Might this have been when he left to go to Chesterfield?

Silent confirmed this , in which case I’m thinking that the car may have belonged to the snooker player and entrepreneur Mike Watterson who had close ties with Chesterfield .

He was the man responsible for bringing the Snooker World Championship to the Crucible . He also took part in it and was a very decent player and by all accounts , a very sound and likeable bloke .

He didn’t get involved at Chesterfield until the early eighties when his cash saved them from going under. Maygg by e Shentall?

Not officially involved , but a long time supporter and person of influence way before then .

I worked for a firm that worked with Chesterfield. It was a very tight ship, the main men were Shentall and Newton. Can’t recall MW being mentioned anywhere as having any influence before he bailed them out and went on the board.

Couple of other things, the photo is from 1976. MW was only an amateur snooker player then, albeit a very very good one and future UK champion before turning pro. He made his money after getting the Crucible championship up and running, when he did have a roller. New with the plate Cue 1.

He was a a car salesman in 1976. Unlikely to have had RR money even for an old one.

Very nice bloke by all accounts screwed over by Rex Williams

Good info that , all of which points to your theory as to who the car’s owner might be being a better one than mine .

Photo one, Hi hooooooo....which ones this, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, or Titch?
Manfield, my shoe shop of choice from around 1955.
Photo two, how many men does it take to raise a flag? In my day, at sunrise and sunset, two, NCO with whistle and flagman. In sight of event and not stood to attention, put on a fizzer.
Good photos SB, I've not see before, ta.

“ ....... and took just eight weeks to build .” !!!!
Bit like a 'Meccano' set, "eesy peezy", erect main frame, then fill in walls, could more or less start one end and as construction progressed finishing off in completed sections, plus much manpower helps enormously. If looked at it's only an aircraft hanger, though at that time there wouldn't be many aircraft around.

That’s a great article. The building time was short, but so was the life of the Olympia as a cinema, having been a skating rink for a couple of years, then a 2,000 seater cinema for three weeks before becoming a roller skating rink again. I thought incompetence was a modern phenomenon, clearly not 🙂

I find this story really interesting. As a kid I lived on Asline Rd , right next to this place and never knew the history of it.
A great piece of history.

Everything was so much better back in those days , I miss them , you could put your foot down going through that dip , I remember doing it in my first car going to the lane , now you have to stop for traffic lights , bus lanes, bike lanes , traffic calming and cameras .
Plus you could actually fill your car with out a mortgage and park up in town somewhere !

That could well be the first photo Bert posted on this thread which has now disappeared.
.............and with a wider angle. Trying to remember who's on the floor. First thought was Hawksworth then realised he had gone back to Huddersfield so recon it's his replacement in a swop+cash, Ronnie Simpson.
