A bit of a black and white question here as i'm sure the reality will be very different, but given the choice, would you want to stick with the current team (Minus MGW) and have no additions, keeping hold of players who are likely departures like Berge

Or say goodbye to a handful of players (let's say - Berge, Egan, McBurnie, Bogle) with the expectation of replacements including a new CAM and CB as required?

I can see us losing the following which will force a rebuild:
Egan (to be a PL squad player Everton, West Ham. or a champ rival like Burnley, Norwich )
Baldock (somewhere that helps him fulfil his international ambitions Panathinaikos, Celtic ),
Berge if a decent deal comes in
I can then see Ndiaye and Bogle showing early season form and moving too late in the window.

This will leave us scrambling for players on loan

The question is a bit misleading.

The underlying question is "Do we want Sheff United to be run properly so the books are balanced"?
or "Do we overspend risking everything to be promoted next season....failure means Profit and Sustainability issues and a large points deduction"

Our income had dropped massively next season so surely we need to cut salaries massively too.
The main hope is to sell our valuable players and re-invest in younger players (who hopefully end up better).

Did a job in the first season back in the premier league for a top 10 finish, or was that finish because of everybody else?
So did Mousset but I'm glad he's gone as well, barring a handful of decent performances in the first PL season he's been a disastrous signing from both a football and financial perspective.

It is arguable that the goals Moose got in the first season meant he paid for himself

Is someone in Dronfield able to look in on O Fletch?

I really don‘t think he should be left on his own. 😲

I was on about McBurnie. I don't disagree that Mousset paid for his first year at the club, since then he's been a money pit.

I might being naive here, but we ran a profit last year, so wouldn’t keeping our current squad basically just nullify or reduce the profit and we’d be close to breaking even or have a small loss?

Don't let little things like "accounts" fool you, that distracts from the "we're skint, the same as forever, we've got to sell Berge/Egan to keep paying for that wage thief crock of a number 9" narrative

That was our 2nd year in the prem I think.

It depends on what reductions we have in wages for players. We'll also be losing a chunk of wages already with the players released.

I don't think there will be a fire sale, but don't expect much coming in.

If we literally kept the same players, we'd be mid-table next season.

Our two main midfielders are 30 and 31 and by all admissions weren't great for much of the season. Our main striker is 36.

I think we were getting 100% out of all players by the end of the season. That's unsustainable, even with injured players coming back.

MGW was the difference between play-offs and mid-table. We're not getting as impactful a player on loan. Along with Wes having the best form of his career.

we'd also have a very small squad at the start of next season.

Players can only leave if the Club agrees. Why would they let quality players go late in the window if they don’t have replacements ? This is not the club of old

I know that we’re all debating but there’s no information yet we’re far too early for the good stuff so we’ll just have to muse and entertain ourselves with ‘I think’ and ‘what if’ comments nothing will start to happen for another month.

Forget yesterday's heroes .... no loyalty in this game .... move on ... fresh meat needed ASAP

We move on those not offering anything for a start in addition to the released list, but looking at players talked about-

Forwards
Burke is more interested in swanning about in tasteless chavvy designer gear- Fuck him off for a start
McB- Hard to tell if he suits Hecky, clearly has something as he’s proven at this level before and did ok at times in the prem. cant get rid though as he needs to be fit. He stays

Brewster- huge season coming up for him, don’t see anyone offering close to the money we would want to sell due to fitness and performance early season. He stays
Sharp- New deal so staying.
Ndiye- Hope no offers come in, however there will be interest from the premier league, reckon if someone tempted us with £15-20 m we would sell to make up for the deemed failure of Brewster and inability to move him on.

Midfield
Berge- clearly a quality player, still feel he’s playing within himself and yet to find his actual role. We value him over £20m, don’t see anyone offering that. However may see a loan to buy offer land from a newly promoted side or abroad, and the concern is we will want to lose his salary from the bill and take it!
Fleck/Norwood- easily good enough for this league when fit- get them fucking fit and there is no question we don’t need to spend to replace them!

Defence-
Lowe- was let go by the last manager to a club who got him performing and look good to go up. We have 3 left backs…which is the higher paid? Probably Enda…he’s of that age where his value is gonna drop off a cliff, so sell for whatever we can get. RND and Lowe to be the two in the squad.
Baldock- like Enda, plus we have a younger and very talented player in Bogle. If there is interest, and a fair fee over £2m we should sell. Look to youth as Bogle back up, with Bash and one or two others able to do a job if really needed.
Egan- suspect he will want another go at the prem- regular for Ireland, at the top of his game and not getting younger. If we get a decent offer we should sell and look to rebuild.

This would mean a full rebuild with additions at LCB/CB/ RCB as we are definitely short in those positions.
Harsh as it seems, not sure Davies is the right fit with the issues he’s carrying. Uremevic will be expensive. Avoid those two.
MGW will take some replacing, and he’s not coming back.
So, loan a couple of players with similar reputation to MGW and hope we hit the jackpot again, also have to cover the creativity lost with Didsy!
New central back line made up of free transfers.
No change to midfield unless we sell Berge.
Forward line remains unless Ndiaye bid comes in as above.
Keeper- need something better than Eastwood to push Wes

No sales for Ndiye and Berge….we add a keeper, 3 central defenders, and a couple of big name high potential loans in attacking positions. If McB remains unfit look for a loan to replace him.
Give Loparta, Brunt, Gordon, Seriki, Jebbo, til January to prove their worth to the first team squad and if not up to it get replacements in Jan and send them out on loan.

Should be able to get decent money for the sale of Burke, Berge, Egan (and Baldock if he wants to go to Greece). Unlikely to be able to sell McBurnie, but if we can then we should do so.

This would fund a combination of permanents plus loans, to augment the very small squad (small in terms of the players who are capable of delivering at the top end of the Championship).

We need 3 x CH, 1 x DM, 1 x CM, 1 x AM and 2 x quality strikers to compete in top 6 this year.
