Totally agree re recouping, not sure we will get 15m plus though. On paper he looks the part, physique, tackling stats, nationality and CV (La Liga and PL regular). Let's hope the only film they watch is of the Luton game !
It would be interesting to know how he performed when we scouted him. There is a player in there and at times I think we played him wrong, but he didn't help himself with a terrible attitude and laziness. Needs a strong preseason to get his fitness and speed levels up to Premier League standard. The best thing he could do would be to pick a league in Europe which is slower and less physical, because whilst he could physically compete over individual games, he couldn't do it for the entire season.

There was a period before Christmas before we got rid of Hecky where he was putting in decent performances and we we're getting hammered, it looked like there was a player in there. But that didn't last and the poor attitude took over.

Can we get £10M plus in todays market? Not sure we can. I don't think that there is the money there anymore as sides are reluctant to spend big on bench warmers in case they breach FFP and lose points.

The FFP point is a good one.....as illustrated by Newcastle signing Kelly on a free and giving him a 5 year contract. I'm sure their fans didn't envisage that kind of transfer when the Saudis bought them!

Kelly's a highly rated defender.

Im not saying he isnt but he was booed by his own supporters last season, dropped at times and not close to being an International. I don't think he's the type of signing the Geordies would be making if it wasn't for FFP
Wasn't that just during an FA Cup upset? Not sure it was particularly him. He was their captain, highly rated when he went there and has done well overall.

Newcastle probably going to pay him £100k+ a week, with England caps likely in the next few years.

I know what you mean though - you're saying they'd expect to sign some "worldie" Italy/Argentina CBs.

Exactly and I gues that is why these rules have been brought in...to reduce transfer fees and the risk of clubs going bust. However it's ironic that it's stopping Suadi money coming into the game.

What is really difficult to understand though is why a club like Villa who have made the champions league and are about to see a big jump in revenue look like being forced to sell Ruiz and Cash to make sure they don't break the rules !! Thereby making sure they have no chance in the CL and will finish lower in the PL!!

I think half the reason he's signed for Newcastle is because he played under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth, so Howe is convinced he can get the best out of him again. It's not unusual to see managers sign players from their former teams. Look at Warnock with Paddy Kenny, Adkins with Billy Sharp, Clough turning us into a hybrid Derby/Burton.

Burby? Or Derton?

Was really excited probably like many to be signing a Brazilian. Bit of a premature ejaculation. Like getting a Saudi owner what isn't super rich. Not knocking the Prince mind you.

It's just overshadowed by his lack of effort, athleticism, and lack of application. I do kinda get it, when you're getting tonked every week, but I don't agree with it.

In those circumstances you find out who has the heart for it, who will keep showing up week in, week out.

Once palhinha leaves Fulham for Bayern Munich, I can see souza going to Fulham. His tackling/interception/duals stats are very comparable on paper. I actually think he'll do alright in a better team with better players where his job is just to break up play and pass 5/10 yards. Just not for us.

Playing Souza as a box to box midfielder (RCM) wasn't a good idea.
