Knew as soon as he was born in Coatbridge he'd be a Celtic fan for in these parts;
About 15 years ago I was in Teheran on a UK Trade Mission. The visit was really interesting for many reasons and I did some business as well, which was nice.
Driving standards were terrible, but fortunately the traffic was so bad, that acted as a natural speed restrictor. On one taxi journey with some fellow Brits, I mentioned that all the cars looked like Hillman Hunters. Somebody more knowledgeable than me said that was because Iran used to import them in kit form, so in effect they were Hillman Hunters.
Two photos along Arundel Gate. I've only written Autumn 1990 on my notes.
In the first one, the Novotel is under construction.
In the second one, taken from the Registry Office, you can just about make out a couple of floodlights pylons at the Lane.

Who did they play against because for some reason seem to think it was a foreign team or maybe Russian and Lev Yasmin played in goal. All I remember was watching a game where the opponents goalkeeper was the big draw and definitely foreign. Help required here.
Finally sorted out and nothing to do with Lev Yashin. 8th Feb 1972 United played Kiev Dynamo.I think you mean Lev Yashin. We used to have a song about Hodgy being better than Yashin.
The Goalkeeper not as famous. Finally sorted out and nothing to do with Lev Yashin. 8th Feb 1972 United played Kiev Dynamo.
Phew done that . Just need someone to say "that was done 200 pages back"Teams that night.
Noticed that 8 of the top 10 back then are in the top 10 now. How things change, the more they stay the same. The Goalkeeper not as famous.
Oleg Blokhin played that night but he isnt listed in the programmeTeams that night.
Lost 2-1What was the score?
Went to that game.
Yes, 1975-76 season
Rudakov played for the USSR in the 1972 European Championship final & was in the team of the tournamentThe Goalkeeper not as famous.
I'm getting really nostalgic now. This was the venue for Esteemed Forgeblade and my last draught beers together before lockdown - 7th March 2020, Indie Beer Feast, after the Norwich game. Seems like another world, nearly as far away as the picture! Positively, I became a grandad today, so there's some good stuff going on too!!!
I think that the Rootes Group, who owned Hillman, opened a factory in Teheran in the late 60's or early 70's, when we used to talk to Iran. The Shah of Iran was a twat, and his regime wasn't great, but compared to what Iranians have had to endure in the past 40 years, it wasn't so bad!About 15 years ago I was in Teheran on a UK Trade Mission. Looking through some old programmes, Gary Sinclair just about has some hair in one. View attachment 86547
Sir WilliamRootes was sent over to Germany after WW2. Just after the British Engineering Division had started rebuilding the bombed factory in Wolfsburg to evaluate the VW Factory and Beetle to see if it was of any value , bearing in mind they could have had it for free , returned saying “no value what so ever” . What a open goal they missed.I think that the Rootes Group, who owned Hillman, opened a factory in Teheran in the late 60's or early 70's, when we used to talk to Iran. Footnote for anyone born after 1975 - the Rootes Group was a big British car making company based in Coventry, which was taken over and shut down by Chrysler, an American company. Iran was a relatively western leaning country which ended up not being. This is very simplistic, but the USA is a factor in both events!
I didn't know this. Just about sums up British engineering management post war. Obviously our roads are full of Hillmans, Singers, Humbers and Sunbeams, whereas VWs, Audis, Skodas and Seats (all in the VW group) are very rare!!!!Sir WilliamRootes was sent over to Germany after WW2. Chris is a jammy git, I’d have loved to have an award presented by Inspector Jacques Clouseau.Looking through some old programmes, Gary Sinclair just about has some hair in one.View attachment 86538View attachment 86539View attachment 86540View attachment 86538View attachment 86539View attachment 86540View attachment 86541View attachment 86542View attachment 86543View attachment 86544View attachment 86545View attachment 86546View attachment 86547
