Champions League:

Even if Man City's CL ban stands, I assume it's safe to say that a Champions League spot is gonna be nearly impossible, even if we win all of our 3 games. Man United got an easy programme, and Chelsea (already 6 points above us) plays Norwich at home, so safe to say they are out of the picture as well. The only team we could possibly catch if we win our 3 games is Leicester City. Since we're playing them, we could lower the gap to 2 points (they have 1 more game to play tho). Hopefully, Bournemouth can take points from them today. And then we have to do our job.

Europa League:

Right now it's up till place 7 that's guaranteed a EL spot, which could change into an 8th if City ban stands & Arsenal does not win the FA cup. The last EL spot is for the 2nd qualifying round, while the rest are straight qualification into the Group Stage. A huge difference. Looking at all fixtures I would say that even if we only win 1 of our 3 remaining games, we still finish in the top 8. All teams around us have at least 1 tough match-up left, and only Arsenal looks quite good atm but they have to play Liverpool.


What we should hope for today:

Wolves - Everton: Everton wins. Quite obvious.

Aston Villa - Crystal Palace: Villa win. I would love to see Villa go down, but they are playing against Arsenal in the second last round. If they win today, it's likely that they still have a chance to stay up when they play Arsenal, so they will be very motivated.

Spurs - Arsenal: Draw. Even though Spurs plays awful, they have 3 fixtures that they could win after this game. If they drop points here, that would give us a 4 point lead with 3 games remaining. Arsenal will get into 3 points of us, but plays Liverpool the next game.

Bournemouth - Leicester: Bournemouth win. Obviously.

If wolves play like they have done over the last couple of games I expect them to fade with those fixtures, Burnley could mount a legitimate challenge in good form at the moment, not bad fixtures. One thing I've learned in life. It's impossible to predict football results. What will be will be.

I keep thinking it's impossible, we're playing great and a match for anybody we have to play but a draw is enough to lose places. Then you look at who the others have to play... and realise half the teams in this league can comfortably expect to get points off anybody.

A bit worried on how the set up for Europaleague will look. Season restarts september, usually qualifications are done through july/august. Fear the number of teams entering the Europa cup could be reduced in order to get it finished in time. Add some international games into the mix, looks challenging to get it all done. Basically more games in shorter time. European championship kicks off next summer .

I remember writing a similar post about us, Bolton, Scunthorpe and Fleetwood in Spring 2017. Our tough matches at home to Millwall and Coventry were causing me concern at the time.

Only 3 years later and yesterday I watched us smash Chelsea to set up a real chance of Europe. Fucking mental

I wonder whether privately Wilder thinks Leicester are the target and he hasn’t given up on us clinching the last CL spot. It might seem fanciful, but IF Leicester do drop pts vs a desperate (but improving) Bournemouth, then it’s very much game on when we play them on Thursday.

We’ve got to win our remaining games, obviously. But come Friday morning we might only be 3 points behind Leicester with them having Europe chasing Spurs and Man Utd to play.

Man Utd look strong to finish 4th but 5th could still be up for grabs. Many are fixated on us trying to qualify for the Europa, but whisper it quietly and there’s a bigger picture here.

This bodes well for us looking at those remaining fixtures.

That said, I'm pretty sure Aston Villa were a mid table team with nothing to play for in May 2007. And look how that ended.

Using my sophisticated model for league table calculations (read: I'm taking a half arsed guesses at the results) and I'd say 2 wins out of 3 would get us 60 points which should be enough for top 7 (burnley can only get a max of 59, Arsenal and Spurs can get a max of 62 and 61 respectively and they play each other. 2 wins and 2 draws for Wolves gets 60 points though so we'd maybe be giving up 6th place as they have a better goal difference).

Bare minimum is that a win and a draw just miiiiight be enough as we'd be on 58 points but we'd then be relying very heavily on results going for us for it to be enough. Arsenal can get 58 points with 2 wins and 2 draws but they have a better goal difference so would be above us, Spurs winning 3 out of their 4 will get 58 points but like Arsenal they also have a better goal difference than us. Burnley will need to win all their games which will get 59 points (realistically their only way of getting into Europe for me as their goal difference is much worse). Lastly if Wolves get 2 wins out of 4 they also reach 58 points but again their goal difference is better than us so we'd be relying on them to have a serious fuck up in This scenario really.

Way i see it is that it's gonna be tight towards the end and if we don't get in Europe the 2 points dropped against Villa is 100% gonna come into it.
