what I don't understand though is the two Scots are midfielders, an area where we have more than enough players, yet if they don't come we will go for a striker and a left back. Eh?
I think that we actually need a striker and a defender.

LB is still an issue, although Andy Taylor is getting close to returning and at this level should be more than adequate cover. I think we need a quick striker, someone who can run at players similar to Danny Webber.

Agree with that WB.

If Taylor was back, we'd be fine in defence IMO. Ertl will be very solid at this level and Kennedy can come in at a pinch. Maybe Marc Warren is good enough to fill in?

Having said that, if rumours about us bringing in an 'international' left back are true, maybe we're considering pushing LJF into the middle.

He is, but he's already at the club.

And I'd doubt an under 20s international, would be the same as an international. The rumour is probably bobah anyway.

Perhaps they are better than what we've got? Or different. Hutton will be a vast improvement on the soon to depart Montgomery and Fleck is perhaps more of a 'just behind the strikers' player.

Quality is all. Large quantities of mediocrity is mediocrity. That said, we do have some impressive midfielders right now.

According to Blades Mad ( another not very reliable source) he had a meeting with mcCabe last week.
I think he would be a good asset as a goal poacher provided his wages werent out of kilter with the rest of the squad

He's scored 9 goals since leaving us. No thank you. Rather get a pacey premiership loanee than a washed up 33 year old.

My thoughs entirely. We need pace. I can't see what Beattie wuld bring, other than a rise in attendances. No bad thing, but not really the piece of the jigsaw we need.

UTB

Logically, I would say no to Beattie, realistically, I would bum him to get him back, bum him.

All at Stoke in the Premier League. So we've ascertained if we were at that level it'd be a no-no. But we're not, therefore it could be a good move providing the wages were right. Similar things were said about Cresswell going into this season and he's nowhere near Beattie in terms of quality.

mate says he has let him out on shoreham st today.

no thanks

What would we want with this overweight, over the hill never been that cannot even cut it playing against the likes of Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock? We cannot afford him and I would despair if we somehow broke the bank and signed him. Sure he has a decent goal to game ratio, but he is a big time charlie, selfish out for mt James Beattie. We've got a striker that leads the line well in Cresswell (anyone used to go on United-ite will remember SUFC-Handsworth's posts on BT not leading the line properly) and if we make an addition we need a (young), pacey, athlete. We do not need a surplus, fat 33 year old that has only shown glimses of the the promise that he showed at Southmapton.

A fit and happy James Beattie, playing in League One, in the current SUFC side, would tear the division a new arsehole. 20 goals at a canter.

The only question that needs answering is whether the fist part of the above sentance would be true.

I would be amazed if we sign Beattie, given the likely cost of his wages. Fitness may also be an issue, as Presty says.

Tangentally, it never ceases to amaze me how much people dislike the only 20 goal a season striker we have had in a generation. Not leading the line properly?

In his only full season Beattie scored 22 goals, partnering Danny "ever present" Webber, Billy Sharp (rubbish in a United shirt), Luton Shelton and Rob "20 games, no goals" Hulse. Clearly, he let a team of f****** world beaters down by not leading the line properly.

And I do remember the posts you refer to. They were about as objective of your opinions on the long ball game.

bumming, fists, arseholes all in this thread, sounds like the synopsis of one of darrens 18 cert dvds :D

Why not have both Ollie? Squad is pretty thin as it is.
If BT comes in within a set wage structure (for footballing reasons on his part) then why not?
Would still like to see the two Rangers lads come on board as well.

NML only here until January dont forget

I tend to agree that this is all probably fantasy, but on the other hand Beattie, no doubt, now has more money than he knows what to do with and will probably never need to work again. If he really did love it at BL and (who knows if he did), then it might not be entirely impossible that he would give United a season for what would be, for him, twopence halfpenny every four years.

And, for me, Beattie was clearly the best centre foward we have had since Deane.

He made just 16 appearances last season, without scoring a goal. He might score for fun in League 1, but he might not. Goalscoring doesn't seem to be a problem for us this season, and they are coming from all over the team. I think there are higher priorities than taking what I think would be a big gamble.

Creating goals doesn't seem to be a issue for us.
Defending doesn't seem to be an issue for us.

Should we just leave the squad as it is? We have two proper strikers fit (the other fit one is young and untested, and the fourth has a myriad of issues). While I can understand the need to reinforce the defence and wings, we also need to do so up front.

I agree that the squad is wafer thin, and I agree that we need reinforcements up front - although Fleck, if he arrives, might partially address this. I just worry about the effect that Beattie might have on what is looking like a hungry, developing squad with a lot of team spirit, that doesn't have any "stars". I'm not convinced that he would necessarily be good for the dressing room.

He always seemed to work hard to me and get on well with the rest of the squad.

Additionally, considering there are at least 4 or 5 players on lower Prem wages still at the Lane, I can't see how Beattie coming in would be too offensive to those already here.

I'd actually prefer Ched to have his head in the right place (or his case to be suddenly dropped assuming he's done nowt wrong), but there's little chance of that happening sadly.
