Eyup S2,

By way of a preview episode, Roygbiv and I did our usual look at the best case and worst case scenarios for the season ahead - what needs to go right, and what could go wrong, and what the impact is likely to be. We discuss the importance of Gus Hamer, the need for more reinforcements, whether Wilder has rediscovering his mojo, whether Brooks or another youngster can step up, and plenty more. Also the Souttar signing and a few words on Preston. Cheers for listening, happy new season (hopefully)!

Just got it on - Roy is sounding very robotic in these early stages. Has he been taken over by AI?

As ever, a decent listen and thanks for keeping it going.

Good pod.

The frustrating thing about making pre-season predictions is that the team we have now will not be the team we have after the window closes. I think it's a good bet that one or more of Anel, Souza and Hamer will go, and conversely we will surely be getting in a better goalkeeper, and if we don't sign more forwards we are being negligent.

At present I lean towards missing the playoffs as I think we are too thin and injuries will scupper a promotion charge, and I do not see where enough goals will come from, but who knows where we will be in 3 weeks.

Can anyone confirm if Hamer still has the release clause in his contract? I thought I’d read that it had expired.
I would have hoped the club would now reject any bids for players in this window after we sold Osula, however I realise this is Sheffield Utd and that’s not how we roll.

Yes the release clause in Hamers contract has now expired - it was for if we were relegated and had to be done 3 weeks before the end of the first transfer window ....... which we are now past ! Thank god although it doesnt stop anyone making an offer but why would they do it now hen they could have got him cheapere ?

Hello, sorry for the delay, on holiday this week! New episode out now, here's the link :)

Don’t fully get the Brooks decision making point. Totally ignored the fact he got an assist and was involved in the second goal.

We’ll do well if he continues to be ‘uncertain’ in his decision making, if he can create two goals a game.

First goal he does really well! Ends up pulling three defenders towards him and that opens up the space for Arblaster. "Involvement" in the second goal is a bit of a stretch though IMO, unless he hypnotized the keeper into throwing it straight to Hamer after the weak shot.

I thought he did very well overall in case I didn't get that across clearly, just that he got the ball in those spots about 8-9 times it felt like and often delayed or drove into a blind alley. He'll get there, I just thought he looked like what he is at times - a player still starting out in his career. The attack that leads to the second goal is kind of what I mean, he starts with the ball in loads of space (which is credit to him) but it ends up being a shot from the edge of the box through bodies rather than a proper chance.

I don’t think it’s a stretch, he makes the run upfield to then get the shot off (which was deflected). If he’d not done that then Hamer wouldn’t have received the ball to have scored, would he?

He also set up our next best chance, which Moore missed from 5 yards out.

Agreed he’s not the finished article yet, but it seems the young players often get overly criticised for things not coming off, compared with senior players. And their contributions downplayed, compared to those of the senior players.

Thanks for your patience :D Pod is out now. Talked about that brilliant first half, the sleepy second and weird passivity from Wilder / the players, a bit about Barnsley in the cup and also another impressive showing from the U21s. Cheers for listening!
