Ched Evans legal statement

A well thought out post, but I think the only real issue here is the judgment as to whether or not playing CE will do SUFC more good than harm on the pitch. If Wilson thinks CE's head is in the right place and that he can do the proverbial job, then he should play him. If not, not. I really don't give a monkeys for what Wednesday fans or anyone else might say about us playing a "rapist". At the moment, he is no such thing. And I really don't think SUFC's image can be harmed by playing someone who is subject to an unproven allegation.

I agree, any right minded person will do. But the world isn't full of right minded people, Darren. Whether Ched is guilty or not, he's going to plagued by this incident now for the rest of his career, the rest of his life. You don't shake off accusations like this, IMO. Even if you're innocent. As a result of Ched being at SUFC, our name is tarnished already ... unfair, but true. By playing him, there are lots of other people - not just Wednesday fans - that will use it as a stick to beat Sheffield United with.

I'd be concerned about the media circus that will surround United if Evans does play for us - particularly in the first home game of the season.

The key is in bold; it's how Ched Evans is coping with this. And unfortunately, although you have the ability to view things objectively there will be a large number of opposition fans who won't. If Evans can cope with the abuse which will come his way then he should play. If he can't, he shouldn't.

Evans hasn't played at all in pre-season. I read somewhere that Frank Barlow had said "Even if we can't sell him, we've still got to get him fit first".
There's no way he'd be ready to play in the first home game, even if all charges had been dropped and even if Wilson rated him above Porter, Bogdanovic, Creswell, Slew and Philliskirk.

Just think of Marlon King, he's worse as its proven he actually did it - Innocent til proven guilty, and if he strongly denies the charges, there you go.

Media Circus? Don't think we register anymore Wombwell. Even Fat Bastard hasn't mentioned it has he?

I remember Titus Bramble and Carlton Cole go through almost identical circumstances, they had several months of being convicted by forum

It made national news yesterday. Ched is quite well known as an ex Premier League player.

And as for Fatty Samuels ... he will!

He should be suspended pending the outcome.
I cannot see how any party benefits from him playing at all.
He will get dogs abuse from oppo and home fans alike.
Waste of money, waste of a shirt, waste of space.
Not as though we are going to miss his goals - it just stops us replacing the lazy useless fecker.

"if his mind is in the right place" - wasn't clear he had one from the evidence I have seen when he gets a start.

Why should he be suspended pending the outcome? On what grounds?

If you were wrongly accused of raping someone, Kenilworth, would you want your employer to suspend you for it? That isn't fair mate.

However bad a signing Ched has been for this club, it is irrelevant. He is innocent until proven guilty and he has a contract with United. Therefore, United can do nothing unless he is jailed for it. If Ched is innocent - I, for one, hope he is - then he does not deserve the treatment he is going to get from many. However bad a signing he has been for United.

Depending on the charge, I could see a lot of employers taking the decision to suspend. However, I would also reckon most would be forced to do this on full pay.

I'd say so too, if they suspended without pay - I believe he could terminate his own contract after 2 weeks.

Funny how a lot of people want him sacked for this when he has not been found guilty.

Question
If it was Jags or Brown that had been accused when they were here would everyone want them sacked?? I think not

Exactly right ,from a personal position shouldn't we support him fully until hes proven guilty ,and from a business position shouldn't we support him until we can get some money from his sale. Titus Bramble is the example, similar situation and millions received after charges were dropped.

And whilst we're paying his wages, he should be available for selection by his Manager.

I think thats right. We could suspend him, but we would have to pay him - so we would get even less benefit from him than usual. Hence if DW things CE is in a fit mental state he should be consdiered for selection.

I don't know, Darren. Addition by subtraction and all that...

Seriously, it is a very tough decision for Wilson to make. Quite frankly, if Porter gets fit and stays fit (ha!), I'd rather have him and Slew than Evans, and there's also, er, "competition for places" from the dread Cresswell or Boggy. Evans could find himself in for a long spell on the bench.

We could suspend him and would have to pay him. However if he was to be found guilty, then surely there would be a gross misconduct clause in his contract, which could be invoked. Obviously I hope to god he is innocent.

I know someone who got charged after a woman cried rape.

He was held in prison for a few weeks then bailed to live with a relative awaiting trial.

It got to trial and it was chucked out on first day after the court decided that the case was a joke.

Absolutely ridiculous and the poor lad suffered for it.

So despite the charges, and the fact he's been completely absent from all games in pre-season, Gary Speed has rather bizarrely called him up for the upcoming Wales friendly.

Hope for his sake he's done nothing too
On the football side he'd now be at Leicester, Ipswich or Rangers and we'd be 3 players or so up if it'd not happened
Strange how something like this could shape our season

Him and his friend both charged today (Radio 5).

Him and his friend both charged today (Radio 5).

I don't know any details but it doesn't look good on paper. If it was just Ched and the girl involved you could give him the benefit of the doubt.

However, two men and one girl - not good.

(Very different from two girls and one man!)

As someone with, ahem, relevant experience, I bloody hope that 2 men and 1 girl situation is not seen as evidence of rape!
