Sheffield United Football club has been made aware of legal proceedings involving one of its employees. The club will be making no statements on this matter during the course of these proceedings, which have been reported in the national media.

The legal representatives of the player Ched Evans would like to make the following statement through the club's web site: "We wish to confirm that Ched Evans has this week been charged with an offence of rape by the North Wales Police. Ched has decided voluntarily to make this information public as he wishes to express his extreme shock and disappointment at having been charged with this offence, particularly given the evidence upon which the charge has been brought.

"Ched wishes to place on record that he strenuously denies the charge and will defend it vigorously in order to clear his name. Whilst he unfortunately cannot comment further on the evidence forming the basis of the charge, he is confident that when it is contested before a Court by his legal team, he will be acquitted and entirely vindicated.

"No further comment will be made whilst the legal process is ongoing."

This is going to seriously muck things up. This will drag on past the transfer deadline and we will not be able to shift him.

However, putting things into perspective IF there is any truth in this I hope the lass is ok. By the same token if Ched has done nothing wrong the next for months are going to be a nightmare for the poor lad.

Really hate it when my iPhone messes up with links to the official site! It jumps to the mobile version and for whatever reason I can't see a link to the statement there.

What's the statement say?

I guess it just depends on a) he's found not guilty, and b) how quickly he finds out. If he's cleared after August, we'll presumably loan him out to whoever covers the wages.

Without sounding too harsh I think it stinks how this girl was probably all over Ched, got what she wanted and then when she felt low the next morning because he did not want to know she cried Rape. I find it hard to believe that any footballer would rape any girl just with the sheer amount of attention they get for who they are anyway.

You can only speculatve either way. What we now know is that we're stuck with the overpaid sack of shit until this is cleared up....:(

If he is found guilty, can the club sack him for gross misconduct?

I'd think and hope so - but his contract will probably be up by then. What a total disaster he's been for us.

UTB

I know you're innocent until proven guilty, but similarly there's no smoke without fire! So I don't see how we can play him until the case concludes. Public image is even more important for the club now our income is reduced and who will want to attach themselves to the image of Ched until this is settled?

I only hope he will do the decent thing and negotiate a much smaller salary in the interim.

evans above-sack the twat and cut our losses.bad news-nobody wanted him and that means he`ll be harder to shift now.
collymore-hughes-king,
add evans to that now but at least the above mentioned brought goals before there turn toward the devils crimes.

Dave Jones might not agree with you on that one.

So if he cannot fulfill his contract with us what does that do to any contract with Man City?
Could the club sue him for breach of contract? there are many questions. All of which become irellevant if as we all hope he has not done it.

Not fair to judge his footballing abilities against this or his potential guilt/innocence against our opinions of his abilities at the moment really.

John Ebbrell will take a lot to have that crown removed.

Possibly so, but he only managed 45 minutes in a Blades shirt. We never got a chance to see what he would have brought to the Lane. Evans has been consistently shit, week in, week out, for 2 years.

he was bloody good in that 45 minutes as well!

as far as united are concerned i fined it hard to think that they could play a player, even consider employing a player under his conviction, under the clarity of a family club.
i wouldnt want my daughter going to watch utd with a potential lop playing in our coulours.
The main thing is though, that its still not proven before court.until then, i dont want to think he`s involved with our club.

If the CPS feel there's a case and charges to be answered then that, to me, shifts the odds away from things turning out in Ched's favour. Thus, I expect the club to think along these lines and feel forced to exclude him from the squad during the case. Whether they hold the right to dictate salary during such a suspension might be a blessing in the interim.

What has past history dictated with Dave Jones, Lee Hughes, etc?

I think Dave Jones was placed on gardening leave and replaced by Glenn Hoddle, and Lee Hughes was sacked by WBA after his conviction but I can't remember what happened prior to that. I remember him playing at the Lane in February 04 so I think they carried on playing him, as the incident happened I think in August 03.

This is a bit of an outdated view of rape and why so many women don't bother reporting it. Of those that do this is exactly the sort of thing they're accused of which is shocking if they're the innocent party. Rape's not about sex it's about power. Powerful people don't think about the consequences because as far as they're concerned the rules don't apply to them. A sad situation for all. Whatever happens Ched will forever be tainted by the accusation, as will his accuser. No winners, just losers.

has he been convicted of anything yet?

The CPS merely look at the prosecution's evidence against, not that of the defence. If the police have supplied what looks to be enough evidence to convict then they'll charge. In this case that's the woman's view of events. What Ched has to say is a matter for the court to consider and ultimately if he admits to being there then it'll come down to his version of events over hers. http://www.cps.gov.uk/news/fact_sheets/decision_to_charge/

He hasn't been convicted so he should be treated like any other player who hasn't been convicted of a crime. You can't victimise somebody who has only been accused of a crime.
