Harriott's miss

At first I didn't really think about their miss, just what Bruce grobelaar was doing in goal for us! What was Howard thinking? Complete rush of blood leaving an empty net. Harriot really, really blew it though.

thought jackson's booking was the turning point. it was as though they were thinking.. 'if johnny is carrying off like that then he thinks we could lose'

Had to work hard for their booking though didn't they?

Speaking of which - I'd have sent Baxter off without a second thought today. So at least the ref was balanced. :)

Actually Baxter won the ball before making contact with the player, not that that is the be all and end all, but I thought he was unlucky to be booked.

Fair dos - it just looked reckless and out of control from my angle.

I had to suck the turtle back in. When the ball came looping over Howard's head and their player was running in I thought oh fook. I was right behind the goal and high up and was sure Harriot was going to score. It was a bad miss. He was at full stretch, but it seemed harder to miss than score. To put it back across and wide was poor. He really ought to have scored and it was a huge let off for us.

That was the turning point, no doubt. It would have been a very different game had it gone in. We still might have won, but bear in mind that Charlton were having their best spell at that point and they had nullified out threat first half. The miss seemed to wake the fans up and everyone started to make noise. The players clearly knew it was a let off and stepped up the performance. Charlton were shell shocked from the 2 goals and it was a non contest afterwards. Football matches are often won and lost on fine margins and this was no different. No one will remember Harriot's miss in years to come (in fact most fans seemed to have forgot it after the match!?) and will recollect us beating Charlton convingly (which we did in the end). But it could have been different.

It was never a foul that lead to the chance. Their player fell over and at best it was as drop ball. Our defence fell asleep and let Tudgay in. Collins and Harris were knapping and what on earth was Howard doing?! It would have been a cheap goal to give away and also frustrating (with it not being a free kick) however we got lucky! I can only think that Harriot had seen Darren Bent's and Christiano Ronaldo's misses at BDTBL and wondered if he could better it!? ;)

They went for the draw straight after that miss, taking Church off was a mistake. They don't score goals at the best of times never mind taking there best striker off!
