Not a fan of this signing if it happens. He always seemed slow. Great at heading at set pieces but that surely is not only why you sign a CB.

He's actually a pretty good player, but not one I'd like to see in a back 4 with full backs that aren't great defensively.
I think that would expose his lack of agility.

He isn't super-slow and would probably be very good in a back 3. Also think Burrows and Hoever would suit wing back role better.

His “representatives” vetoed the loan in January. Might do same again, no matter how good or bad he is do we want another reluctant team player?

Can understand the lads representatives vetoing the deal for a loan in January.

As a football side then we were a lost cause, some players had given up, and it was looking ugly most games with high defeats and a potentially toxic atmosphere from the fans. Not an ideal environment for you to put the lad if you was his agent. I also probably would have advised him to sit tight until tbr summer and see what is out there then. We are a totally different proposition now that we are into a major rebuild and expected to go relatively well this season. I can understand the lad and his agent being very interested now but absolutely not in January.

BBD was happy enough as he knew it would put him in the shop window, Holgate was not too bothered either way as he wasn't getting in the side at Championship (at the time) Southampton.

Only just discovered this section of the board, I thought you lot were remarkably quiet on transfer window stuff 😅

Can only say I think the analyses of Souttar here are well wide of the mark and seem to be based largely on the fact that he's a big bastard. But he doesn't really fit the archetype of a big ugly CB - here's what I put on the General board:

Souttar pros: good on the ball, can play out and ping passes, excellent in the middle of a 3 (which I think you play?)
Souttar cons: a bit lumbering on the turn, susceptible to a ball over the top, doesn't look comfortable in a four (which we play)

Overall upper end Champo defender, could do a lot worse.

So while there is truth in him being a bit cumbersome (simply by nature of his giant frame), he's far from slow, in fact at full pelt I'd say he's very quick - he's often able to get others (or himself) out of jail by chasing across and covering. He's also good with the ball, well capable of stepping out and marauding through the midfield to set up attacks, and has a good raking long pass on him too.

I would say it depends very much on the system you play though. As a pair and/or in a high line his weaknesses get more exposed, but in the middle of a 3 he's proper classy.

We seem to be finally moving away from a 3 (which we’ve played for about 8 years) and to a 2, although I do think if we start poorly it won’t take long until we go back to what we know.

I agree with you that Souttar is better with the ball than he’s given credit for, and he isn’t a “big orrible CB”, but I don’t actually think we’re in for him at this point.

were not playing 3 at the back

We need a big nasty bastard at the back. One who can do the dark arts well.
worralls not as big as souttar but he can be a nasty bastard if were going 4 at the back him and anel for me if 3 get worrall and souttar in with anel robbo and trusty can be back up

He would be good cover for Anel. Unless he can play left side.

Got a feeling this is already done, Watched the interview with Wilder on BBC radio Sheff twitter and in the background there was an absolute giant of a bloke at 25 mins 30 secondsish and media team was taking pics too in background
