Open Goal!, more like Sir 'Billy' Rootes was a proper 'Backandfront'. One of several occasions Britain was too smart for itself post 1945.Sir WilliamRootes was sent over to Germany after WW2. Just after the British Engineering Division had started rebuilding the bombed factory in Wolfsburg to evaluate the VW Factory and Beetle to see if it was of any value , bearing in mind they could have had it for free , returned saying “no value what so ever” . What a open goal they missed.
Great story. You beat me by one generation- my great-grandfather lived next to the Lane, but I have no idea whether he had any interest in football. I should have asked my grandfather, but never did.yes, I have seen all 929 pages and those photos are already maybe. however, the photos are great. and brings great memories. when I started to go to beautiful downtown Bramall Lane.walking up what seemed 1,000 steps to the kop.i was 8-1966. my qualifications to be born a Blade. my dad started going to Bramall lane just before the second world war. my grandad started going just before the first world war. my great grandad started to go in 1889.born and bread a Blade.all the family are Blades.except a couple of black sheep.

Can vaguely remember both games but not much about the build ups. Cardiff game was a barmy warm evening and the Watford game was a bright warm sunny day. Rember after the Watford promotion winning game walking back to the station and 100s of fans dancing and singing in the Old fountain that use to be outside the station .Silent Blade you're the boss and deserve my respect with your knowledge of the Blades. may I ask do you have match report of the Blades v Cardiff City match Apri27th April 1971..build up to the match and same against Watford.it would be great if you can.i will buy you a couple of pints and a bag of crisp.
