Monty/Doyle

Our improvement is far too significant to be attributed simply to a drop in class. We are playing properly for the first time in many years and it's getting better as we go. I'm loving it. This team would hold its own in the Championship and by the time Danny has finished will be promotion contenders. Last season's shambles never played the sort of exhilarating, effective football we are beginning to see and enjoy.

As for Monty, let others have the stage this time. I prefer to acknowledge Doyle's outstanding performances and admire the sublime footballer alongside him.

You just love him dont you. you cannot resist.

The only caveat I would put on all this is that Wilson has yet to convince me that he's capable of tweaking the tactics mid-game if things aren't going to plan. There was a lot of commentary around Warnock's departure from QPR saying that he was an excellent motivator lacking tactical knowledge. They used Paul Lambert's Norwich as an example - Norwich did the double over QPR with both winners coming after Lambert altered the shape of the Norwich team.

We have the players to beat Charlton and if it's 0-0 at 70 minutes I'd say we might well be favourites. However, if Charlton go 1-0 up, I'm not sure that we'd be able to alter the approach to get a reward. Would Wilson be able to switch to 3 at the back (moving LJF inside and encouraging Lowton and Quinn, say, to get forward)?

I'd absolutely love to be proved wrong, by the way and I'm glad that we're all back supporting a football side which is, for the majority of the time, good to watch.

There was an interview with DW within the last week or so and he was discussing team's tactics etc saying that in this Division, there's a marked change in most teams in the 2nd half of a season. From listening to him, he sounded completely on top of what was going on, what is expected and how we're going to cope with it. I appreciate what you're saying about changing tactics within a game but if you get it right in the 1st place, more often than not that will be good enough in this Division.

For me, DW has shown that he has what it takes to get out of this Division, it may still not be this year for us, time will tell but I don't think it'll be down to a lack of tactics.

I agree completely - but the tests are the games away at Charlton, Wednesday and Huddersfield. Avoid defeat in those three and we're in a great position.

I'm concerned that if we don't go up (and that's still the most likely outcome), that Wilson will be given a brown sandwich to munch on next season. All the high earners and promising youngsters go, and we're left building a team from scratch.

It could take another two years to challenge again, and our more prejudiced fans won't give him chance. More managerial switches follow....

We said that last season and only Macdonald and LJF in the team on Tuesday were new.

I disagree. With 9 home game - which are all winnable - even allowing for a mishap of dropping 4-6 points at home, we will need to pick up 16 points from 12 away games to get to 90 points. If we cannot pick this up - and even allowing for not getting any points from those three - we do not deserve to be going up anyway.

By the early February it could be 9-12 points from 9 games!

strikes me that, with a couple of possible exceptions, everyone from the bottom 6 of the prem to the top 6 of division one are much of a muchness, position being entirely dependent on who is 'on a roll' at the time.. DW has managed to stop the downward spiral and we are now rebounding.. if we can maintain momentum, then we could do a norwich/southampton.. PLUS we are now playing the right style of football to remain successful in the long term.. warnock always comes a cropper because he hoofs his way out of the champ. and then has to make wholesale changes for the prem which he simply doesn't have the time/budget to complete
DW strikes me as a canny bloke.. he was one of the more intelligent midfielders in his day so i think (hope) he'll have a good understanding of tactics and stuff for the rest of the season. I'm big on ironies and i always said 'wouldn't it be ironic if an ex owl was the start of a successful period for us'. .that's sods law.. i'm pleased with progress so far.. if doyle can put monty out of the picture i will be eternally grateful to him

so what happened?.. just like us they couldn't make the transition for some reason <shrugs>

Aye, but the longer you're in this league, the more you need to cut your cloth. It just gets harder.

Obviously things could still change personnel wise in the next few weeks but if we do go up, there's less likelihood of the Squinny's of this world leaving but we're always susceptible to losing the likes of Harry, whichever division we're in. If we don't make it this season, I'm fully confident that DW could pick up suitable players such as Lecs and Macca to do the business at reasonable cost.

There'll always be the anti DW brigade but hopefully, even if we don't go up, he (and his team) have shown enough in terms of the way he wants to play for him to be given at least another season without the fans getting at him. Generally, the fans won't complain if the football is good and we're picking up wins. No reason that would change in this division even if the squad was turned on it's head.
