At the risk of being a tad facetious I think there needs to be a consistent approach…

If we are a nation in mourning then I should be mourning, not going to work and busying myself with my other responsibilities and obligations.

Alternatively we are a nation getting on with it whilst paying our respects to a much loved (by many) monarch. In which case we should all be going about our day to day lives and that includes watching sport.

But what purpose will it serve, regardless of how long she has been on the throne?

Should we all stop going about our business for 12 days (or whatever it is) ? We will still have to go to work, shop etc. Is loud music to be banned too?

It's just so silly.

I'm merely stating that traditionially there's a set procedure for a deceased monarchs state funeral..

If that does involve postponement of sporting events, then that's what'll happen..

There are times to be a smart arse and times to hold your counsel. All down to how classy you are……. Today is a highly significant one
Aye, you’re right
Betty Empire would be appalled by this & my unwillingness to suspend breathing @ her passing

Surprised you’re (trolling) on something as superficial as kick ball website

Would the Royal Family really be bothered if Sheffield United v Rotherham was to go ahead? Would they for any fixture?

I’m sure they’re too upset and have other things to be doing than being bothered by it.

If people want to mourn then they can, if they don’t then they shouldn’t be stopped to do what they enjoy either.

Seems a bit arbitary to postpone sports events if cinemas, night clubs, concert venues etc can remain open.

Saying that, if we had to have a match postponed, now is a good time.

If I can get some proof that she was a shape shifting lizard today, do you think they might let the games go ahead?

I get the point, but it will be a respect decision more than whether someone cares about football or not.

I don’t think it should be cancelled, but it’s a tricky situation for the EFL & it’s probably easier for them to cancel the fixtures

I’m expecting it to be off. We could do with all 3 being off & getting some players back after the international break 😖

It's probably easier for the EFL to let the fixtures go ahead. Saves dealing with fixture re-arrangements, and complaints from managers and fans who have booked hotels and train tickets. I doubt it will be seen as a huge national outrage if people play football two days after the Queen dies.

"The English Football League has also postponed its two games on Friday."

"A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend's scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance, in addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning," said an EFL statement.

but its ok Formula 1 is still going ahead this weekend so we have some sport to watch.

👍

This is the main reason to play them I think. Millions of people have spent lots of money across the country in the middle of a cost of living crisis. To cancel something for no real reason doesnt sit well with me. I don't see how cancelling is more respectful than going ahead with events alongside a tribute to The Queen.

You may get the odd dissenter but they'd be drowned out by the singing and applause I'd guess.

I get your point, but what do you mean cancel for no reason?

I think that’s a fair and reasonable point.

I've got a.close friend who works for sky , apparently all sport cancelled for the next 10 days , announcement soon

I think the championship games may well go ahead and todays meeting is more about protocol and respect.

I also think it’s interesting as a generation that we would have an issue with games being postponed for something which is one in literally 3 generations.

Also to note I find it more interesting that people think players are safer with hecky on the training ground than playing a game!

I can maybe live with sporting events being called off today as a mark of respect but for the next 10 days no way that would be just ridiculous. Leave things to carry on as normal a minutes silence and possibly a rendition of the national anthem is enough to show respect. Life goes on after other people pass on why should this be any different? I think of the heartbreaking image of the Queen sat alone at her husbands funeral with no one to put an arm around her as a small comfort, she had to get on with it as did many other people in the middle of a pandemic. I was allowed 5 people at my own mothers funeral around the same time but you have to get on with life when your head is in turmoil, that is how it is life cannot and does not stop for anyone's passing and nor should it.

I hate Formula 1.

Be a complete piss take if they cancel all the games. In the face of the cost of living crisis with fans spending their hard earned, already heavily taxed earnings to go and see their team. Cancelled trains and hotels all likely non refundable. Yeah its sad she's dead and all that, but life goes on for the peasants.

Speaking for the trains I'm fairly sure they'd be refundable, or at the very least a voucher offered for future travel. Best to check with the operator you have booked with though.

That would be all well and good if you were able to travel midweek to the rearranged fixture a lot might have work or other commitments midweek and not be able to travel, saying you can use your original ticket is no use to them.

Might be tempting to say, “cancel all football for 10 days“ but you need to be practical and look at the logistics.

1: Take Coventry City, they already need to fit 3 home fixtures into their tight schedule.
So if there’s 10 days of mourning every club faces an additonal 3 postponed fixtures.
So what would be the practical solution regards how Coventry fit in SIX fixtures into an already busy fixture list.
Do you extend the season? Can the season be extended?

2: No one has mentioned the European competition.
Flights/ hotels have been booked, these matches have been planned for weeks.
If these are postponed then each match becomes a logistical nightmare to re-arrange.
Some European clubs aren’t wealthy, so they won’t be happy if there’s a financial cost to them.

I really can‘t see how football can be closed down for 10 days, it’s the same reason F1 can’t be cancelled this weekend.
The date of the funeral will be important as all fixtures will be postponed on that date, so that‘s probably 1 fixture per club to re-arrange.

In my view I think the main decision will be whether this weekends fixtures go ahead, wouldn‘t be a massive surprise if they do.
Alternatively you might find just the flagship PL fixtures are postponed (as a PR symbol) and EFL matches go ahead as normal.

I expect all the midweek fixtures in all leagues to go ahead as normal.

I hope all sport is cancelled this weekend. It might be a generational thing but I’m in my 60’s and have no wish to do anything jolly at the moment- a very sad day for our nation.
I’m nearly in my 60s and have completely the opposite view, life goes on and stop trying to lump everyone into your pov.

I liked the Queen and have never had any hard feelings towards her whatsoever, unlike some, but I don't understand how it's in any way more respectful to not play a football match. That thinking seems very old fashioned to me.

I also don't understand how it helps the nation mourn. The vast majority of us will do far more mourning if the match is on, as there will presumably be a minute's silence and the national anthem etc.

As others have said, if there really is a point to it, then we shouldn't be going to work.

My take, for what it's worth, is that there is no way this weekends games are going ahead. They can't postpone Burnley game as a mark of respect/mourning but then 19 hours later play a full fixture list, wouldn't be fair or right.

Apologies, I didn't say use original ticket. You would usually get a voucher for future use, usuable within 12 months. I might not have been too clear about that.

For the record I think the games should go ahead, makes sense to me that if people choose to mourn then before a game would be appropriate.

I would hope the fixtures are played on Saturday as well as the games that should go ahead today, no big disruption to Burnley and Norwich if they play 24 hours later.

I can accept the cancellation of football for 1, 2, 3...10 days, providing all other leisure activities are also cancelled for the same period which would include, but not be restricted to, theatres, cinemas, gigs, pubs, restaurants, public parks, swimming pools, horse riding, bowling alleys, golf courses, angling, night clubs, gyms, dance classes, hiking, mountain climbing, jogging, cycling....
