Programmes were in very short supply at Blackpool last night. I managed to get the last one from two different programme kiosks.

Time for another catch up...

Preston North End.

Historically the North End have never had a programme to write home about, from newspaper type issues of the late 70s, square shaped ones, to more modern day ones made from recyclable paper that Rowlinson Comprehensive used to have in the toilets.

Glossy 84 pager with all this season's covers featuring a player with a squad number, Ben Whiteman adorns the cover for United's issue.

Same programme used, that was printed for the original postponed fixture on boxing day

Larger text throughout than a lot of its contempories which is good for blind people like myself and the programme kicks off with the traditional manager and Captain's comments followed by an article on former blade Whiteman.

Squad profiles on Wes, Egan, Ozzy, MGW, Norwood and our Billy. Top Trumps matches MGW with Daniel Johnson with MGW coming-out out on top.

Feature on local lads who have played for Preston over the years and players wearing certain squad numbers since the millennium, No7s in this issue

14 pages of adverts which isn't too shabby but the overall impression is that its lightweight on anything interesting.

Probably....

The ruling that clubs had to produce a match day programme no longer applies.

some clubs were very quick to say we lose money on programmes (we've got so many left etc etc) so we're not going to do them anymore.

Its a bit of a cop out. If you're a club with an average attendance of 20000, and on average you sell 1000 programmes, it shouldn't be too difficult to make money, depending on the away attendance,...... you can alter that weekly.

The pandemic has made the situation even worse, with clubs employing some kid with an IT degree from Uni and suggesting that the way forward is digital

Its not, ........its being lazy.

This season, Derby, Blackburn, Bristol City and Reading all did not issue and many of those that did are watered down.

Only time will tell

Saw one of the CBF Royalty at Sheffield Club last Saturday and he reminded me that I'm miles behind on this season's programme review. So lets crack on:

Wolves

84 page effort from Premier League Wolves.

Manager Bruno Lage reminds us that he was at the snort beasts with Hecky whilst Conor Coady always speaks with fondness of his time at S2.

Big match preview from Wolves legend Steve Bull, who suggests that whichever team Wolves put out they'll be able to dribble the ball around us all day long. That's Nice.

Good 6 page section on the Blades and a friends reunited double pager Coady and Jack Robinson from their time in the England Youth Team.

Wolves and Blades Combined team: Burridge, hill, McAlle, Craddock, Curle, B.Shaw, Cowans, Evans, Eves, Blake, Sturridge.

8 pages on one of Wolves Youngsters followed by a classic Cup clash a 3-0 defeat for us back in 1949.

Good article about Wolves road to FA Cup Glory concentrating on the 1892/3 season. Remember it well.

From then on the programme takes a more standard format, Academy, Women and Community and a host of advertisements.

The big shock that it wasn't in Portuguese.

Yorkshire's biggest programme Fair is this Saturday (28th May) at Pudsey Civic Hall in Leeds. Always a decent one.

All Blades AWAY programmes
v Blackpool (league cup Rd 2) 1993/94
v Stockport 1999/2000
v Blackpool 2007/08
v Huddersfield (league cup Rd 2) 2008/09
v Hartlepool Utd (league cup Rd 1) 2011/12
Along with Manchester United away 1946/47 and Wolves home 1946/47 (the rarest Blades home programme) these are the only ones I need league and cup back to 1944. The annoying thing was that I went to 4 of the five games

Thanks for thinking of me. It’s much appreciated but (like a number of United collectors) when it comes to league and cup games I now only need the Wolves 46/7 in the cup at home. I live in hope.If anyone has a spare copy of Stocksbridge PS pre season 2016 (Wilders first game in charge) I’d happily pay a tenner for it

Blades won 2-1, Cyril Dale, debutant alongside Ron Hewitt goalkeeper, scored both goals, one a penalty.
Albert Nightingale and Alex Forbes both missed penalties.

When our game against Newcastle was cancelled at the start of Covid, I was in Newcastle (for the game) and thought I'd get myself a programme anyway as it would inevitably become a collectors item, only to find that none had been printed as the cancellation came in sufficient time for the printer. Which considering the game was cancelled on the Friday if I remember correctly!

I went in the NUFC club shop first, only to discover that (at the time) it was just another Sports Direct!
The guy who told me that none had been printed owns the sports memorabilia shop in the Toon.
He probably had some but wanted to hang onto to make a future profit. The Geordie bastard!

On the Saturday morning I took the dog for a drive and a walk, up to Newcastle and can confirm your story as it was identical to mine.

The club shop said they hadn't had any and directed me to the 'Hold the back page' shop. he said that they don't print them until the Friday night and so they hadn't done one.

A few days later I'd got wind that they had indeed printed some, and contacted the guy in the media department who was very helpful and said they were in the club shop. The morning after the dog had a tour of North East non league grounds and another stop-off at St James to collect half a dozen programmes.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I've just remembered the Antiques Roadshow episode filmed in the Lake District in 2021(?) where this guy, originally from Sheffield, had two programs from a Sheffield Hallamshire Cup tournament that the expert dated as being the oldest actual football programs and outdating what was thought to be the previous oldest program by some years. And the previous 'oldest' program had recently been sold for a significant amount of money!
Unfortunately the episode is unavailable on iPlayer.

I’m trying to convince the missus to let me go on a mad binge of programme collecting. And just fill the attic up with them.

I think when they eventually go away in the next 5 years, the older ones will become very collectible.

If your looking for value and collectability then start with the 1950s and work backwards. 1960s onwards in bulk can be bought for relatively little. For references then Google sharrowblade Flickr. He has put together a comprehensive blades section with 99% of post war having pictures

Those of you who still buy programmes, what do you think of our programme this season? I think it's an interesting read and well presented. I think my one quibble would be that 12 pages in every programme devoted to the equivalent home game of the first Premier League season, much of it reproductions of the 30 year old match programme, seems way over the top to me, and I usually love stuff like that. That's only a minor quibble though. Overall it's a good read with the price again frozen at £3.50.

Good to see people talking about our programmes etc etc. Im Currently in Albufeira so can't possibly comment on our match programmes but im back next week. As always if anyone has any questions about specific programmes feel free to ask although Spongebob has as much knowledge as me. He's a great lad and has a great collection and is always willing to help.
