Wales manager Gary Speed confirmed dead

Wales football manager Gary Speed died.

His death was confirmed in a statement by the Football Association of Wales.

The statement said: "We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family. We ask that everyone respects the family's privacy at this very sad time."

Speed took over the Wales job in February, and earlier this month, said the side's rapid improvement had exceeded all expectations.

Great player and it's a shame we only saw him in the twilight of his career for SUFC, how we could have used him in our Premier League season. Despite his rocky managerial record at United, I firmly believed he would become a good manager with time. His improvement with Wales was showing that. Absolutely no idea why he would want to hang himself (if that is what has happened) - he looked well, smiling and joking with Gary McAllister on Football Focus yesterday lunchtime. RIP to a football legend.

BBC and SKY are reporting that Police and family have confirmed that he took his own life. Tragic
