Sorry, thought we where on a football forum. Is there a forum or a sport for Getting up and down the pitch. How refreshing last night to see a player: ball at feet putting players on their arses with skill. Surely things like that must take priority over "Ready:Set'Go. Understand you need pace but don't put that at top of a list.
We will see how your list of players perform in the up and coming Euros when hopefully they show their speed against Europe's elite players.
I played football for 34 years at all levels accept pro. Players with blistering pace you could work out a system to stop them, players with skill you just stand back and admire then shake their hands after.
Again let's hope this young lads has both in abundance and shows us his skills. And maybe he will be joining your list of wing backs.
Your argument is completely irrelevant to RWB. They need to be able to get up and down the pitch as a bare minimum, look at the grass Baldock & Stevens cover per game. I'm not talking about speedboats with no drivers, of course, you require skill but I'd hardly have prime David Silva or Lionel Messi playing RWB as he would struggle with the athletic side hence they play the position they do.

In terms of "We will see how your list of players perform in the up and coming Euros when hopefully they show their speed against Europe's elite players" well most of them already have and that's why they're playing in the European finals next week.

The best right/ left back's of my time are Cafu / Roberto Carlos both of them were incredibly powerful athletes as well as having skill etc but I doubt they'd be rocking up for Sheffield United in their prime.

We're talking about Championship football here one of the most demanding leagues in Europe if you think that just skill at RWB is going to get you by you're completely wrong regardless of what level you have played at (which is also completely irrelevant to this discussion).

Not the way I see the game. What I see in the PL is skill combined with athleticism and strength.

I'm not saying today's game is better than decades ago but there is no less skill, just much fitter and stronger players.
I have enjoyed watching football for over 60 years, and always enjoyed it. Today’s game is much better than decades ago, despite its many annoying developments (play-acting, too much money, messing around with kick-off times, etc.)

ALL levels accept pro? Amateur then. Maybe you probably didnt make the grade due to just standing back and admiring the oppositions skill? See when i played Sunday league a skillfull player got dealt with early on, he got Santos'd at neck height......then id shake his hand. To be fair, probably why i didnt make it. That and i wasnt very fast...

Dont get me wrong im happy that Heckingbottom is giving this lad a chance and also Jebbison but he's bringing through youngsters into positions where were overstocked. The midfield has been the problem position since day one. We need to bring more through in midfield. Play brunt instead of norwood ffs

Bogle seems a bit out of form, Baldock seemingly injured I think I’d give him a go on Sunday.

I’ve only ever seen highlights of his performances but he looks powerful & athletic exactly the attributes you need in that position.
Sod it give the whole U23 team a go on Sunday.
Great assist and all that, but Christ the standard in that clip is a MILE off PL or Championship level. Let’s not all get too giddy just yet.
Yeah but its probably on a par if not better than the current first team performance though !

Based on last night what would you rather see on Sunday - SUFC v Burnley first fourth XI or SUFC v Burnley U23's.

I know which one I'd rather see.

Result doesnt matter give them all a PL debut for having such a wonderful season!!

I can't remember who it was but I do recall a top coach saying that "you can teach athletes to be footballers but you can't teach footballers to be athletes" ie. natural athletic ability is a pre requisite for any wannabe footballer.

"Try playing RWB "sounds pretty relevant to this discussion to me.
Englands route to the Euros was hardly reached by beating elite teams of Europe.
You've also got us playing with wing backs next season.
My point initially was you noted the young lad was strong and athletic and pretty certain he would like to have been described as a talented skilled footballer first and foremost. I could well be wrong. Lets hope he turns out to have both.

The U23’s play in a final the day after the Burnley game so I’m not sure we’ll see any of the young lads from the start, including Jebbison. Our game is meaningless, give a couple debuts in the second half and let them play in the final, it’s youth football but it’s something to play for rather than a dead rubber.

Not brunt’s strength imo. Norwood is the conductor for us (when things are going well) he sits at the base of midfield and dictates play. He’s the pivot through which we switch wings and start attacks. Brunt isn’t that type of deep player he’s very neat and has good passing range but seems to operate wider linking with the advanced fullback or passing vertically into the strikers. He’s a RCM or 10 in this system not a defensive player.

Oli Burke is living proof that the above statement is complete bullshit :)

In the semi final Osula came in for Jebbo and got a hat-trick in 9 minutes. I doubt Hecky will hold the lads back.

It was Dario Gradi who said "Give me an athlete and I will make you a footballer but give me a footballer I can't make him an athlete"

Of course if we play more kids, they stop being under 23s and can class themselves as PL players - boosting their confidence and value.

We paid £24m for a 20 yr old who has never played PL before, maybe someone will pay that for Jebbo?
Burnley can do the same play youngsters, business wise as it might make sense for the new owners.

shake hands? You obviously didnt play in the Bible class league early eighties,,the skilful players hands were usually clamped around whichever limb had been broken,, I think we lost 4 players to broken bones in 6 months

This league is very difficult now. Players who can execute great skill at a breakneck speed and run all day. It's a totally different level to the early 1990s

... and I assume you must have got sent-off a lot?

More shades of 75/76 with a few youngsters getting blooded before the end of a abject relegation season. Back then Edwards, Stainrod, Kenworthy and McGeady, to be followed in the next two or three years by Hamson, Varadi and Benjamin. Let's hope this crop of youngsters aren't wasted in the same way.
