Over The Hills... Obviously
Just been reading comments from Gordon Greer down at BHA regarding Khadra's flopped loan move with us in the first half of the season. He is the loan manager down there these days, which is somewhat of a new titles to me... they now employ someone just to oversee loan movements in the top flight. Madness!!

But anyways....

Greer adresses the key reason behind Khadra's 'tough spell' at BDTBL and it is quite a simple of really.

He said: “Reda [Khadra] had a really tough first half of the season with Sheffield United – it didn’t work out for anyone as they didn’t play with wingers, so he was playing out of position as a wing-back or a forward.

We knew this before we signed him and let's face it, Hecky has a huge reluctance to move away from the inherited formation and style of play. Khadra on the other hand has been developed to play as a winger and as stated above, he's not a wing back or a forward.

Soooo who made the mistake with this one?

Was it merely an 11th hour desperate signing??

It seems we signed a play who was completely unsuited to our own system, style of play etc.... okay granted, he had a good fame against us prior to joining us. But one swallow doesn't make a spring does it?? Did we do the correct scouting and due diligence on the lad??

Did Hecky bring him in with the view to changing the system around a bit if required??... I very much doubt it personally.

Suppose we simply have to admit that we got this one wrong regardless of whom was behind the failures....

We used him as and when we pleased. Not good for the player, but fine for us.

We don't play wingers (so why did I start the Khadra suggestion thread?!).

There was the option to play him behind the strikers. Although we seemed to want to play him as a wing back.

We have done it a few times with signing players who are really wingers.

I think what we are really after is pace to bring on for the last 20 minutes when the opposition defence is tiring and on yellows. Strikers tend to be expensive though and the pacey ones usually are starting somewhere so we end up with a second string winger as that is what is in budget.

Obviously wasn't a desperate 11th hour signing, we were publicly chasing him for weeks

Hecky must have had a lack of clarity over how he'd use him. Then sucked all the early form and enthusiasm out of him by often inexplicably ignoring him - Boro away is memorable

And then there's Khadra himself. Maybe lacked the mental strength and apparently got too fat as well

I think his signing was both a slightly desperate move and also an attempt to have something different on the bench.

He didn't play because we were 9 points clear in second and the players who were playing put us there.

Let's be honest, if Ndiaye hadn't had a stormer he'd have played off a striker, which he has done before.

The tactical switch is to a back four and a diamond in midfield if we are trying to regain a lead or come back from a deficit. You’d probably look to deploy Khadra in this formation / situation I guess.

However when we had Khadra we were beating everyone so never really needed to make the change. Thus he got the odd cameo out of position.

Thought he fitted the mold Of impact sub very well. If he does nothing else but win those 3 points at Swansea then he's done exponentially more than a vast number of our loans over recent years!!
Don’t worry, he’ll negate those 3 points by scoring the winner against us for Birmingham

I think the thinking was to play him just behind strikers. Which we did alot of the time when he played.
When he did play wing back wasn't it due to our wing back injury crisis'?

His best moment for us was running through the middle to score at Swansea. Worst moments were when he tried to go down the wing and put a decent cross in 🤷‍♂️

The lad obviously needs regular game time for his development but I don't think he was good enough to be given priority over our own youth prospects like jebbo ,osula and definitely not ndiaye

Since Wilder, and looking at the many acquisitions made (some at cost, some not) can you honestly say we have done well targeting players to fit the 5-3-2 system we play?

I can't. I think most of them struggle like fuck in defence, midfield and attack and overall we have wasted millions on duds.

Think it just depends on the quality of the player

To be fair though, it’s worked overall. Such are the rewards for a season in the PL, it doesn’t matter if you waste a bit on the way.

Assuming we go up. If we don’t we are fucked.

You'd have to say that Anel looks like a very good fit, but agreed.

It does. People may disagree, but here's My Take ...

Overall I think we are still in the red regarding value for money and our league position and recent history bears witness to this. Occasional bright spots, Anel, Didsy, MGW. NDaiye, Henderson are offset by a supertanker full of fucked up, unplayed and wasted cash options, moreso in our supposed beknighted Wilder years. With hindsight we could have done so much better.

As said, please respectfully disagree and if you can, show your working out to qualify that. Don't be a cunt with the 'you just watch it on the telly' shit.

Conor Hourihane - classic example of 'put him in a red and white shirt to make him bobbar' player. Parallel with a then-poor Norwood to make our midfield look very, very weak. VFM 2/10
Morgan Gibbs-White - arrived with great capability and left us yearning for his stellar quality. A simply brilliant threat and good footballer. VFM 10/10
Robin Olsen - Swedish international and that's about it. Looked very out of place and poor in a United shirt. VFM 1/10
Charlie Goode - another failed attempt to plug the leaky backline. VFM 1/10
Filip Uremovic - who? yeah, I know he was here, because we were all crying out to see him. But we didn't. VFM 1/10

2022-23

Permanents

Anel Ahmedhodzic - UNDISC - Massive heart, big personality and (at times) great skill and vision. Scores goals and defends really well. VFM 10/10

Loans

Tommy Doyle - taken time to bring him in and exploit what seems to be Michael Brown screaming to get out. Booted in a screamer last week and shows us the Premier League quality his parent club says he has VFM 6/10
Ciaran Clark - been injured and has in my opinion only limited capability to cover the still up-for-grabs JOC role when Robinson not available. VFM 4/10
James McAtee - another one taken time to impose and shows flashes of real skill. VFM 6/10
Rea Khara - brought in as a winger/attacker. So how does that work with a 5-3-2. decent player ... but only as a winger/attacker/ Wasted opportunity and not his foault. VFM 2/10

Conclusion

Overall I think we are still in the red regarding value for money and our league position and recent history bears witness to this. Occasional bright spots, Anel, Didsy, MGW. NDaiye, Henderson are offset by a supertanker full of fucked up, unplayed and wasted cash options, moreso in our supposed beknighted Wilder years. With hindsight we could have done so much better.

As said, please respectfully disagree and if you can, show your working out to qualify that. Don't be a cunt with the 'you just watch it on the telly' shit.

Incredibly harsh on Stevens (a player who's admittedly been done for 2 years). He gets in at left back in my best ever Unitedteam and played 95%+ of minutes available for 3 years and was probably our best player in the first half of the PL.season. 9/10

Easily the best left back /left wing back since I started watching the Blades in 1970
