Why with the apparent obsession with a Director of Football?

Of course things change, but for decades English football depended on a manager who acted as strategic hub, psychologist, dispenser of punishment, and not a single DoF could be seen poncing about any of the British clubs who competed in Europe. I'd love someone to explain why an appointment like this would have a positive impact on the first team or any up and coming players on our books.

Our current owner has little appreciation of what it takes to run a professional club, and although I'm still waiting for confirmation of Wilder's departure, I have a dreadful feeling that even though we're currently under a cloud, Wilder's hand's on approach won't be repeated whoever takes his place. I hope I'm wrong, but this time next season will be the moment to comment on whether this has been a disastrous departure or a joyful success. I can't say it feels like a well considered decision, oh well, we shall see.......UTMB!

I've read on here the question "what decent manager would put up with a DoF ?" 15 pl teams had them last season and as has been written above, more than 1/2 the Chamionship top 10.

In the end, the more important appointment is a head coach, and that is really difficult to get right.

I understand the logic behind this approach, these clubs are looking to reduce their risk by spreading responsibility around. If all your success is invested in 1 guy who controls everything, you're fucked when he's gone. The other end of the scale is Watford where it seems they can change head coach every 3 or 4 months with barely any effect on team performance
