[MATCH POSTPONED] Pitch inspection for Brentford match?

There was a rather brilliant thread on Bladesmad the other day originated by Curtis suggesting clubs should be fined for matches being cancelled due to rain. If you remember him you can probably guess that he wouldn't listen to people pointing out why covers wouldn't work (and some of them had experience as groundsmen)

Well you could either have 10 of those or just attach one side of one big sheet to the roof of John St stand via a few pullies and just lift up one side of it rather than the center. Its only raising a big plastic sheet it really cant be that hard engineering wise

It's the weight that would be a huge problem, also where are the drains for this water to run into? If it can't drain through the grass and soil how is it going to drain off the tarck at the side?

with the amount of rain falling and inspection at 1pm, what do you guys think the chances are it being on/off ? From previous experience? Our coaches set off at 13:30

I'm in the office 0.7 miles away from the Lane, with the way the pitch looked yesterday and the way it's currently raining, I'd be very surprised if it's on.

Cheers Foxy. Due to rain the rest of the day isn't it ?

I'd hazard a guess you'll get an answer from the pitch inspection before your coaches set off.

The john street roof is a cantilever roof, designed to hold its own weight up plus I would imagine the weight of rain water or snow

You start messing around with attaching a pitch sized 'tarp' off this stand and you've got forces pulling down off its roof which it wasn't designed for!

Plus, to get things like a tarp connected up and pulled up you'd need lifting gear like perhaps a crane which you probably couldn't get into the ground

Then you have the extra water to clear. I'm assuming the drains are already overworked so you've got an issue of where you send the water.

It would only be the weight of the thin plastic sheet which it cant be that hard to lift, say if we were on a fullsize pitch, thats around 100m X 75m so be about 7500m squared. Not sure how much 1m squared of plastic would weigh but Im sure it'd be less than 1/2kg so your looking at lifting somewhere between 3 - 4 tons which if you spread it out across about 10 pullies on the roof then that sounds like a piece of piss to lift. that could be on any roof I just used John St as an example. And that must be a massive overestimate using that weight. You could even erect several little pully stations instead of using the roof, much like those lights that are on there now, just some scaffolding and a pully, it wouldnt have to raise it that high

It wouldnt have to hold the weight of the snow/rain either as that would run off as soon as it landed.

You could then have a temp drain running the other side of the sheet that fed into a main drain outside into the sewer.

We used to cover stuff in our yard at work with large, very heavy tarpaulins measuring roughly 60 feet by 40 feet, and with lighter sheets for stuff that only needed covering for a few hours. The havoc caused by wind was immense. Now, imagine covering a football pitch with a huge sheet and then let the wind get under it. The fixings would soon be ripped out.

Sheeting light enough to not damage the roof of the stand would need to be very thin, like a bed sheet, and so wouldn't stand up to any prolonged strong wind.

In theory it's a decent idea, but wildly impractical in real life.

Hi beebee. Just been within 1 mile of Bramall Lane. It's pissing down, high winds forecast for later & if it goes ahead, I'll be amazed.

Like most of the things I come up with :)

Didnt think about the wind, maybe we could slant the pitch like that one near Graves Park

Surely the answer is dead simple.

Simply attach clingfilm in strips attached to the JS and CS stands. Pull tight and the rain would simply bounce off and end up in the car park or on John Street. Make sure you buy the good stuff though because that Saver brand nonesense from Morrisons won't even do a mixing bowl without getting your finger/thumb through it.

Wibble.

...do you guys think it will be called off at 1pm or is it not that bad right now but later after more rain will see it off ?

If what is hitting Birmingham right now is heading North, there is more chance of Shergar winning this years Grand National than the game being on...

Unless we can quickly implement Grecian2000 clingfilm plan of course...

I'd imagine they'll bear in mind how far you guys are travelling and knock it on the head early (if that's what they plan to do).

Still pissing down in S1.

After the 10 am inspection the pitch was playable, let's hope the 1pm is the same, despite the rain which is coming down.

Got to say, of all the teams in the division, Brentford is the game I look forward to as they play attacking football and make a proper game of it. Dunno if that's changed since Rosler left or if the pitch will affect it tonight (if were on)

See video below starting from 0.36 and that will be the same for the ref inspecting our pitch at 1pm!

Much more attacking than under Rosler.

Hi beebee. Any time now! Unfortunately, the wind has whipped up & still extremely doubtful.

Whatever, have a good day. A proper football fan! (Like us Blades).

'Silin' Know what you mean BOS, but what are the origins of this fascinating northern word?

From
Yorkshire Dialect Words of Old Norse Origin at http://www.viking.no/e/england/yorkshire_norse.htm#S
sile, silingto rain heavily, as in "It's siling down"?cf Norwegian dialect sila. Also Norwegian and Swedish sila (strain, filter). There is a suggestion here of liquid running quickly through a strainer or filter.
