Does anyone know what the record amount of penaltys conceded by a team in a single season is?
Because we must be getting close to beating it! :(

Without getting into the moaning about penalties. 4 penalties in the last 3 matches at least 3 of which shouldn't have been given!!!!!

God knows how many points that might have cost us.

Rant over.

3 points directly. One point if we had gained the draw at Norwich and two extra points for the win over Donny.

After watching the league show lastnight it seems its not just us receiving bad referee decisions

I thought Donny's penalty was borderline too.

He should have been booked for diving. Referee was totally conned on that one.
How many of these refereees have actually played the game I wonder? It seems they are being easily fooled.

I dont see why penalty divers should not be assessed after the match and banned if guilty . Morgan and Reid both suffered trial by video .

Said this before, they should, it should also be a three match ban, its dicussing that the governing bodies of this game are allow diving to go unpunished. Mind you the rules our own Governing body uses, like the Minimal Contact and Intent rules promote diving, look at the N'Zogbia pen against Arsenal other day. The commentators were actually praising N'Zogbia for throwing himself to the ground.

Really the refs should have a good long think about penalties which are game changing events.
Notwithstanding our shite defending we have lost a number of games recently due to soft penalties.
Kozzy's "infraction" was way outside the box, as was Nozzies trip against Hull.
Really Mr. Blather it is time for video technology.

The FA don't want to undermine a decision the referee has given.

They don't seem to understand the difference between 'undermining' and 'helping'. It works fine in rugby (as does sin-binning which is also something I would look at) and when you look at the time wasted when the ref is surrounded by players, there's plenty of time for a video ref to look at it.

It's another debate as to what exactly video technology should be used for and you have to give the ref the call most of the time but to me, there's no excuse not to look at goal-line or penalty decisions where the position of the infringement/ball is concerned.

Was it last week that Howard Webb told the Blackpool players they should "go to ground to win more free kicks"?

Edit: "Got to ground" - god, I hate that phrase. Why don't we just call it what it is and say "throw themselves to the floor though they could easily stay on their feet"?

Agreed. I personally think the 3 game ban for anyone who is proven to have dived in a game is a good idea. It will make some of the play actors think twice before tumbling, if they think they may not be available for the next few games.

But it's hard to police I suppose, for instance, Holt going down with minimal contact from Monty.... Would this be a 3 game ban? There was contact, but I feel he should have stayed on his feet and could easily have done so.

He said it would be easier for referees to give free kicks if they went to ground.

Some of the teams that go up are naive in staying on their feet, when a tumble would be much more to their advantage.
It's a very English thing to do, to try and play on even though there is contact..... some players are an exception to the rule though, ala Gerrard.

The trouble is, you then end up on the other end of the stick... stronger players like Rooney who (earlier in his career at least) were unafraid to use their strength to stay on their feet and tussle in a 50/50 situation end up giving away a free kick as the other player sees an opportunity for deception.

you're missing the point.. you shouldn't have to actually fall down to win a penalty.. thing is that the referees haven't got the bottle to award it if the player doesn't actually go down/roll around/ call on stretcher.. 'see i told you it was a pen!!.. he fell down so it must be'

The problem with that is that ex-players condone divers every week on MOTD. The FA should employ fans to review video evidence. I'd happily do the wendy games.

Very difficult to accuse Billy of diving on Monday and make it stick.

He stopped, let Kozzy run in to him and then went down. Unfortunatly this is a skill these days no different to being able to trap the ball.

I'm sure we'll be helping the kids in the acdamey to develop these skills.

It was a definate pen.

It wasn't Billy (seen it since), it was Coppinger. He went down like a sack of shit too and he still conned the ref to the outcome, it was a dive. Kozzy made hardly any contact for him to go down the way he did, no leg was put in front of him, no leg clipped his ankles and no arms pulled him.

Coppinger had a look around just before the ball got there, he knew contact was coming and made the most of it. Shame we don`t get those sort going for us.

But isn't this the point?

We could do a lot just by not putting ourselves in the position for the opposition to take advantage.

Call it diving, conning the ref or whatever, but if like Nosworthy v Hull and Kozzy v Donny we go flying in (in or around the edge of the box) you leave yourself open to punishment, whether it be giving away a pen or allowing the attacking player to skin you.

I'd love to have a good look at all the pens we've given away this season, because increasingly it seems to be defenders getting out of position or losing our shape in the back four when we get punished.

That is so true Swiss. Kozzy was running over to cover and fouled Coppinger outside the area, Nozzy was skinned and chased his man tripping him outside the area (Hull), Monty was trying to cover a winger and had to cut back inside and fatally behind Holt (Norwich). Yeates was aimlessly running back out of position when the ball was headed down onto his shoulder. The lack of defensive organisation and above all communication is at fault. I might add that Nozzy really is crap as a centre back.
