Whoever it is will be gone before 12 months are up so it matters little. We'll be mid-table next year and that will mean the fans go mental so they'll be sacked.
Hence my comments in the shoutbox. There seems to be a cycle that every new owner goes through where they mistake the ability of a manager for their own ability. KM was the same with Warnock. I believe that he genuinely believed he was mainly responsible for our success and Warnock was just a hired hand who could be easily replaced. Then, when it goes tits up, it’s everybody else’s fault.
Each new owner seems to come in thinking every other football owner is a bit crap and that, because they’ve done well selling hats or phones or however they’ve made their money, they’ll be able to do things much better. Which usually means trying to “do things differently”. It’s just trying to reinvent the wheel. There isn’t a magic formula that no one has yet discovered.
It’s a people business. Get the right people in the right positions and it should work. Sometimes you’ll fall short, not because you’ve done anything wrong, just because football isn’t an exact science, a poor decision by a ref could cost you 2 points, which could be the difference between automatic promotion and the lottery of the playoffs. You can be scuppered by injuries, or players getting banged up, or just by the fact two other clubs have been a little bit more fortunate, or a combination of things.
The skill of being an owner is recognising when you’ve got good people being unlucky and when you’ve made a mistake in recruiting someone.
It’s quite possible that with van Winckle advising him, PA may not fall into some of the traps inexperienced owners fall into. That’s what I’m hoping for. It’s also possible that he’ll just follow the same learning curve others do and by the time he’s realised what he should have done, it’s too late. Who he appoints may give us a clue which way it’s going to be.
Which is why I’ve said if it’s Hecky, I’ll start to lose interest. I can’t keep watching the same film over and over again. I used to go to England games and then when we failed to qualify for the Euros in 2007, after seeing the Blades get relegated earlier on, I decided I’d had enough. I couldn’t deal with supporting two teams that constantly let you down. I’ve never been to an England game since, although I still want them to do well. It’ll be the same with United, I’ll still have a passing interest and want them to succeed but I’ll probably not watch them much or bother going to the Lane when I come up to Sheffield, unless it’s a three line whip and “come on FFS, everyone’s going” from my mates.
