defence sorted. Bindon is inexperienced and will improve.

I’m disappointed that we didn’t create anything in the second half; BC were miles than us and fully deserved their win.

Early days yet, let’s hope that the owners have got this right. Need to bounce back against Swansea!
