With all the Retained/Released lists released, is this the ideal time for Wilder to be picking and choosing from the dregs?
We haven't got the biggest budget, it's not going to be the easiest thing to attract the higher class players we need, and as Wilders always looking for his sort of player, there must be plenty of young lads, the odd, worth a punt on a free, prem players like Clyne, that could bolster our ranks for next season, there might even be a few gems????

Dont go for bang average but overpriced championship level players. You are almost as well scouring the lower leagues for the best young talent it has to offer at a fraction of the price.

If you need a big player to come straight in to the first XI, £20m won’t be enough to cut it and improve on what we have already got.

Double it (BIG problem) or just don’t bother !!

I haven't heard one name from the released lists yet where I thought he could do a job or that they'd join us, but I think the list is only just officially out. I can't see us going for Clyne as Baldock is one of the stronger players and Clyne would want to be first choice and on big wages. Lallana would be great but can see him going down south, probably back to Southampton. If they release Miler he'd be great.

Covering old ground here but bargains are available. Vardy £1 million, Mahrez £500,00
or thereabouts. I know everyone else is also looking for the same unpolished gem but it's doable.
 
I think Wilder has a bit more of a detailed process involved with bringing in players that involves lots of scouting and research over months.

I don't think Wilder would ever make a signing based on looking at who is releasing players and thinking 'they can do a job'.

If he does make a signing from one of those lists, i'm pretty sure he'll have been planning it for a while.
 
But there must be some good youngsters out there, they wouldn't still be at man u, Liverpool, Citeh etc, at 18/19yrs old if they were shit?
We made Brookes a player and I'm sure we could do it with 3 or 4 others that want to prove that they are good enough.

Or maybe we haven't looked at those players because we didn't think they would be available.
Besides, Wilders been doing it since he came...Rodwell, Robinson, Morrison, Bryan, to name but a few.
Anyway, I'm talking about the young lads too, that could come and have a trial, be around, get a full pre season in, and all without much risk, afterall, we have lots of players for trials.
 
As I mentioned in the rumour mill, Jeff Hendrick could be a shrewd move.

Not entirely sure he actually has an offer from AC Milan.

Not that I think we'd necessarily go for Clyne, but seeing us release Kieron Freeman interested me. While on the face of it, it's completely understandable. But I've no idea who slots in at RWB if Baldock gets injured unless I'm missing something. Doesn't appear to be anyone in the academy ready, and given our financial situation (ie. we have some money, but not loads), I highly doubt we'll splash out on someone to upgrade or properly fight for a place with George. So who do we get in as back-up?

Clyne is a great shout! Wages bound to be an issue but would definitely improve the squad!
 



There will no doubt be the possibility of picking up a player or 2 from the relegated teams.

But at what cost? If we could afford them, and who's good enough?
 
There are some surprising names on the released list:

Ryan Frazer - I assume he'll want bigger (in both club and money) and he's a dick but if you get him playing he's an extremely dangerous attacker
Aaron Lennon - Could he be worth a short contract as cover at RWB? I suspect his wages will be too high
Cuco Martina - His best position is probably right wing back. Could be cover but I assume wages too high
Cedric Soares - sames as above
Nampalys Mendy - We don't have a tackling defensive midfield like him. Wages should be doable.
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson - His career seems to have gone backwards but maybe that's something Wilder could address? Left side of defensive cover, maybe
Maya Yoshida - Great cover for Egan. Solid and dependable

There are also a few 36-38 year old keepers who may be worth a look as 3rd choice and allow Verrips to go out on loan for a year.
 
Clyne has played 10 games in the last 3 years. So he hardly fits the Wilder mould of a young, hungry player. For me he is the sort of player that Newcastle or West Ham would pay over the odds for.
 
There are a few players on that list who fit the whole Morrison/Rodwell nothing to lose signings model
 
Not a lot on those lists really.

Someone like Lallana is unrealistic, will likely go back to play under Rodgers or back to Southampton.
Fraser will want a big wage.

Mendy is an interesting one, who someone suggested.
If you keep him fit, he'd be a very very solid squad player.
£50,000 a week wage might be an issue though?

Ibe might be worth a punt, still only 24.
 
Yoshida would be a good replacement for Jagielka for defensive cover.

Some are wanting rid of Berge after 7 games.....

How are you going to convince them to give players the 2 years (Vardy) or 18 months (Mahrez) to be top players in this league?
 
This thing about 'can we afford him' that some posters have mentioned in this thread.

While we will have a reduced budget in the transfer window I think fees and wages will be cheaper this year (only to an extent though) because of the knock on effect of Covid.
Especially players that will be out of contract as they won't necessarily be in a strong negotiating position, apart from those who may have more than one club interested in signing them which will probably be snapped up sharp enough anyway.

But my points also remains a little for players who aren't free agents who will command a fee.

It's a fair question but possibly there wouldn't be as much pressure to perform due to a much smaller price tag? Mind you, on second thoughts, no fucking chance. Just as a caveat I'd can't deny I've been disappointed with Berge so far but not to the extent he's been criticised in some quarters.

He sempt to play, I'm not going to say better, but more comfortably in the centre v Man U when he came on, I'm really hoping a full pre season will sort him out though.
