Agree...whilst recognising his ability I'm normally frustrated and quite critical
but no complaints from me today.....this is more like it and how he should play most games.
 
I have no fucking idea why any of this should be a surprise to anyone.

We bought him as a deep lying playmaker.

He has played that role for his country (for the most part).

He 100% played this role for the club from which we signed him.

Circumstances dictated that we tried to shoehorn him into a role with us that was, for the most part, alien to him.

To adapt to a new role in a different country was always going to result in indifferent performances. The injuries have not helped with this either.

He has done well. Not brilliant. Well.

He is perhaps the only Wilder PL signing that could be regarded as a success and for sure the only one that has, broadly speaking, retained his commercial value.

I think he felt (and was probably told) YOU’VE got responsibility now. There’s two young loanees in midfield with you and you need to carry the ball, you need to show for it and take some of the heat off Doyle if they pressure him, you need to be winning tackles and making the forward passes into Ndiaye.
I think he defers to Norwood (who’s more experienced and often captain) and generally defers to other players too often. It looked to me like he genuinely felt it was HIS responsibility today.

Exactly right. Sort of the opposite to Oli who makes everything look hard work, and therefore gets the plaudits [and that's not slagging McB off].

He was better than good, he was excellent today. The only issue I have with that, is that he's now set a benchmark, so he's got no excuses for not putting in 9 more games at that level.

He does that, I'll happily eat humble pie!

He is a very very good player who has had to learn a new position imo

We signed him as Norwood and have barely played him in that role

I think berge wants the ball all the time to control everything but that’s what Norwood does so they get in each others way

Example today where berge looked great as he had the ball all the time instead of Norwood getting in the same position IMO

I saw surprising flashes of aggression and grit today from Sander. He is a fabulous, composed footballer, but often too safe and passive for the way Sheff Utd play. If he can get fired up like this for the rest of the league season, could still play a pivotal role in the run-in.
 
Funny how he gets an assist for that.

Simple sideways pass 30 yards from goal and Doyle bangs it in the top corner.

Mom. Lowe also surprisingly in with a shout mainly due to an excellent defensive performance. Doyle scored a screamer and overall played well but he also played a big part in their second and the big chance they had to kill it when they hit the post. If that was Norwood or God forbid Berge missing those tackles...

There was a lack of movement up top again today. The only one of Oli, Ndiaye and Mcatee to run in behind was Mcatee who made a number of excellent third man runs. You can't blame Berge for retaining the ball when there's no movement in front of him. The choice then is lump it, pass backwards or sideways or drive with it it ( especially if playing higher). The amount of times he's looking for a forward option, had none and had to take extra touches is frustrating and has been a recurring theme for months tbh.

I thought Lowe played well apart from giving it away for their second goal.
 
berge looked so much better yesterday playing alongside tommy doyle the problem weve got with norwood is that he plays far too deep no need for him to be taking the ball off our centre backs doyle plays higher up the pitch giving us an extra body in there plus far more energy than norwood im afraid the norwood/fleck midfield combo days are long gone their both only useful now from the bench if were protecting a lead and for what its worth i would give coulibally a start in the semi with city
 
He was great - I also noticed at 2-1 down he was one of the main lads urging his team to keep their heads up (along with Ndiaye) - for a bloke who 'doesn't look like he wants to be here' he looked very much like it meant something today
 
Berge's positioning for both goals last night was abysmal. He wasn't the main culprit for either goal, but footballs a team game, and you've got to be alert for the second ball. He was neither use nor ornament for either goal.

I don't understand why he jumped allowing the ball under where his legs could have been had he stood there.

Agreed, there was something a bit neshy about the way he leapt into the air and went to turn his back for one of the goals. I thought they were trained to stay on the ground in the situation and raise a boot to try and block or something
