CONFIRMED Berge to Burnley

It's the timing that's the real pisser here. I can see a lot of the arguments that we can use the money from Ndiaye and Berge sales to strengthen the squad but we'd have been far better off doing so at the beginning of the window. We're in a position now where we're 5 days out from the season and we have lost our best player and may potentially be about to lose our next best as well. If any money is to be reinvested, it needs to be done quickly and to clubs who will clearly have an understanding of our desperation.

Hecky made a huge point of how important these opening games of the season are with 4 out of the first 6 at home. The fact that we're going into the first game of the season much weaker than we were at the end of last season is really amateurish from those at the top of the club.

Of course, Burnley making a move is by no means a done deal. It needs to meet our valuation and also Berge needs to agree personal terms. Reading between the lines of the Prince's interview on SU Way, it suggests to me that we are open to selling. Yes we can reinvest but leaving it this late could be so damaging for the rest of the season. We saw in our relegation season how pivotal a bad start can be, the last thing we need this time round is for confidence to take a battering so early on into the season.
Confidence is already fucked if you’ve seen the body language v Stuttgart

I think you are misreading my post. I am NITK.
No I am saying what you have posted is what I have been told that he has been backed into a corner and told he either goes or he doesn't play again

What the hell was the point in keeping both N’diaye and Berge just to get rid once we’re promoted. No matter how you spin it they’re a number of bizarre decisions which have been made and this one tops it for me.
To get us promoted and save the club from a realistic prospect of administration
Then , having saved us from going out of business , cash in for $30m to swap them for players on 3 or 4 year contracts to save us from the next disaster , the contracts cliff edge in summer 2024.
Our entire mission statement is to avoid disaster in whatever form it presents itself
Next comes the feckin white elephant hotel …

Why do we never just make a stance and put a ridiculous value on our players? 28 million and you can have him, except we give clubs deals which seem to just fuck us over.
Did it with Ramsdale and got our price. He was always going to go but his long contract meant we called the shots.

That's the not the case with Berge. He was going for free in 10 months' time.

Ignoring these facts at this stage is just wilful.

Why does Berge want to move to a club, where he also has a decent chance of ending back in the Championship tied to a long term contract. Surely his whole logic of not signing a contract with us, is that he can have a greater range of options next season and potentially up his value in terms of wages significantly. If this happens, I will cry a little for the futility of life...
Maybe cause he’s a lazy player and sees an easy option to draw a wage we’re not willing to pay. Clearly lacks ambishun if he goes there

If we had a better chance of staying up with Berge/Ndiaye and then lose them for free next season then so be it. We’ve used promotion money to balance the books. Just seems the board are already resigned to the fact we are going down. After all the talk last season saying Berge wants to stay surely PH is pissed off he’s leaving.

Osborn and Norwood two our first choice midfielders as of today if Berge goes. Just let that sink in.
Please don't .. the reality is the current squad minus Iliman and Sander would be relegated in the championship. We are so tin pot it stinks no contingencies just last minute Aldi panic buys FFS and we mock other fans ... UTB

It's true!!! But not just because it looks like Sander is leaving. I'm crying because yet again all blades fans have been well and truly fucked over by the management. I remember the Fjortoft and Deane disaster and thought we could never again plumb those depths but here we are again. Promoted to the so-called promised land, guaranteed £140 million and yet we sell our best and only creative players. As stated elsewhere.....we are a laughing stock. I don't think I've ever looked forward to a new season less than I am this one. 2 weeks ago I was optimistic about our chances, but the board has totally changed this.......sad days.

When you think about it guessing it's gone a bit like this:

  • Club- Sander we've been promoted can we get you on a new deal?
  • Sander- What are you offering?
  • Club- Bit more wage than currently but not much more, but deffo need a good wage reduction clause.
  • Meanwhile club offer N'Diaye biggest contract package we've ever done. It fails unfortunately. But of course players are aware.
  • Club- how about that contract then?
  • Sander- well my agent thinks Im worth bit more and can get more elsewhere can you increase it?
  • Club- No. Will you sign this offer?
  • Sander- No, happy to see out my deal though.
  • Club- Wed rather sell you now than for free. Burnley have matched bid big enough off you go....

I'm in the jury's out camp - if come the end of the transfer window and we've only sold players then something very dodgy is going on 😠

Ah yes, Sheffield Wednesday who checks notes let all their big money signings since 2015 leave for free and who are now hoping their fans buy 10 year season tickets cash in hand, no refunds.

I was all for getting O'Brien in as an affordable upgrade to wee Jimmy, but if any blades think that Akpom and O'Brien are going to suitably replace Sander and Illy then I suggest that football is not the game for you. I genuinely feel for the likes of Furious, Egan, Norwood, Wes, Anel and JLT who put in some great performances last season and deserve a decent crack at the EPL. Unfortunately the club is waving the white flag and quite how Hecky is expected to raise morale in order to make us competitive, I don't know.

Who says we're spending fuck all? We're spending whatever we recoup plus whatever we had already.

Maybe it's time to stop getting angry at things you've made up.
Haha okay, so you think we’re going to spend Ndiaye, Berge and the 20 million budget money that was rumoured before the transfer window shuts. You do realise this is Sheffield United? Don’t see how any blade can be optimistic about what’s happened in the past couple of weeks. Maybe try and stop going against the grain to be argumentative. It is okay to be angry about what’s happening, people have spent money on season tickets for us to get spanked with a depleted squad. It’s fucking outrageous. If we do spend that money I will happily apologise.

You’re better off listening to what Baltic and Andy67 have to say than believing what they’ve written above. It’s like a football finance lesson written by special people.

Just on this point, if we get a combined £25-30m for the two sales, plus the original budget, I gather we'll have somewhere in the region of c£50m or thereabouts?

Personally I don't think we'll get near that and we'll probably spend another £20m or so on top of the £10-12m we've spent already?

Should have 41m to still spend 🤷🫣

If we end the transfer window with a weaker team than last season (probably) and net transfer fee incomings after getting the PL windfall no amount of interviews with Hal and Nick is going to stop the club becoming toxic very quickly.

even if we do replace the midfield it’s going to take a while to get 2/3 brand new midfielders to understand there roles and the other players around them. I mean I’m still trying to work out Ben osborn and it’s nearly been 4 bastard years
Osborn is an emergency LB at best

This Burnley fan is in for a disappointment when he first sees Berge head a ball.

This Burnley fan is in for a disappointment when he first sees Berge head a ball.

Amazing how his 6'5 frame creates such an illusion.

He is very strong on the ball, great dribbler, holds possession well. I think he'll do really well in that Burnley side and is a steal at £12m.

Understand us selling, I always thought it was the right thing to do in Berge's case but I didn't expect us to lose Ndiaye.

It's left a big void because we now have zero line breakers, whereas last season we had 3 (inc. McAtee). Without those types of players PL defences swallow you up, similar to the season we went down.
We won't be a fun side to watch next season without those 3, or adequate replacements.
