The most successful clubs are in the richest areas, newcastle get 55000 at home but look where they are, you could blame the owner but I bet it’s down to money coming in to the club, Sheffield isn’t an affluent area and doesn’t have surrounding affluent areas unlike the London clubs even Leeds as a city roughly the same size is more affluent.

They have large fanbases that extend far beyond what they can get into St James Park, and that's the reason for the Saudi takeover interest.
When you add the fact that they've had to compete with Sunderland who in their own right also have a fanbase which extends further than what they can get in the Stadium of Light, its only a matter of time before they get the backing they need as well.
We have 27,000 fans left, if all 27,000 died today, heaven forbid, were practically finished.
Hence my original comment, we need a new fanbase.
