I don't agree Darren.

The form of Cresswell, Simonsen, Nosworthy and Quinn collapsed
Ditto Ward, who then got injured.
Yeates played well when Reid was here and was dreadful otherwise
Monty was worse than the previous year
We didn't have half a year of Walker or Kilgallon
Britton was even worse than Harper had been
Morgan was injured nearly all season

That team was significantly worse than the season before. Many of the players fell off a cliff. And I'm not sure that was down to a new manager, as only Quinn is appreciably better under any of 3 3 who've managed for any period of time since.

Hartlepool is a key game because it was the game when various people I have spoken to and who post on here started to talk seriously about relegation. My father said to me that night that he could not see where the goals were going to come from that season, and he was right.

I was sat in Crete with a stranger blade watching Cardiff V blades on opening day and was disapointed we drew. Felt really positive about the upcoming season.......................WHAT HAPPENED!!!!

Well, we will never know, given that we only had 2 league games under KB that season - one good performance and one poor one. I really don't see though, at the worst, that KB would have done worse than Speed, who had all the problems you mention to contend with and still kept us in lower mid table form.

>I've seen three of four managers try and change the culture of the club by playing this mythical total football, and to be honest it has failed every time.
err sorry mate but no you haven't .. we never attempted it at all. you can't play total football with players like monty and doyle so that is a complete non starter.

>Ive never understood the idea that playing lots of sideways passes in midfield makes for 'entertainment'
it doesn't .. that is a complete and utter myth.. it depends what you do with the damned thing after you have passed it sideways.. simply passing it sideways for the sake of it like collins does isn't impressing me but some of you seem to think it makes us somehow immitating barcelona.. the point of the tactic is to constantly change the point of attack and probe for holes (in contrast to hoofing it to the forward who loses it anyway).. anyway the proof of the pudding is in the eating .. all of the best teams play posession football which involves passing.. as kicking it in the air gives more chance of losing it.. so it is a means to an end
some of you just dont fucking get it do you..

Dont think anyone is suggesting that United should hoof it.

The finer point is that we dont necessarily have the right sort of players to "probe" as you say.

Passing it sideways and being patient is fine if you have some movement up front.

We totally lack that and hence do not stretch the opposition. Therefore endless tip-tap with no end product.

One would assume that this is the reason people are not finding it entertaining.

To play a proper passing game you HAVE to have players that can move and receive the ball. Unfortunately the 2 strikers that started Saturdays game are far too static and the 2 wingers were woeful, Macdonald didnt play well and Doyle was Doyle

yep.. porter is static (statuesque?).. and evans is.. umm.. 'unconventional' he never seems to be where he is supposed to be :).. doyle makes monty look like messi and williamson doesn't like it on the wing. neither does quinn by the looks of it as he likes to get involved, collins is an accident waiting to happen and simmo is a vampire (nice one munxy).. other than that it is looking good :D

By knocking it long you are getting forwards in to the positions of maximum opportunity early on and more likely to hit teams on the break, and by doing this you aren't losing the ball in a vulnerable position.

I read some research a bit back where the finding was that the vast percentage of goals stemmed from moves that contained 4 passes or less.

Dear oh dear oh dear. We hit a rough patch and the We  Hoof Brigade are out in force.

We've given proper football a fair chance. A dozen games is more than enough. Back to good old Hoof: Success guaranteed.

We're Sheffield United you know; not a football team. We know no better; We deserve no better.

It's not about going back to good old hoof as you put it, but assessing the current run of poor form and making a suggestion about how to snap out of it.

Most teams in this division play negative, defensive football, and look to hit teams on the break, and rather than playing to negate that by playing attractive football, we need to be prepared for those tactics, and if necessary playing them, and being better than them at their own game.

I'd much rather see us winning game playing hoofball, than losing playing this so called total football

I find it amazing that a poster who was complainng about 50% tax rates can't grasp the concept that football isn't played at either end of a spectrum. Clearly wealth isn't always earned.

The thing is, in some quarters, unless you playing total football, everything else is classed as hoofball.

I'm just waiting for Olly to come along waxing lyrical about Dinosaur Dave and the we  hoof brigade.

Trouble is , the bright new world of pass and move was based upon a big clearout of the players from last season. That hasn't happened so it can't happen until all the contracts run down.

So, do we continue to labour under the pretence we're doing something noble or do we set up to suit the abilities and experiences of the players who's wages we are paying?

Winning football is what I want. Preferably, exciting, pacey, attacking football ...but I'd settle for winning. Watching someone like Bale running at people with pace is far more exciting than watching a team passing it around but going nowhere.

It's about winning first and foremost. Other factors add to the excitement. Free flowing football, preferably in the opposition half, preferably at a pace that stretches the opposition and gets the fans off their feet. In some respects, it can sound complicated. But the simplest fact of all is that if you're not winning, none of it matters.

One other point.

At the moment i think the input of Monty has been sadly missed since has been injured, earlier on in the season where we was playing total football and winning games, i think he was instrumental in it, and is a lot more influential that many people give him credit for.

"And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time,
It's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind,
It's just a shadow you're seein' that he's chasing."

The usual entirely fallacious quantum leap of logic of the We  Hoof Brigade.

I wearily repeat: History shows, beyond any scintilla of a minute trace of an iota of an argument that the most successful teams are those that play proper football.

Why do you think Barcelona don't hire the 11 most effective hoofers in the world? They could; They don't.

I don't think there is any case to answer, as i know i'm right in this situation.

I'm not against attractive football, i'm pro hoof, i'm just a fan of winning football.

Because they've got shit loads of money and the best players don't need to hoof it and also cost a lot?

At some point, are you going to reveal some kind of trick to this question?

You can give Pep Guardiola all the money he needs and he creates a work of art, and i appreciate the football that Barcelona play just as much as the next man, but give him the same transfer budget Danny Wilson has got, and place him in League 1, and do you think he could get his style of football to work?

"But I don't want to go among mad people," said Alice. "Oh, you can't help that," said the cat. "We're all mad here."

Take away the footballing style, does your Pale Rider taste nicer when Sheffield United have won?

Of course it does, but hoofball is like lager: No flavour, no character, lifeless, same every time.

I'm absolutely certain of it. The proof of the pudding is in Southampton, Brighton and Peterborough. Not a Hoof between the three of them!

But if you want to get drunk, it still does the trick...

...and then you vomit and have a headache all day.
