I don’t think anyone is saying that. On his day, Berge was a class apart and second only to Ndiaye in terms of quality, and comfortably ahead of anyone else. The way he’d waltz past defenders was exceptional.
But there was just a weird thing where he only seemed to be able to occasionally switch it on. And if he didn’t switch it on, what was left was a player who mostly jogged around the pitch, often lost 50/50s and played effectively scared football by continually passing sideways or backwards. I appreciate you can’t go past defenders every time but there was a weird contrast with Berge where he was either contributing massively or contributing very little at all. I have to say watching him jog around for Burnley contributing very little in their game against Man City made me realise I’m not sure I’ll miss him a great deal. Man City are obviously a pretty exceptional team, but we also need to recognise that Berge was inconsistent even while up against Champ teams.
If Hamer can bring and maintain a high level of willingness to carry the ball, make positive passes and put pressure on the opposition off the ball to the standards he’s already starting showing then he’s a clear upgrade on Berge. This is not suddenly deciding Berge is shit either.
