Has their been an issue with not big enough ground or something? I saw plenty red empty seats on tele. (John st)
Its journos getting the hump on because some of them couldn't get a privileged seat last night. None of them thought to write articles about grounds being too small before the tournament started. UEFA were more than happy to have BDTBL as a semi final venue.

I’m sure a bigger venue would have filled up for an England semi final, hindsight a great thing. But lasts nights match will have been all the more intense as a consequence and will live long in the memories of all those who took part, teams and fans. What a great prelude to a Wembley final, which I am sure will be a fantastic experience for those lucky enough to be there.

A reporter in the Telegraph this morning said it should not have been played at the Lane because it was not big enough . Well it holds 32,000 and it attracted 28,000 so why was it not big enough? Or is it just sour grapes? Every club was invited to offer their ground to host the games but the big clubs turned it down now after the success of the games in Sheffield and other venues they want some of it . Well well well who would have thought it? money money money the greedy gits now want it. True if it was not England playing the interest might not have been as big but without a crystal ball who was to know it would be England playing in the semis . Well they missed out my heart bleeds for them I don't think.
Well done lasses really enjoyed watching you and well done to the Lane they did a great job to . Also how refreshing there were no actors on show like Grealish falling over as if they had been shot ,it was just sheer entertainment with 22 players giving their all for the love of the game just like Football used to be before mega money and Sky came along in the mens game. No doubt Sky will soon put that right and spoil it for ordinary fans who might not be able to afford Sky so being unable to see their hero's .So enjoy it while you can before money spoils it.
Also we may have seen the best ref at the Lane this season, Can not remember her dropping any clangers . us men have a lot to learn ,no body running after the ref asking for this that and the other .Hate to admit it but it was so refreshing to see football being played without cheats actors and being played with good refs .

And so they should be we did the lasses proud mate . Run like clockwork and the stadium looked great.

I hadn’t planned to but I watched last nights game. It’s the first womens game I’ve watched for years.

It didn’t disappoint - lots of action and players running with apparent freedom to attack with some goals which looked great and an England keeper making some excellent saves.

Defensively both sides were poor, it seems that the John Terry school of defending is alive and well with a few last ditch tackles rather than defending tactically. It seems that neither side read the game which made it very open.

I’m guessing the Swedish defence and keeper aren’t normally that bad

The attendances in this tournament have been impressive locally and it sounded a very good atmosphere, similar to that of an U21’s game but with the volume turned up to max as the game went on

Great to see a safe environment for women and kids to go to football and gives hope that we could eradicate our mens game of all the negative trouble causers to create a fan friendly atmosphere at and around games. Said this for years

I hope that this helps to grow the support at womens games. It’s not really for me, I prefer the way the mens game is played with the physicality, the technique and the strategic side of the game. Of course there are many elements of the mens game which need kicking out like diving and treatment of refs.

A very different game and great to see our ground full of England fans

I saw something on Twitter this morning that says the tournament has put £7 million into the local economy (not sure if that figure covered Rotherham too).

All good news. And hopefully South Yorkshire Police have learnt a few lessons about how to Police a football game without antagonising the fans 🙄

I think that was Sheffield but even for both an impressive figure.

I've been guilty of being a bit meh about women's football but do you know what? This last few weeks has been like a trip back in time, decent games with minimal diving, not so many coked up knobheads in town. Just people mixing and enjoying it for what it is. It's been great.

This. Sure the strength and athleticism may be behind the mens game - for now but, the rhythm of the game was totally different, so much better. Refs decisions accepted, game flowed no theatrics. The mens game should open their eyes - all of those things we hate could be gone in a season if the people who run the game had the desire to make it happen. Sadly, the amount of money has corrupted the mens game beyond repair I fear.

saved a certain goal for 2-1, & she pivotal as that we couldve gone behind after 20seconds & if Sweden had taken their chances in the 1st 25 mins. wouldve been a very different game. but like Netherlands games they couldnt
Her performance between the sticks shouldn't be underestimated, a couple of stand out saves, but more than that, just an air of competent assurance. Never looked in trouble, did everything asked with ease. Not something that is often said about people playing that position, men and women.

I agree the atmosphere reminded me of the world cup in 66 .There was a party feel all over the city and felt mega safe for families no idiots off the field or on it . Showing my age now but when something happens that is so special as what we witnessed last night and in 66 it tends to stick in your mind forever .Happy happy days great fun we just need to get rid of the knob heads and idiots and this could become the norm at the Lane .Can not see it happening but I can dream to many arseholes to get rid of.

Apparently (according to the Council's senior events guy who was interviewed on the radio yesterday) we were originally down to host the opening game but the organisers wanted to shift it because they wanted a bigger ground, so they offered us the semi final as an alternative, which was agreed. Turns out it was very good call by United and the council to take the semi instead.

The "for now" comment made me laugh.

Are you seriously suggesting that women athletes can ever be stronger than male athletes?
After many 100,000's years of evolution women are about the same strength as 16 year old boys.
Can't see that fact change over the next several 1000 years.

The reduction in power/ strength does offer some advantages.
Noticed some the slide rule passes were excellent during this tournament, where as in the mens game they have more power and tend to over hit passes.

I watched last nights game and really enjoyed it.
However part of the reason is "I want the women's team to win but it's not that important"

When I watch United I don't always enjoy the experience because I'm almost too tense and on edge.
When we lose it does spoil my weekends. When we're playing well and winning I'm happier all week.
I'm in my 50's and know not to take United too seriously, my brain accepts this but my heart is so intertwined to the club like I'm a drug addict.

Womens football is about entertainment where as mens football has become tribal.
The excess passion is what makes mens football more special but it can and often does boil over.
Womens football takes it back to basics and I think the mens game could learn something from it.

Amen to that. Fucking piggy cunts.

Was rehearsing last night, so missed the game which was sad as I have watched every other one. The Spain game to me was the pivotal ninety minutes and the real test of mettle. I don't give a shit what people say about our equaliser - I'll range Lampard's goal v Germany on that score to settle. Stanway's rocket put paid to anything anyway.

But to see England (let's not classify it any other way - they represent all of us, not just 'the women') come away from the Sweden game looking ten times what any opposition team has in this tournament was fucking ace. And it's refreshing to see so many on here saying their heads have been firmly turned and even the most begrudging cynic now humbled. For the rest who feel the Lionesses are stealing their sandwiches, just contextualise the situation that women's football isn't here to replace the men's game but to be alongside it, with I feel a whole raft of better philosophies to note, chief of all the spirit and manner in the way they play the same game.

If they succeed in the final on Sunday - and I hope it's in front of a capacity Wembley stadium with millions watching at home - my wish is that we give the women's game the deserved bandwidth it deserves. They will have achieved something their male counterparts have striven for for many decades and themselves come back from the brink of winning trophies before, rebuilt their belief and above all else, made football the winner.

There was a shot of a young lass after the game in an England shirt dancing her arse off, singing herself daft and so 'in the moment'. I hope she's kicking a football next week in games at school with the rest of them.

We had a girl who used to play footy with us up on the Hemsworth estate back in the 70s. She was awesome and never got near school team playing, but had it all in the bag.

That girl has been invited to the final.
She's from Wakefield and will be with Gabby and Alex on Sunday. 🎂😍

Yeah - it's fucking brilliant. She showed that in her heart, football matters. It's no one's game but everyone's.

My missus said 'wouldn't it be ace if they gave her tickets?' and there you go.

Hope she has a fucking awesome time and watches our heroines lift the Euro trophy as it happens.

It is easy to be sentimental about the good old days. Looking at film of games from the 50s/60s in many respects makes me squirm (the grounds, the pitches, lack of athleticism, etc), but I am with you 100% on the atmosphere. Those under age of 50(?) have no idea what they are missing in terms of being to mingle with opposition fans without fear of it turning ugly. I followed Utd all over the country from the age of about 10 into my teens, and the pleasure of mingling with other fans before, during and after the games was an integral part of the sport; that included going on the Kop at Hillsborough. The sad thing is that we now just accept that crowds have to be segregated. The women’s Euros have shown it does not have to be thus.
