They may take it if it involves us paying them £35 million.

At £18 million we should walk away and look at other options.
Because Archer is 21. The hope for United is twofold, firstly that whoever we sign is a 10 goal PL striker and secondly that they have the potential to be sold for well above what we paid. Akpom may have met the first element of that but at 27 (28 in October) he's not going to fulfil the second. Not sure why we would pull out of a 12m deal for Akpom if its too much, only then to spend 18m+ on Archer.
August 16th is a bizarre day for a release clause to expire. Where did you hear that? Also re Che Adams, his release clause expired yesterday, so its pretty dumb to then bid for him....
Yeah I was impressed with him last year.He so is worth £18m - he is a super player , just what we need and need urgently

....and our revised bid is still £8m .......We can play hardball too...Yes but then you compromise somewhere in the middle. We start low and stay low.
Re-sale value. Archer would be 24 nearing the end of his contract with us Akpom would be nearly 32 so we would hopefully get a far bigger future resale for Archer therefore recouping the spend. Not sure why we would pull out of a 12m deal for Akpom if its too much, only then to spend 18m+ on Archer.

Time is a factor though, surely. Do we keep lowballing right up to the end of the window to get the best price, by which time our 4th, 5th and 6th choice strikers have possibly gone elsewhere? What if an established team steps in later in the window and buys him as a squad player cos all of their other targets have gone? The market is what someone is willing to pay for him.
We’re bidding against Luton and maybe some Championship clubs, that should tell you that Archer ain’t worth what Villa are asking. That’s part of signing a player, knowing who else is interested and adapting your buying strategy to suit.
Can't beat a good gifLiking you George - welcome aboard the fkin crazy bus

If paying that for McBurnie is the reasoning then get the fuck out of there and quickly. We paid that for mcburnie years ago. It’s the going rate
It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. July 31st makes sense, as would a deadline set before the start of the season, or one tied to the end transfer window. Not one which expires on a Wednesday in the second week of the season. It’ll be to give the club time to find a replacement. Makes perfect sense it ending on the 16th
Problem is you are not only assuming what Akpom relegation clause would be, you are also assuming that whatever targets we have next up to look at, also won’t have similarWe could easily afford 12 million for Akpom.
However the transfer fee is only half the equation.
The rest of the equation, which many of out fans never really consider is the salary
but more importantly the "relegation clause" and length of contract.
Common sense says any promoted club has a good chance of instant relegation, so when we're negotiating salaries.
It's not the set salary that matters, most players are looking at the drop in wage figure if and when we're relegated.
No way can we afford a no relegation clause, it's obvious really because it could lead to probably FFP issues, with points deductions and possibly admin.
Also if you accept the reports that he was given a 5 year contract, then basically Akpom has secured his future.
There's no way we would commit ourselves to such a lengthy commitment.
Imagine if we're relegated and a new owner comes in.
He'll think who ever gave Akpom a massive contract with no relegation clause was total madness.
Especially if he's ordinary again this season, all Blades would be saying "you only have to look at Wikipedia to see he's a one season wonder, Bettis out".

Lets say we do get him at the end of the window. We save a few million quid but we're already 6 points adrift at the foot of the table by then, and at that point Archer ain't even trained with us!
I'll say it again - we're fucking about!
That’s what parachute payments are for aren’t they? To pay off high contracts if religated not to buy more players. If your employer hits a rough patch and says sales are down so I’m cutting everyone’s wages but bringing in more people you’d rightly kick off.No way can we afford a no relegation clause,
Archer + no Doyle ....no issue imoWhat if the choice is £14m for Archer and we can also afford to sign Doyle or it’s £18m and no Doyle?
We’ve got a limited budget, we need to use it wisely. Making panicked, desperate signings is crazy and we’ll regret it in the long run.
Stick to our valuation and if we get the player then great, if he goes elsewhere then so be it.
This is giving a whole new meaning to ---dragging on .....Sounds like this one is gonna drag on. Hecky alluded to that during the press conference.
With the players we've brought into midfield, you'd think Doyle is now a luxury we can't afford so doesn't really come into it.What if the choice is £14m for Archer and we can also afford to sign Doyle or it’s £18m and no Doyle?

I do get your point, but we seem to be juggling plates and sometimes when you do that you just end up with a load of smashed plates! It's a dangerous game which could lead to the well worn phrase being wheeled out again, "we tried....."What if the choice is £14m for Archer and we can also afford to sign Doyle or it’s £18m and no Doyle?

Had to be registered by noon today I think. So am I safe in saying that Archer won't be playing for us tomorrow neet?
