Barry Hartle

I have got some information regarding Barry Hartle from my mate in Stockport. Apparently Barry is still in the care home & it's his grandson !! who is appealing for "memories" of Barry's playing career on Where are they now? | footballers | Barry Hartle (where are they now .co.uk). Barry is suffering from dementia & does not communicate much about his playing career.
So come you old gits brush off the cobwebs & log in to give his grandson some background to his grandad's footballing past!
Your post got me diving into the old scrapbooks, which unfortunately ended in January 1962, before Barry Hartle had his longest spell of first-team games. He played quite a few times in the first half of the 61-62 season, and gets some nice mentions in the reports, but he never appeared in action photos! Even in games where he scored. I attach pics of 4 reports from 61-62 in which his contribution is mentioned (one is a prestigious friendly v Eintracht Frankfurt); he was clearly thought well of by the journalists. Let me know if you can’t read them. And I will add an anecdote in the next post.

My strongest memory of Barry Hartle is from a match at Villa in September 1962, and he scored both goals in a 2-1 win. I was sitting in the Stand roughly level to the edge of the penalty area at the end Utd were attacking in the first half (in the Stand only because a school pal lived near Joe Shaw, who gave us 2 tickets when the team coach arrived). A Utd attack broke down, and the Villa keeper Sims (a very reliable keeper) jogged towards the edge of the area bouncing the ball every 5 steps, as the rules required then. Derek Pace, who Utd had signed from Villa, decided to try something unique (as a joke with an old friend, perhaps?), and ran alongside him, and as he was about to bounce the ball, planted his foot on the ground. The ball hit his foot and rolled about 15 yards out to Barry, who immediately chipped the ball into the empty net from all of 30+ yards. Absolutely brilliant!
I don’t remember his other goal. I do, however, remember Joe Shaw scoring what Alan Hodgkinson described as the finest goal he ever saw - a bullet header into his own goal!

didnt he take over from ronnie simpson on our left wing ? seem to remember him being very fast and tricky but a bit frail and lightweight as well but very good player

Yes, and we also had Hodgson who could play there. I always thought of him as skilful, but in need of imposing himself more on games. It seemed typical that even in games where he played well according to the match reports, he doesn’t appear in a single action picture!

Player on left please, ? - Barry - John Nibloe.
By the way EOL, less of the old gits when you want summot. Bloody sipper wapper.
Will look see if I can find a photo, don't hold your breath, I will be back.
Andy Wilson, right-winger, played 4 times for us, and then had a decent career with a number of local clubs.

Worth adding that his games were in 60-61, when we were looking for a replacement for Kevin Lewis, who had been sold to Liverpool. In the spring we signed John Docherty and Len Allchurch, and Allchurch’s immediate impact meant that the door was closed for Andy Wilson.
john docherty was a good jinky right winger but became another victim of the lane boo boys

All I've got is he joined us from Watford in June 1960,for £2,750 and left 26 July 1966.
His first league game for us was 29 Oct 1960 at Middlesbrough we lost 3-1.
Last game 30Apr 1966 West Brom 0 United 0
Appearances in all comps, - 117, goals,. 21

At first he was mainly cover on the left for Ronnie Simpson or Billy Hodgson
He became a regular though in the 64/65 season......

Yes I was there Hodgie ,remember the incident with Doc Pace getting the ball off a nieve Nigel Sims.
I think all eyes were fixed on the ref as even in them days it was rare to get away with what Doc did..It counted ! and as you say we went on to win.

could be john docherty or maybe tony wagstaff ?
Maybe you've been a politician in an earlier incarnation? :)
It is a hard one, thought maybe there may have been info in a match report you had.
Thanks all the same.

Agree, of the the two you mentioned I believe Docherty the more likely.
I'm a believer, the more you watch a player the easier it is to pick them out in photos where there is little evidence of there identity.
Thanks again.

No, I was only two at the time.
poor excuse silent lol mind i wasnt there either and was 12 at the time can remember david coleman on grandstand saying we were 1 up at half time then watching vidiprinter at 4.45 and it typing sheff wed 0 so knew we had won just a bonus when it typed sheff utd 2 😀😀😀

Thanks for that confirmation. I doubt whether it was technically illegal, as I suspect the rules did not mention anything as specific as that. But it certainly made everyone wonder ‘Is that allowed?’

Sorry XM657. As for being a sipper wapper I can remember Ronnie Simpson - shot like a cannon - only problem was his centres were just as hard. Only Doc Pace was brave / daft enough to stick his head in the way.
