The Lane tribute
I was sat in the Emirates departure lounge at Manchester Airport last Sunday, when I got the text from my mate to say that Speed had hung himself. Thought it was a wind up. He texted me straight after to say it wasn't a wind up. Sure enough it wasn't and it was confirmed only minutes later when I saw it on the TV.
I had to call my mum (a Blades ST) for something else before the flight departed and she was in tears.
I've kind of being out of it all during the last week, but i've fortunately been able to get sky news, the sun on iPad and of course S24SU.com, where i've managed to keep up with the feelings. To say i've been shocked, stunned and moved by it all is an understatement.
But... I had to go to Sheffield today, so I called at the Lane.
What a lovely touch the posters on the Car park lights are, but the truly moving part was the rain and sleet sodden tributes in between the two statues. T-shirts, flowers, Footy shirts - Blades, Leeds, Wednesday, Everton, Rotherham and Torquay. Scarves from many of the same, as well as one from Newcastle and Arsenal. There were Photos, calendars, cards and poems to and about Speed.
Really moving and a real tribute to a really well respected man.
If only Speedo knew how much people cared, thought and felt about him, perhaps he'd still be here.
Still can't believe he's gone. But well done to all those who have contributed to the tributes
RIP Speedo
