I'm not even going to go into detail there Bert; I'd do your own research but in summary he owned one of the biggest clubs in the country and was twice relegated into the Championship then appointed Steve Bruce and was struggling to stay up!
Mcabe got us relegated twice and kept us in lower leagues but some laud him.

Newcastle fans issue with Ashely was that he was happy to just keep them in the premier league.

Something we could only dream of at the minute

Ashley will spend the money to get us up and spend (enough) to keep us there. Given we’ve had thirty years of trying and failing to do that, I’d take a punt and ride the tiger.

Genuine question. Does anyone care if Bramall Lane was to change names? It will always be Bramall Lane to me, but I cant say I look at the name on paper every day and feel proud its not been changed. I dont think i'd feel any anger if it did change, it would only be temporary like any ownership is.

Like St. James Park was always that to me regardless of what it was changed to by Mike Ashley.

Totally agree with Superblades below ⬇️. I really couldn't give a flying what it's called if that sponsorship revenue allows us to increase the wage budget and compete more in the PL if we get there. Plenty of teams do it anyway. Why do we need to remain in the dark ages?

Nope, wouldn’t bother me and I’d still refer to it as Bramall Lane.

People turning there nose up at one of the richest men in the UK

Whilst happy we have an owner who had to re-mortgage his house to fund the club

At least he knows his football he finished 10,000 in the FPL fantasy football though

Its baffling it really is

He makes no money out of us or any other team without us being a premiership team so he has to invest initially to get us up.

We as a fan base don’t have the unrealistic expectations that the Newcastle fans have, many of us would be happy as a yo-yo team and I’d certainly take 17th in the premiership for a few seasons until he looks to cash in on us.

I find it a bit odd he wants to get back into ownership.he has got pelters for years, football is a tough business to make money in and I can't imagine many people bought stuff from his other business because Newcastle had a ground with the same name.

I can't believe any Blades fan would want Mike Ashley as owner?! He may be very rich but look how little he invested at Newcastle and how a club as big as Newcastle were struggling and were relegated twice under his time. Some might say Newcastle are not as big as they think they are but how many teams in the UK can draw in 50,000 plus every week!? That makes them a big club in my view, not to mention their history and they should have won the PL under Keegan, again how many other clubs other than the usual big hitters are able to say that, only Leicester have broken that, I don't include Blackburn as they spent the most of any team at the time.

What disaster did Ashley inflict on Newcastle
Newcastle, like us, probably the 2 most underachieving clubs in England when you cross reference support vs trophies won in the past 50 odd years.

They've had some unpopular managers but they've been consistently in the PL and when they've dropped out, they've come straight back.

He's made decent money out of the sale of Newcastle and whilst I'm not blindly endorsing him, who amongst us wouldn't have taken Newcastle's trajectory over our own during his time there?

It's not as if he comes into his next club with no knowledge of how to run a football club like Chansiri for instance.

Arguably, football is the biggest marketing tool there is. You only have to look on this forum and the mere mention of Mike Ashley starts a load of sports direct jokes.

I dont think Mike Ashley is arsed what people think of him. As long as he was in the Premier League with Newcastle, it gave his business interests maximum exposure, hence thats why he kicked into gear when they got relegated.

I actually think I’d be quite confident of going up and staying up with him at the helm. What happens then, well, who knows? But it would be in his interests to get us up ASAP for him as well as us. As fans though I suppose you have to weigh up whether it means he’d really have the clubs best interests at heart or whether it really is all for his financial gain.

I wouldn't say he would be as bad as Newcastle fans make out either. They have Wednesday level delusions of grandeur. Not to say he's never done anything wrong but who can be in football that long and get everything right? L

This exactly.

The main problem at Newcastle, just like West Ham is they think they are a lot bigger than they actually are, that they have a God given right to be in the top 6 year in year out, to win trophies and compete with the elite in the transfer market....Ashley may have made some mistakes at the Toon but he was no way near as bad as they make out......incredible sense of entitlement up there.

Would love the 76er’s owners but that’s never going to happen. They’ve invested loads into the team and wages at 76er’s.

We need something to happen as the “free transfers and playing our academy graduates” rhetoric is emerging. No doubt a fire sale is coming and we’ll be in a real mess next season.

I say that they’ve invested loads but that’s on the face of it. One of the most expensive wage bills in the NBA but I have no idea how it’s funded. They might be geared to the hilt.

Would fans prefer a Mike Ashley type of owner, or a consortium of American business men, I.e The consortium that tried to take over us, and then managed to get Burnley, using borrowed money. I would rather have one rich owner, then go down the line of what Burnley are facing.

Surely the prince has a mega rich mate from Saudi that sees us as minions and throws laundered money at us like fun coupons.

As Jim Phipps once said ‘think liverpool’

This. Judging on our past stewardships (including those still in hiding and out of prison) we must rank as one if not the most neglected club with potential like ever. The promotions, crowds, play-offs, cup runs etc we’ve achieved on a feckin shoestring is second to none.

I’ll give credit to PA he gave it all he could with his limited finances but did he had a sporting vision, he was ‘politically aware’, he was a competent legal and financial businessman that saw off the shark McCabe was.

I can’t see Mike Ashley taking us on, why would he? But if he did I’d give him and his wonga a chance, at least he has a track record of PL and EFL under his belt unlike our current board. Money alone is not enough, you need football in ya blood, look at our tuna murdering neighbours in S6, the likes of Ashley would relish grinding them underfoot and making us an average but constant force in the PL imo.

My guess is all the speculation will only come to fruition if we got into and won the playoffs. Otherwise it’s like Rodley said next season

It’s hard to believe that Sheffield United fans would like an Ashley takeover, given the fact that his only real qualification is his immense wealth.

Our fans spend most of their time moaning about perceived faults with our club, but be careful what you wish for.
