Last night at the Barnsley match, the Blade who was next to me tapped on my shoulder and said "I was next to you at Norwich last Saturday!".

What were the odds of this if the Blade is someone you have not met before? 1 in 5,000?

He probs has photos of you plastered all over some dingy basement wall, mostly in back & white, some of you looking wistful others where you are tugging self consciously at a stray strand of hair....

That isn't my basement, by the way. 😉

Depends i’ve sat next to the same bloke at almost all away games. Come to think of it it’s the same for home games….

Presume you’re in the same loyalty points bracket so the odds probably come in a fair bit

None of the answers are quite right. Two people (not one) were presumably sat next to Silent at Norwich.

For each person, assuming that everyone at Norwich also went to Barnsley, the odds are 2 / 4,999 that they would be sat in one of the seats either side of Silent Blade. So, the chance of at least one person being sat next to Silent at both games are 4 / 4,999 = 0.0008 or 0.08%. If you prefer odd, 1,995 to 4.

In reality, it's more complex because we don't know how many people attended BOTH matches (if they were completely different sets of people apart from Silent, the chance would be zero, of course). It would also be made a bit more complex by seating arrangements, how they sell blocks of tickets, etc. For instance, if they tend to put 'single ticket' people together, the odds would increase / decrease accordingly.

Let's not open the can of worms again though.

I wish I'd payed more attention at school 🙁

So do I! ( in both English and maths ;))

I often see people that I recognise but I've never sat next the same person twice. However I did bump into someone at the Harrogate friendly (who I vaguely know from working days) and he told me he went to all of the away games - I go to most but I'm surprised I've never see him previously.

Real surprise will be when he moves in next door to you later this week. :)

Along similar lines, Jim Chimmerney sat next to us at a home game in the South Stand and then either the same season or the next, also sat next to us away at Bolton (won 3-0), neither was arranged, no idea what the chances are of that.

We knew each other, having met in about 2005 on the famous club trip to Malta, famous for getting cancelled at the last minute, and we were the two dozy sods who’d booked independently so went without the football anyway :)

Well if you insist on sitting in the dugout what do you expect.
That explains why we were crap, Wilder was worrying about seating arrangements and not the game...:tumbleweed:

The 4/4,999 isn't right. You halved twice.
The odds are 2/4,999 as you said in the first part, because of there being a seat each side.
I don't know why you've halved again?

What also defies lots of people's logic, is that the odds of it happening again are still 2/4,999 next match. Although it would seem 'impossible'

That's the probability not the odds

Really really funny
lol at that

Well done 👍

I’ve been sat next to the same woman for 37 years

If there were 2 people sat next to Silent at Norwich, the probability of either one of them sitting in a specific seat at Barnsley would be 2/4,999 (assuming Silent's seat is already taken). However, there are two seats next to Silent to pick from at Barnsley and so that approximately doubles the probability to 4/4,999.

Being pedantic, the numbers aren't quite as simple as Geordie Blade's calculation, even without allowing for the real life ticket arrangements etc (as you'd need to allow for both people from Norwich not being able to sit in the same seat at Barnsley, so there are only 4,998 available seats left for the second person). However, 4/4,999 is close enough without making the numbers any more complicated.

Doesn’t that assume everyone who went to Norwich also went to Barnsley?
